OJ Simpson Found Guilty; Thirteen Is The Unluckiest Number That He Ever Knew

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a verdict in the latest OJ Simpson trial (seriously, how many court things has be been involved in now?)…the jurors found him guilty of all charges:

The 61-year-old Hall of Fame football star was convicted of kidnapping, armed robbery and 10 other charges for gathering five men a year ago and storming a room at a hotel-casino to seize Simpson sports mementos — including game balls, plaques and photos — from two collectors. Prosecutors said two of the men with him were armed; one said Simpson had asked him to bring a gun.

After the verdict, Simpson, the sports-idol-turned-celebrity-pariah, was handcuffed and led from the room with his co-defendant, Clarence “C.J.” Stewart. They could spend the rest of their lives in prison.

“There is justice,” said attorney Gloria Allred, who has represented the family of his slain ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson. “Justice was delayed, but in this case it was not denied. Now that he may spend the rest of his life in prison, the law, and not O.J. Simpson, will have the last word.”

Well, Gloria (whom I’m no fan of, btw), I hate to point this out, because I am as glad to see OJ finally get to serve time as anyone else is…but justice in that case would have been served had he been convicted of those crimes at the trial of his ex-wife and her friend.  Of course, there is a tie-in to the previous trial, in that this case would never have come about had OJ not been trying to hide his sports memorabilia.

It’s too late to make amends for that travesty of a verdict now…justice delayed is justice denied. No, this is simply the latest (and hopefully final) chapter of a man who thought he could get away with anything, and it finally all caught up with him:

“I don’t know that one trial cancels out the other,” said Loyola University law professor Laurie Levenson, who attended Simpson’s murder trial. “People will always be troubled by O.J. For the people troubled by the Los Angeles acquittal, this case will make small amends. Saying finally there is justice, at least from a legal perspective, is very crude way of looking at justice.”

Having said that, I am glad that OJ is finally learning that he can’t do what he wants and get away with it just because of who he is. His luck ran out and it all finally caught up with him. He was finally busted for thinking he was above the law…the odds were stacked against him.

A bit of odd happenings in the courtroom…after the verdict was read, the lights went out:

And then, as only the sobs of Simpson’s sister broke the silence late Friday, the lights went out.

Court marshals flipped on flashlights and shouted for everyone to stay seated. Only the judge knew what had happened. It was 11 p.m. and the courthouse lights had shut down automatically.

“Timed out,” Judge Jackie Glass said in a fitting epitaph for the story of O.J. Simpson, which has long haunted America.

And just where will OJ be living now?

Kidnapping is punishable by five years to life in prison. Armed robbery carries a sentence of at least two years behind bars and could bring as much as 30.

Simpson and Stewart were taken to the Clark County jail, where the football star will live in a 7-by-14-foot cell, far removed from his ranch-style home in the lush Miami suburbs. It will be his home until at least Dec. 5, when he and Stewart are scheduled to be sentenced.

Oh, and that “thirteen” number thing?

He was convicted of an armed robbery that happened on Sept. 13 and was found guilty on the 13th anniversary of his Los Angeles murder acquittal. The Las Vegas jury deliberated for 13 hours after a 13-day trial.

While justice may not be served for the horrific murders of Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman, at least the jury got it right this time.

A Suggested Title For Larry Flynt’s Sarah Palin Porn Flick: “Drill Baby, Drill”

Yeah, so Radar Online is reporting a hilarious and disturbing story about an ad on Craig’s list looking for a Sarah Palin look-alike for a porn flick. As it turns out, the ad (according to the Radar article via the NYP) was place by none other than Hustler founder and publisher, the classy Larry Flynt.

Luckily for Radar, Flynt was kind enough to offer the script for their erotic pleasure journalistic endeavors and being the edgy folks they are, Radar has shared this information with the online community.

If You Like Pina Coladas…

This page contained an embedded video. Click here to view it.

I know.  This is like the worst song ever.  But I can’t help it, it’s been buzzing through my head all week, and I found this totally cheese on a cracker version of it, so I simply had to post it.  It’s what the little voices in my head wanted.

Of course, if any man I know ever acted this way, his old lady would have punched him in the face, thrown his belongings out in the street, and cut up his baseball cards, but hey…it’s got a good beat, you can dance to it.

Happy Friday, everybody….I am outta here!

Casey Anthony Offically Named Suspect; Ex Pleads With Her To Tell The Truth

While long having been a “person of interest” in the disappearance of her daughter, Caylee, Casey Anthony has now officially been named a suspect:

Orange County deputies are now calling the mother of missing 3-year-old Caylee Marie Anthony a suspect in the girl’s disappearance.

Casey Anthony, 22, was first called a ‘person of interest’ by investigators in mid-July , but only recently did they begin to refer to her as a suspect.

