The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) is working to achieve a fundamental shift in how the Gulf of Maine is studied, understood, and managed in the 21st Century. We have built a world-class laboratory and assembled an outstanding team of scientists from around the globe (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States). This team is synthesizing their individual expertise in ecology, oceanography, systems modeling, resource economics, and fishing gear technology to shape a comprehensive view of what is happening in the Gulf of Maine. By providing a neutral, ecosystem perspective on why changes may be occurring and what to expect in the future, we will inform the evolution of economically and ecologically sound stewardship strategies.

Our scientists take an inclusive approach, working as equal partners with fishermen, to target critical information gaps that must be addressed in order to improve the regions fishery management system. Our research stretches from Cape Sable, Nova Scotia, to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and offshore more than 200 miles to the edge of the continental shelf (including the rich waters of Georges Bank) and has involved more than 100 fishing vessels. Current projects are focused on developing a better understanding of predator/prey interactions, habitat usage, fish migration, fish and marine mammal behavior, fishing gear technology, market dynamics, and the impacts of environmental changes.
