Sounds kind of fishy, to me. I'll bet they're doing it just for the halibut.

This story proves what we've known for years: if a man smells something fishy he'll want to get a little prick into it.

You can tune a piano but you can't tuna fish.

///Thank you, I'll be here all week, try the veal.

Okay. Thread over. Everyone can go home now.

/You owe my employer a new keyboard, by the way.

The entire Japanese fishing fleet went on strike over fuel prices... 'Cause nothing shows foreign oil markets you mean business like starving your populace.

I've been doing that to tuna for years. I use something called a FORK.

Why not? We chain cows up for tasty veal. Its a matter of time until we get gorge-fed tuna.

Mmmmmm. If you try the above and salmon sashimi and don't immediately fall in love, you should see a doctor. There's a good chance you have a genetic disease called My Palate Sucks.

/A valiant effort.

The Japanese have a real knack for jabbing sharp, metallic objects into marine life.

FTFA: The company in Osaka that patented the technique claimed that calm tuna thrashed about less in their death throes.

Sooo, now I know why the wife keeps bringing up acupuncture.

/Here honey, try this shake I made for you; I'm not hungry.

I love sushi as much as the next guy (maybe more) but this is kind of silly. I don't understand why the insertion point is still a secret either. That sounds a little dirty if you ask me.

/mmmm, dirty fish

bofkentucky 2008-07-25 08:15:46 AM
They make tasty (Kobe) beef feeding their bovines sour mash and massaging the steers daily, so maybe acupuncture tuna will be good.

So, I take it you don't have any interest in a Kobe Beef steak either? The cows are hand massaged.

Will fish succumb to the placebo effect of "I'm not religious, I'm spiritual" pseudoscience BS?

No.

The entire Japanese fishing fleet also went on strike last week over fuel prices.

Expecting tuna prices to spike here soon because of oil prices.

I don't get the hype with Kobe, Hereford is just as good and quite a bit cheaper.

My parents take one of their Beagles to an acupuncturist to help with a back problem.

I'd make more fun of them if it wasn't working so well.

"Performing accupuncture to the tuna" is nothing new in Japan. (how do you think there got to be so many Japanese people)

/But don't say it to any Japanese men though. They find it insulting... and true.

//Big American Penis

PUFTAS 2008-07-25 03:19:34 PM
Maybe they should just hold off on the whole "fishing them into extinction" thing.

tansa [TotalFark] 2008-07-25 04:36:08 PM
Acupuncture doesn't really work on people, why should it work on Tuna?

/Really, there is no credible *scientific* study confirming positive effects of acupuncture beyone the success of placebo.
//Anecdotal evidence is not scientific
///The bible doesn't talk about acupuncture, so it can't be real.

joemax 2008-07-25 04:56:33 PM
Tried acupuncture after hearing people rave about it. Didn't do a damn thing. Meh.

Isildur [TotalFark] 2008-07-25 06:22:11 PM
Inserting a long, thin metal tool to calm them so they don't thrash around as much? Something's ringing a bell... and you say they're refusing to reveal where they're inserting said needles?

Acupuncture my ass. How much do you want to bet that what they're actually doing is simply the piscene equivalent of transorbital lobotomies? Sever a certain few nerve strands, and the fish get docile.

Either way, this is unlikely to go far, save maybe for a fad. If the Japanese fishing industry is already having trouble competing, as the article says, is adding a painstaking (and therefore expensive) step really what they need?

iammess 2008-07-25 08:04:46 PM
The Kobe thing I can see. Lots of inactivity combined with feeding beer, yeah, I can see that adding lots of intramuscular fat. The massage thing, well, it can't hurt. Probably calms down the cows so they don't move as much.

But acupuncture on a fish? That's a big stretch. I wouldn't think that their nerve systems are as developed as a human nerve system.

And acupuncture in a human is a very iffy thing. There really isn't any scientific evidence that it does much of anything. There isn't much evidence that it isn't a placebo effect. The electrical kind may actually do something, but regular acupuncture is considered bunk by a fairly large number of doctors.