Sheriff’s spokesman Capt. Angelo Nieves said there was no new evidence to prompt the change.

“Her information has been suspect since we began this investigation,” Nieves said. “This is a person who has been uncooperative since the first day.”

A person of interest is someone law enforcement wants to speak to in order to provide information about a case, Nieves said. A suspect, on the other hand, is someone who is believed to have been involved in crime.

Anthony has been charged with child neglect and filing a false statement to law enforcement. She faces several check fraud charges in unrelated cases.

“Over the past two and half months we have been diligently working to resolve the case of the missing child,” Nieves said. “The information she has provided has proven to be false.”

And it has been learned that investigators are now searching in a couple of new areas:

Both wooded areas they’re searching are not far from where Casey Anthony lives with her parents. One is near the Amscot at Goldenrod and Highway 50 where Casey abandoned her car in late June. Investigators have searched the area more than once with cadaver dogs.

The other area is closer to Orlando International Airport, where a driver told investigators she saw a car like Casey’s white Pontiac Sunfire parked in the median days after Caylee disappeared and she saw someone slight of build wearing a baseball cap and what looked like athletic wear walk out of the woods, someone she believes could have been Casey. It was odd to her because it’s not a popular spot for joggers.

We’ve been following this case for a while now and have read many documents and seen many interviews with people connected with it.  I happened to catch this interview, and I thought it was one of the better ones I’ve seen.  On the Today show Thursday morning, ex-fiance Jesse Grund (who came across as very well-spoken) urged Casey to tell the truth and stop paying games:

“Casey, tell the truth. This isn’t about you anymore. This is about Caylee,†Jesse Grund said at the end of an interview with TODAY’s Matt Lauer Thursday in New York. “Stop dragging people’s lives through this. Stop destroying people’s lives and tell the truth. What happened to Caylee?†[...]

It is said again that Cindy Anthony believed, possibly still does, that Jesse is the one who knows where Caylee is:

“My number one suspect has been Jesse all along,” Cindy Anthony tells a detective, who replies: “We know that Jesse doesn’t have Caylee.” Grund confirmed that he has taken a polygraph test to clear his name, and told Lauer he’s been cooperating in the investigation into the disappearance of the little girl.

He says that while he felt it was impossible that he was Caylee’s father (later proven by a paternity test), he treated the little girl like she was his own:

When Casey Anthony became pregnant with Caylee, she initially told Grund that he was the father. Even though he didn’t think it was possible — they had broken up before she became pregnant — he involved himself with Caylee and treated her like a daughter.

“I petitioned for a paternity test, and there was zero percent probability†that he was the father, he told Lauer. He also explained why he took a paternal interest in Caylee when she was born: “My attitude was, until the paternity test comes out, I’m not going waste time or miss out if this really is my child.â€

He reveals that even though he caught her in lies and stealing from him, he never thought that she was a bad mom:

Since the disappearance, Casey Anthony has been portrayed as almost a pathological liar. Police interview tapes show detectives telling her that everything she told them about the disappearance had proved to be lies. Lauer asked Grund if he saw evidence of that.

“At the very end of our relationship, absolutely,†Grund replied. “At the very end, she started to lie about things. I was one of the ones she stole money from. She stole $250 from me, and then made up an excuse why she couldn’t pay me back, or made up excuses why she couldn’t be places with me. I found out she was actually seeing someone else at the end of our relationship.â€

It was a radical change from the young woman he had been briefly engaged to.

“She was a very good mother, Matt,†Grund said. “She was very doting. She was devoted. Caylee was the center of her universe.â€

Lauer asked if he saw any indication that Casey Anthony was having trouble coping with being a single mother.

“Absolutely not. No, not at the beginning,†Grund said, “Not when Caylee was a baby. There was no indication she was having any problems being a mother.â€

Casey Anthony has been portrayed as a woman more interested in partying than in being a mother, but Grund repeated that in the beginning, she wasn’t like that at all.

“She was very much into being a homebody and loyal, and she was wanting to spend the rest of our lives together,†he said. He traced the transformation in Casey Anthony to when she formed a closer relationship with her mother, from whom she had previously distanced herself.

“She started to pull away, and it started to become about her,†Grund said. “She started to party and drink — this lifestyle that now we’ve seen pictures of out there. And then the lying started to come … [When] she started becoming close with her mother, it started a transformation.â€

But could she have harmed her child?

“The Casey that I knew, no,†he said. “But … who knows the real Casey? I think only she does. I think her personality has been so changed and molded over the years, I don’t even know if she knows who she is.â€

His final words to Casey?

