PS3 PlayTV coming September 10th
Sony Europe boss David Reeves has confirmed that the PlayStation 3 PlayTV device will launch in Europe beginning on September 10th in the UK and then launching in other regions until December. For those unaware, the PlayTV is a device that acts as a DVR add-on for the gaming console, one that will allow users to record TV, even if they are playing games.
"Yep, it's going to be 10th September that PlayTV comes out," said Reeves in an interview.
"It was very difficult for some of the tech guys but we had to include it in the firmware upgrade, 2.41, but it's done now," he added in regards to the new option to record while playing.
The PlayTV will cost EUR 99 when it launches and there was no word on a North America release. Other PAL markets however, will see the device soon.
"We've got Australia and New Zealand also lined up for it in January or February, because on their digital terrestrial they haven't actually set the standards yet."

You'd think something like this would get pushed here in the US more sooner than later, but it must be something stopping them from doing so here. I'd love to have this feature also even though I already got a HDTV Tuner card in my PC. But it still would be good to have an all in one portable solution like PlayTV for the PS3. Anyone know if playtv does HD?
The whole point of PlayTV is to play and record HD broadcast television. Europe already has it, US doesn't. Sony might release it sometime in 2009 for US but only maybe. Canada gets screwed on this one... the PS4 will be out by the time we get HD broadcast.

I mentioned the reason in a previous post. North America doesn't have digital broadcast frequencies yet.
on another note some states in America have already completed transition, and are awaiting the shut off.
- thanks
My Media center PC's don't cost anything FREE...just connect the cable to the PC and thats it....Tivo is also FREE...when I bought it 2-3 years ago I got lifetime service...and my DVR is just like a VCR...sits in cabinet..put a DVD-RW in and thats it...if you need it cool...I just think that most that have bought a PS3 have DVR-type device in the house....Everytime a HDD is used it shortens the life span....how would you defrag it...makes me shreek just thinking about it....just my 2 cents
I can totally understand if you already have these devices and you don't think it's needed (hell I have my Tivo & 2 Comcast DVR's along with a multitude of other tech) but to cut it short for things that have no affect on it's use (defrag?), is a bit far fetched..

Also, all your components take up space, while with the PS3, you have a blu-ray player, game console, and a DVR in one peripheral.
Hey, it's okay to not like something but to not appreciate all that it offers...that's crazy guys!
Wow, so your telling me that you got 2 media center PC's, Tivo and your DVR for FREE? You didn't pay ANYTHING?
Wow, you either have really good hook ups, or i'm smelling something that comes out of your rear end.

I paid for them ALL...I bought them for reason...My PS3 was bought to play games and watch BR.....NOT to record TV....I bought the other devices for that...except the PCs....they just have that as an added perk...This sounds like the HD-DVD add-on for the X360...glad I didn't buy that...I bet you did....

How does this sound like the HD-DVD addon? That was a next generation optical media that failed to grab enough people's attention and just so happened to forefit. This is in a world of it's own. People who buy it would get it to make their PS3 a complete media device, if they don't have TiVo's or DVR's. PlayTV can't really "fail" since it wasn't intended for worldwide release.
Oh and by the way, I think the device captures more digital broadcast signals than available in a person's location. Watch one of the demonstration videos and you'll see what I'm talking about. Think of it as those old TV's that came with 30 free channels such as Discovery and Comedy Channel along with your local channels. Except they're region specific and in HD.

Agree, what's the point to have PlayTV...? I have already a bunch of recording devices... record the same waste crap into my PS3?, I don't think so.
I also want this but I live in NA. The US is somewhat lucky since digital broadcast is just one year away; I think it was Feb 2009. Canada has to wait until 2013!
================================================================
Sorry to dissapoint you, mate... in Canada has already digital TV !... and most of all in HD.
I have no appreciation for what is offered that I do have to pay a monthly fee or for a monthly "service"; Simply I can record and wacht it later or at any time I want without having the worries of paying for a "service"... No thanks!
Still I won't bother with the PS3 PlayTV
My best suggestion is for you guys is to afford the best quality DVD/HDD recorder. You may record onto the HDD of the recorder any shows, movies and programs you may like the same way you have done it with the VCR, then if you wish burn it onto DVD's, the PS3 plays back in excellent high quality DVD+R double layers disks.
Another suggestion install a WIFI card for your computer, after installation reboot computer.
Microsoft Media Player sync your PS3,( open Windows Media Player, click onto the Library tab scroll down to Media Sharing, at this point PS3 has sync with your computer. On your PS3 you'll see an icon from Media Player, if do not automatically appears then click on the PS3 'Search For Media Server' icon. From now on all your music and videos can at this point be stream without paying extra money.!

