Yikes! We've decided to postpone our post-Easter series and now are working to put something new together. We're overdue for a book study, so we've decided to tackle Romans. We decided this today, and need to get graphics generated, like, um, yesterday. So I thought I'd float it out to ya'll first. ("Ya'll" is 'Bama talk for "my peeps".)
Romans. Yeah. Broad subject. We're hitting lots and lots of different things in a 9 week series. The pastor kept leaning towards something about the basics of our beliefs, the foundations, etc. Which makes me yawn. It's more than an intellectual exercise. This is a book that goes from legal jargon of sin and unrighteousness and sin and payment to talking about life and light and the Spirit and transformation.
"I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile." - The word "power" is dynamis in the Greek - where we get the word dynamite from. I was thinking Spiritual Dynamite for a series theme, or something with dynamite. "A Survey of our deeply held beliefs" just doesn't capture the imagination.
Any other ideas or thoughts? How would you "theme out" Romans?

I like your dynamite idea, especially that you didn't suggest Napolean Dynamite.
Blast Zone! Very industrial construction look.

says:How about the light/transformation idea? I have in mind a ray of light through a prism/glass being transformed. One reason this appeals to me (off the cuff) is the idea of transformation in Romans 12 plus the way Paul structures many of his epistles from "indicative" to "imperative." In fact, one basic division of Romans is that chapters 1-11 set up Paul's arguments (his "indicative") for his imperatives in the rest of the book -- all hinging on the "therefore" in 12:1.
Maybe these will spark a couple design ideas... or at least tell you not to use my cliche idea!

if your pastor is hooked on the 'foundation' idea, maybe play off of a gps device. the idea that the book of romans provides all true relevance. our true positioning in light of His truth on this globe. factual. directional. who can argue with the voice in my car that knows all the turns before i do?
(if you go with blogrodent's prism idea, i like the 3rd image a lot!)

GPS - God's Plan of Salvation! Just kiddin'. We actually already used that metaphor not too long ago. We filmed a video with a guy's nav system in his car talking back to him and giving him advice on his life. Good idea, though!

Rich - I like the light/prism idea a lot. I still like dynamite better, but our creative team didn't jump at that, for whatever reason. I'm out the door to a meeting about it right now. I'll report back dutifully...

We just did a Romans study (romans 12 specifically) called Authentic Worship... material and concepts borrowed from a few other sources I think. 6 week study on how we worship: Private, Public, Corporate, Relational, Radical, Supernatural.
Just throwin' it out there. The whole look/feel of the series was browns/green tones, vine-like flourishes... using perigord as our main font, along with Anzio Small Caps. I dont think this necessarily can work for all of romans, but it might at least start your juices flowin.
