Blog tip! Automate your blog searches with Technorati or manually with Google

by Trent

Google blogsearch and Blogger searches give the same results, so I usually use Google instead of Blogger, because they have my preferences saved. You can specify to sort the results with the "most recent" shown first (recommended.)

Technorati has a fine search, that I tend to think is slightly more useful then Google for blog searching.

Like automation? Technorati watchlist is a terrific way to quickly find new blogs that contain content that you are interested in, especially if ...

... especially if you have a complicated search-string. Not only does the watchlist feature track searches that you want to use again and again, but it can syndicate (with RSS) the search-results so that you can get updates (through your RSS Reader) when new blogs are posted anywhere on the internet that would show up in your blog watchlist.

The key is to get started leveraging syndicated content (RSS feeds) to deliver fresh content and subcribed updates to sites, blogs, and searches that interest you. I even use GMail's RSS feed (http://mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom) to tell me when I have new mail.

If you are sick of Microsoft's Internet Explorer, and want to try a nifty alternative browser, then going with FireFox, or (like me) with Opera, will make RSS even easier. For example, whenever I am on a site or blog that has an RSS feed then Opera puts a feed icon next to the address at the top of the screen. If I click that RSS-icon, then Opera will subscribe to that feed, and I will get fresh content from that site in Opera's built in email-like feed viewer. I can even preview the blog in the preview window without ever going to the site ever again. I am currently getting updates from over 60 blogs not to mention the GraceHead feed, and GMail feed, and Technorati search feeds. For every site to which I have subscribed to their feed, Opera will automatically discover if any new entries were added to that site, and add that to my list of fresh content.

At first, the content is bold, and once I have previewed it, the font is normal, indicating that I have already seen the content. Thanks to coComment, I even get syndicated feeds whenever I get a reply to any comments that I have left on anybody else's blog.

The nice thing about all of this is that it is easy once you subscribe, to stay constantly informed whenever a blogster updates with a new entry, or whenever somebody comments after you commented on a blog, or whenever you get a new email through Gmail, etc. Everything shows up in a Opera window with a preview screen, as it becomes available ... and I can tell at a glance which stuff I have read or not read, just by looking at whether or not the font is bold.

Does anybody have any other blog search sites that they have found useful?