Addressing his ex-fiancé directly, Grund said: “We’re all done with having to listen to your lies and your stories that make no sense over and over and over again. So tell the truth about what happened.â€

Yes, absolutely.  We are all tired of the lies.  The stories go round and round and they don’t make any sense.  Casey, for once in your life, do the right thing.  This isn’t about you any longer.  You can only attempt to twist the police around for so much longer before they drop the hammer on you.  Everyone is tired of your games, Casey.  Caylee deserves more respect than that.  If there was ever any tiny bit of love for your daughter, please…tell the truth.

Just tell the truth.

Sarah Palin Reads All Periodicals, Declares Alaska Not A Foreign Country, Scares Rappers With Dumb Names

I am all sorts of school-girl-giddy waiting for tonight’s debate. I will even be skipping “Supernatural” (on the CW - hello DVR) to watch! I guess you could say I have a special fondness for “glittering generalities” and a woman who reads not just some periodicals, but “all of ‘em, and any of ‘em” which most likely include, “100 Recipes For Moose Jerky,” “Really Big Guns Quarterly,” “Dinosaurs and Other Mythical Creatures,” and definitely “Family Circle.” I kid, I kid.

Well, no I don’t, but I do mean it in good fun. Poor Sarah Palin, it’s not bad enough the woman is being run through the grist mill of the media, who are now overcompensating for the wildly inappropriate ass-kissing they gave her after the RNC, and are now making up for it by forcing her to talk to the condescending and self-important Katie Couric, but now she has to debate the loquacious Senator Joe Biden. On top of all that, she has Puff Daddy Diddy von P Diddler making fun of her, as if a man who can’t even stick with one dumb name and punches strangers in the face while trying to steal their girlfriend has any room to talk. He’s right about one thing, get out and vote on Nov. 4, it’s you civic duty regardless of who you vote for.

Can we get back to the issues already? Seriously people, we have real problems facing us besides Sarah Palin’s inability to name one periodical she’s read in the last 44 years of her life (besides all of ‘em.) Hey, as long as she’s reading Glosslip, she’s getting all the news that fit to read.

But only if she sticks to k’s stuff. I wonder if Ms. Palin was too embarrassed to list the sources she reads? If Katie Couric had asked me that question, first I’d probably challenge her to an arm-wrestling competition, but then I’d have to list them.

I wonder if the National Enquirer, Star Magazine and In Style count as publications that shape one’s world view?

Democrats Shouldn’t Get Too Cozy, McCain At His Best As Underdog

Grrrrrr……..

So I’m reading McCain: Myth Of A Maverick, by former war-blogger and Reason editor-in-chief Matt Welch and it’s led me to some interesting epiphanies. Welch, who would likely describe himself as a libertarian (Reason is the leading libertarian magazine), seems to be trying to convince the reader that McCain isn’t quite what he portrays himself to be, specifically, a maverick.

Last fall at the first BlogWorldExpo, I asked Matt if he were forced to vote today, would he vote for McCain and he thoughtfully paused and said “No, if I had to vote today, I’d vote for Ron Paul.” I am not sure if Mr. Welch still feels that way, but one of his reasons was McCain’s commitment to the Iraq War, and Welch’s desire to see the U.S. extract itself from that conflict. Matt made it clear McCain’s inherent war-mindedness, wasn’t exactly what the country needed.

A lot’s happened since last November. I’ll be honest, I haven’t finished the book yet, but so far, what I’ve read is superbly written, full of insight and well researched — and of course, McCain’s camp wanted nothing to do with it.

What makes Welch’s take on the man who might be our next president is his own political neutrality. That’s not to say Matt’s neutral, but his views could be construed as outside of the two-party system which dominates U.S. politics. Despite the book being written from a fairly neutral perspective, it’s obvious Welch’s research led him to portray McCain as a man who isn’t so much a maverick, as much as he is defiant and bullheaded. McCain’s also something else; he a master of coming from behind to win when all odds are stacked against him. Sort of like we are seeing right now. And this should be a warning to democrats.

McCain, a man of many contradictions, has on one hand distanced himself from his own Republican party by refusing to play partisan politics as Senator, but then as presidential candidate, he overtly pandered to the extreme right by choosing a polarizing running mate like Governor Sarah Palin. The over-arching theme to McCain’s life is his ability to find himself in losing situations and relish in it. McCain’s real nickname should be “Underdog” or “Back Against The Wall” or “Against All Odds” McCain, not “Maverick,” or even such salty names as his paternal heroes like “Good G*ddamn McCain” and my favorite, “McNasty” as Welch reports.

McCain’s apparently at his best when he’s facing defeat, and is at his worst when he’s on top. A couple examples of this come to mind. First and foremost is of course his POW experience. By now, we ALL know, Senator McCain’s a war hero (it’s sort of become his single defining characteristic on the campaign trail) and Welch masterfully explains how the McCain’s soldier instincts were honed by a long distinguished line of military forefathers and how took this paternal history took root in McCain’s formative years.

