Sucks for the puny guy who bit off more than he could chew, and in an ideal world the basketball player would face a judge and jury for this. But if we don't have an extradition treaty with Serbia, and their laws don't permit extradition to the US, there's nothing that can be done at this point.

Although it would be a good idea to cut off all aid to them until they amend their laws and sign a treaty, but it won't help this situation (ex post facto). Not much comfort for the family of the kid knowing the same thing couldn't happen again, but no one ever said life was fair.

Serbia seems to have done what they are supposed to- fired the 2 consulate staff who may have been bribed or coerced into allowing the kid to leave, and possibly prosecuteing them. that said, without a treaty, they can't send him back.

I hear you on the women fighting part. When I worked in a club, we had to break up a fight between a few girls. There was one who would not let go of the other woman, no matter what we did. So, my one buddy pretty much "donkey punched" her in the back of the head. Yeah, she stopped fighting then. Was it the best method, heck no. But I'm sorry, when you have used all other methods to remedy the situation, sometimes you have to get a little extreme.

Couldn't they prosecute him in Serbia? I recall seeing things like that happen before even when there's no extradition treaty. I don't know, I don't know how Serbian law works. Can he be prosecuted there for doing something on foreign soil? At the least, they can get for bribing the consular officials. I think six months in a Serbian jail is about equal to the 10 years he'd get in a New York prison.