If you look at the PlayTV box, you'll see a little RF, whatever it's called, port to connect either to your cable outlet in your wall or to an antenna.

Also, for those who say they have all sorts of recording devices and abilities; congratulations, you are obviously doing well inlife, but please, calm down. I am not saying you have to like the product, just try and narrow any nay-saying comments to actual tech specs. Going with that point, maybe wait until you have some hard evidence, not hear say, or using your own speculations, if you were that smart you would be working for the companies developing these products, not on a third party website commenting on them. This article wasn't meant to prove how useful it would be to each individual who reads this, it is merely letting us know about a new product being released.
Logging in to forums, article comment sections, etc to pick a fight with someone or tear down an article and its topic is serisouly imature. Lets try to act like adults and take our news with a grain of salt.

Here's the great thing about life. You don't need to be persuaded by anything, so long as you have a choice, which MANY people at aD do. No one said to buy this, but people complain non-stop about "I have this" and "We don't need that". If people choose to buy this, they either know what it's worth or they put little emphasis in their choices.

Satellite 100% Digital TV... Now, you're talking about the quantity of channels broadcast. And I'm and was talking about Quality!
*******************************************************************
FEBRUARY 19, 2009 the day that the analog signal TV will cease in North America. If you still have a TV manufacture before 1998, you'll no longer be able to watch any programming except if you have installed to your TV a digital box converter. Newer TV's will not be affect it.

The idea sounds terrific, but what useless thing if the PS3 HDD is only max. of 80GB. Now you tell me how much High Definition content Music, Photos and Videos can hold a 80GB?.
No,... wait you have to expend more money to upgrade the HDD.!!!!
Now, according to the article above the PS3 PlayTV will act as a 'DVR' (Digital Video Recorder) a add-on for the PS3. So far I know the Blu-Ray disk player that the PS3 has, 'do not record', maybe it is with a proper Firmware that will unlock the potential. If my expeculation would be true, then I would have a second though about the PlayTV....who knows?

Alot of people are confused with this whole digital switch over:
1st off: Digital does NOT mean HD, it is just sending over a different signal, I bet $100 dollars that you will NOT be getting HD content through cable even when the switch over happens, but you will get a better picture.
2nd: North America does have digital broadcasts and has had digital broadcasts since 2005, it's called OTA, I use a UHF antenna and I catch 9 HD channels and 4 digital NON-HD channels sent out by FOX, CTV, Global, CW and much more. These companies have broadcast towers setup just for this. But remember that North America is not offically digital, when I mean offically digital, I mean that the cable from your wall from your cable provider, is still sending analog signals and NOT digital signals, not yet. Member 'rvinkebob' is right, ATSC is not standard here yet, NTSC still is.
3rd: Satellite is NOT 100% HD, Dish Network only had approx. 90 channels of HD along with Direct TV, but I believe that satellite is 100% digital signal.
Now with PlayTV, It has 2 tuners, one for viewing, and one for recording another show. You can have the choice for only using the one recording tuner, but you will have to stay on that channel while recording, besides, one RG6 cable won't break the bank. As well:
1st: As far as we KNOW, it can ONLY record OTA. No satellite support (That would just be to easy) and no cable support. Now the difference between OTA and Cable which doesn't allow recording, total beats me. I can understand satellite, because of the encryptions, but cable is beyond me.
Having this to only record OTA, is not totally useless, as time progresses, more companies will be using broadcast towers, especially when the ATSC standard rolls around. Like I said, when the switch over happens, you still won't be getting HD content through cable, but with OTA, you will, imagine your recording your favourite NBC shows in HD or recording the Superbowl in HD. Cable can't provide that.
@ muccione : You put a smile on my face :)
For my PS3 500 GB HDD has 150GB left..!

Like I mention in pre-post, I have installed a 500 GB external HDD on my PS3 with high quality content of Music, Photos, and lots and lots of Videos...,Racing Events, Movies, Music Videos, etc,... etc. (sorry, ...NO PORN).
That's why still make no sence to me of having a PlayTV.