McCain’s life of highs and lows come at the worst times in his life, where like the mythic Phoenix, he rises from the ashes to reign again. The obvious example is his POW story.

Prior to being shot down during the Vietnam War and captured by angry villagers (McCain broke both arms and a knee during the crash) he was a jaded, cocky guy who didn’t seem to grasp the grave nature of the war, especially for those in the trenches. It wasn’t until he was broken, both physically and morally (he was beaten into giving a “confession” by his captures) that McCain found “himself,” and as we’ve all now heard throughout the McCain campaign this is when he “fell in love” with his country. It was this experience which led him to put “country first” and was a guiding force in his life.

We also saw McCain overcome defeat when his campaign fell apart after running out of money and being deserted by essentially his entire staff in July of ‘07. Look where that got him, the lead candidate on his party’s ticket. What might destroy any other man’s will to succeed, seems to be the recipe for success for McCranky (that’s what I like to call him).

Fast forward to right now, and we have McCain’s latest crash, burn and possible resurrection. Enter Sarah “Caribou Barbie” Palin, whose crazy train has come to screeching halt. In the days after her spirited RNC speech, news on Palin was sunshine, rainbows and unicorns in the mainstream media (except for those intellectual snobs at the NYT ;).

Palin, who was given a free pass because she successfully fired up the McCain ticket, is now being scrutinized down to her favorite moose jerky recipe (she’s likes it spicy!). Is this fair? Probably not, but that’s how the modern media does it. Pendulums swing this way, pendulums swing that way. Rarely do we get to hear the old “fair and balanced” news we so desperately need.

As McCain begins to lose ground in the polls, I hear the Democrats getting cocky and self-assured. Which really isn’t wise with this much time still left in the election process. Tonight’s debate between the two VP candidates will be mostly pomp and circumstance, simply because the expectations for both candidates have been set so low. All Biden has to do is follow the time limits for his responses and not look directly AT Sarah Palin and he’s golden (the man is known for being a “windbag” and has been cautioned not to beat the crap out of her because she’s a “dainty pitbull in lipstick) and for Sarah Palin, all she needs to do is not writhe on the floor and start speaking in tongues and predicting the apocalypse and she will be seen as a winner. Hey, don’t missunderestimate (a Bushism) her, she’s a whiz at glittering generalities and double-speak. Plus, she’s so darned CUTE!

Despite what some people think, this election is NOT in the bag for Obama and the Dems, this is when it starts getting tough and McCain will come out fighting. If people want Obama to win, they better do as the man does: slow and steady wins the race. The time for spiking in the end-zone comes in January, not October.

Oh, and it doesn’t help that the Dems historically have been known to throw the whole race away all Cleveland Indians style: with a lead in the bottom of the 9th and their best closer on the mound. Hey, what’s substance without style!

GLOSSLIP PSA: Slow Down, Pay Attention And Obey The Law

Sorry to be a Dawnie Downer, but after seeing a story about a mother and her 4-year old child who were mowed down by a driver who blew through a stop sign, it made me realize how we are all just one accident away from tragedy. I tell my kids all the time about how important it is to use caution and safety, to the point of being paranoid. The problem is, you have to be paranoid these days, people just don’t think.

I don’t know the exact circumstances from the traffic accident detailed above, but I do know people take their lives and safety for granted everyday. We assume that others will obey the law, but they often don’t. We assume that when the light is green, that means go and we just drive like we are on autopilot. All of us do it, but we shouldn’t.

There are some accidents we absolutely have no control over. Look at the sad case of Travis Barker and DJ AM (Adam Goldstein). When someone else is in charge of your safety, you are at the mercy of their skills and the hands of fate. But there are many, many, many times in our everyday lives we can avoid being the victims of tragedy by simply PAYING ATTENTION, OBEYING THE LAW and TAKING OUR TIME.

So I am telling you dear readers and casual passers-by, I know we are all distracted by life. Whether it be things going on with us personally, or the state of the economy, or gas shortages, the truth is, if you are killed in an accident because someone (including yourself) was careless or not paying attention, none of these other matters are all that important. And imagine how you’d feel is YOU were the one who blew a stop sign and killed an innocent mother and her child? Exactly. So think first and always, act second.

Also, please don’t use mobile devices while driving. DUMB, DUMB, DUMB!

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the mother and daughter who were killed in the tragic accident.

October Is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month

Won’t you consider taking home a lovable forever friend?

By all means, do not adopt a dog that does not fit your life, and do not adopt any more animals that you can reasonably take care of.  But if you’ve been considering adopting a new friend, this could be the time to do it.  Many shelters are offering discounts during October to new dog adoptions.  Perhaps you could start your search here, or at your local animal shelter or Humane Society.

If you cannot give one of these animals a loving home, please consider a donation of food, litter, or money.  You won’t regret it!

Don’t breed or buy (or clone) while shelter pets die!
