(UPI) Stupid In a flash of brilliance, police think "hey what if we post the weird 911 calls we get on to YouTube, because that will discourage people from making weird 911 calls" Yeah (31)

Like posting mugshots on line of people accused of crimes?

I'm glad videophones never took off.

Because giving dumbasses publicity and 15 seconds of fame will discourage the other dumbasses. Yes, yes, that's it!

People should have a reasonable expectation of privacy when placing a 911 call, whether "weird" or not.

What's up with US police releasing celebrity "normal" 911 tapes to the media?

They're not 911 calls, they're 999 calls.

You don't know that for sure. They could be 112 calls.

don't be silly. they are talking about police, so it would have to be 110.

/112 gets you fire and paramedics.

Yeah! This! Do you really have to surrender ALL of your dignity and privacy to be a celebrity? Sure, if you're admired by millions and you get a new lover or hair-do or even if you look like shiat one day, and you're out in public, expect some pictures to be published, for the pure entertainment value. But if you're terrified or traumatized, your call for help shouldn't be recorded and broadcast for entertainment.

stpats,Sobrrr: People should have a reasonable expectation of privacy when placing a 911 call

Nope. you're calling and interacting with a public agency. It's a matter of public record.

They don't release just the celeb 911 calls, they have to release *any* 911 call when a request is made. Don't think that they're spontaneously giving them to the press without a request....

Remember the Youtube video of the girls beating the other girl up? It got them all arrested, but that didn't stop dozens of other similar video postings from popping up afterward.

Well that's rather stupid. Privacy is taken more seriously in Canada. Your doctor visits are publically funded, but your medical records aren't public information. Should be the same thing with 911 heart attacks, suicide attempts, etc.

stpats: Well that's rather stupid.

Can't say I disagree with you; I was just pointing out the law.

But, hey - this is America, right? Everything's public record, unless it's covered by 'executive privilege.'

Well, at least the USA doesn't actually have a monopoly on dumb*sses.

Though we do have some on the other end of the line.....
