Isn't there a case where a federal prosecuter is trying to take down some pornographer who runs a site w/ legal girls who just look like their underage? I mean, how can these people determine that this is illegal material or not if they are just saying that they look like they're under 18? Now if they look 12, totally different though.

Forensics examiners basically know how to retrieve ANYthing off of a drive. You can wipe it to milspec but unless you used a taser or a clawhammer, they can pull the data.,

That's the gig.

What they are looking for could be anything.

It's like being on a diving team for the coroner. You get to see a lot of stuff you'd rather not see.

Forensics specialists don't do that, they confirm that files were purposely downloaded and accessed, when they were accessed, the search strings used and sites visited to find those files, etc.

/I work with computer forensics experts, so I'm really getting a kick out of some of these replies.

To be fair, I think teaching at an all-girls college would get garner a wide array of responses from people. Also to be fair, his behavior in court shows he is an incredibly pompous ass and would be the type to keep kiddie porn on his work computer.

Sometimes they are pediatricians, and sometimes nurse practitioners ....well they examine the images and using age markers they can provide an opinion that can be entered in court (expert witnesses) . If you are interested in a basic understanding of these markers look up the Tanner Scale.

It doesn't even say it was the professor's personal workstation, but if it was and students had access to it, wouldn't it be plausible that some disgruntled student planted the child porn? I mean, it's certainly possible this professor is that monumentally stupid to leave his child porn on student-accessible computers, but how likely is that? (Yeah yeah, more likely than you'd think). Regardless, the reporter apparently didn't even bother to get a statement form the professor...not even a "When reached, Blackwell had no comment". But there were statements from everyone else involved. If he's guilty he can rot in prison for all I care, but it doesn't sound like we're getting very unbiased reporting, here...

It possible, you usually look for other indicators, firewall logs, security logs on the workstation, they'll check his home and his home computer. If this guy is guilty there will be additional evidence that some images on the work computer.

If the schools security was so weak as to not have audit logs on firewalls and workstations then may walk if they can't find other evidence. Depends on the jury.

This guy is an a$$hat, A$$hats tend to have vices so he may have done it. Now a$$hats tend to piss people off as well so he could have been set up

For all of you out there, here is a helpful hint: lock your workstation when you get up. You don't want to have to depend on a jury ;o)

When I first came to VA, I didn't have a place to stay - so I ended up at my bosses house, which had 9 rooms. I was getting gas in my car, and there was a 16 year old driving a yellow Lexus in the gas station with me. I was 19 and driving a 6 year old VW. I haven't been back to Ashburn since I got my own place.

Given that this douche has already resigned, I don't think your defense model will come into play. He comes across as one of those overbearing types that, when faced with the facts, folds completely.

I was on a jury once (I know, I know, but they didn't even ask me any questions during the selection process) and we had this college professor that developed his very own case model for the arresting officer. I don't know where he came up with some of his shiat, because it certainly wasn't presented in court. Between him and the born-again-recovered-alcoholic, we ended up unable to reach a verdict in the case. Thanks for the tremendous waste of my time, boys! Save us all a lot of time and effort next time by admitting to the judge that you are a lunatic and should be dismissed, OK?

Having lived in Chicago (north side) and now living in Leesburg, I'm uniquely quaulified to help your thread jack

Berryville- Rural (that getting into REAL Va, in otherwords the poor farming, and conservative part of the state.

Middleburg- Rich, not Upper middle class but Horse Country Rich (or North Shore Evanston Rich) (in some places the minimum Zoning is 50 acres per house). Robert Duvall owns a house there and routinely holds BBQ/Tango nights at his barn. Downtown is charming but pricey not too far from NOVA and suburban civilization.

Winchester: quaint medium sized town in Rural Va (think Sycamore Ill)

Ashburn: Pricey DC exurb, (my brother lives there), pure Suburban housing development and strip mall, nice place, but housing prices skyrocketed during the boom , roughly doubling in 5 years.

I'd Stronly recommend Leesburg as another choice given the geography of where you appear to be looking.

On our university general-access PCs, we run an app called DeepFreeze; it locks the hard drive contents and allows it to wipe any changes after a reboot. Load on chat apps, spyware, or the vilest child-porn imaginable, and it's all pristine after rebooting.

If you just log out, though, instead of rebooting... the browser cache, activity logs etc. are still there. Including whether a file arrived in the cache before or after the good professor logged out. Once the local data was compared to network activity logs... it would be obvious that the student couldn't have done a frame-job.

I'm pretty sure they've got him dead-to-rights.

If he's as much of a pompous douche as it seems he is, he's the perfect target for a setup.
