Apple Video iPod Launched

The ‘Video’ iPod is real this time, replacing the non-video ‘normal’ models in the lineup!

Apple iPod Video MPEG4/MP3 Audio/Video Player

The new iPod models with video playback support replace the previous models, with a new 30GB unit at $299 and a 60GB model at $399. While the frame is slightly larger to accomodate the 2.5″ 320x240 LCD, the new models are actually overall thinner/smaller than the previous generation – the new model is 2.4″ x 4.1″, with the 30GB unit being 0.43″ thick and the 60GB is 0.55″ thick.

They are up at the Apple Store NOW so go get in your order fast![image]

Given the power of Quicktime that Apple owns, not surprising to see the new ‘vpod’ supporting MPEG-4 and H.264 video playback (H.264 up to 768 kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per second; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per second). And of course, given that this is a video player, Apple has equipped it with video out direct from the headphone jack (actually, composite video and audio through headphone jack, but it also supports S-video or variable line out via the new iPod Universal Dock).

Apple iPod Family

From the Apple iPod page: “The 60GB iPod offers up to 20 hours of music playback between charges, and the 30GB offers 14 hours. The iPod battery can be charged up to 80 percent capacity in 2 hours; a full charge takes 4 hours.” Great power even with the bigger and better screen!

The units are available in both white and black colors matching the iPod nano released last month, black no longer a ‘premium’ model like the U2 unit. In-box is the iPod, standard Apple earbud headphones, a USB 2.0 cable, a dock adapter, and a case.

Keeping up to date with the new advances in the iPod line, the new iTunes 6 was launched today as well, with 2000 music videos available at $1.99 apiece, and some TV shows will be available as well at that pricepoint (partnering with at least ABC).

Again, before they get backlogged, head to the Apple Store (and get free engraving and shipping!)[image]  ; )  Or, read on for the full release, hot off the presses…
