LUDEx 2004 (w/pics)

Postby Schwuk on Wed Apr 21, 2004 11:25 am

Back from the LUDEx. Dull show, but great to finally meet people...

The only real highlight of the show (apart from LUG Radio of course :)) was having a play with Looking GlassJava Desktop System which is also fairly slick (from a users POV - it's just a polished GNOME on SUSE to the rest of us).

All the usual suspects were there - Red Hat, SUSE/Novell, IBM - but the show was disappointing. It had a real 'suit' feel to it (except the .org village - there was noticable difference in attire!), freebies were in very short supply, and the whole thing just felt small.

In short: I'd go again, but only in conjunction with some sort of get together - the show itself wasn't worth the trip.

Some photos...

Aq interviewing some guy from Abiword...

Matt apparently worshipping the the ground Aq walks on...

Aq apparently seeing his thumb for the first time (whilst Jono gazes lovingly at Matt!)...

On a final note, I must apologise for the fact my camera really didn't do justice to Aq's shirt. It had to be seen to be believed.... It's very nice - once I learnt how to use it properly! It uses a combination of the mouse and keyboard to navigate, and runs at a decent speed. What impressed me most about it was the hardware it was running on - a (reasonably) standard AMD 1800+ desktop w/Nvidia card. It was running on top of Sun's

Yeah - wish I could've been there. I look forward to more photos and the recording.

At least I now have a picture for the desktop-Aq program.......

tiz was quite funny, we where shouting your name in the .org village, and looking for a cartoon character with bowler hat.

If that's true, it's both funny and flattering (in a weird sort of way). Mebbe I should get myself a bowler hat.......

Would I ever lie!? Another M.I.A was Sparks :( ohh well there's always October (To keep Sparks good name on this forum I shall not comment on the speculation of why he did not show ;) ).

'twas true. Wasted valuable drinking time. :(

Wasted even more whilst Jono was trying to scrounge some free beer. :x At least watching him stalking the 'booth babes' from rackspace was entertaining!

...and if Aq asked one more time if we knew mrben's real name...

Which leads into the next question: Mozrat - what happened to you? One minute there, the next...

I thought he might be in a suit of armour, having stopped by the fancy dress shop on the way there...

Your reaction doesn't surprise me. How did you not get arrested for taking photos of random women?

I believe the term is 'pneumatic'...

Bugger me - we were right! (except the Thorp bit)

You do realise you will have to wear a bowler hat when you finally meet up with us now... :)

On which note: I may well go to the October expo, but only if there is some sort of meet planned (esp. since I got such a good deal on my tickets - £73.80 return from Carlisle to London!). ...and to steal some of Jono's thunder, he was muttering drunkenly into his pint about arranging an 'offical' LUGRadio meet at some point...

Fair enough sir. Sorry for troubling you...

Does that mean if I call myself 'El Schwuk' I can get away with it as well? Or does it have to be said/typed in a venezualan accent?
