Yun (ユン, Yun?) and Yang (ヤン, Yan?) are a pair of video game characters appearing in the Street Fighter fighting game series. The characters are a pair of twin brothers known collectively as the Lee Brothers (リー兄弟, RÄ«-kyÅdai?, Chinese: LÇ-xiÅngdì). The twins made their debut in the original Street Fighter III and has also made appearances in Capcom vs. SNK 2 and in the portable versions of Street Fighter Alpha 3. Yun wears a blue baseball cap with a yellow visor, a sleeveless white cheongsam, yellow wristbands, and black pants and sneakers, while Yang wears a sleeveless salmon cheongsam, yellow wristbands, black pants and sneakers. The twins are two of few characters introduced in Street Fighter III who made appearances outside the Street Fighter III games.

[edit] Appearances

In the original version of Street Fighter III, Yun and Yang share the same frame in the character selection screen. Yun is the default character, selected with any punch buttons, while Yang is selectable by pressing any of the kick buttons, essentially making Yang an alternate design for Yun. In Street Fighter III 2nd Impact, Yang was made into a separately selectable character and his playing style began to deviate from Yun in this installment. This was carried on in Street Fighter III 3rd Strike.

In Capcom vs. SNK 2, Yun was one of several Capcom characters added in addition to the original game's roster. In this incarnation, Yun is selectable by himself, although the player can summon his brother Yang for special attacks. Yun, along with Eagle and Maki, were then added to the portable versions of Street Fighter Alpha 3 released for the Game Boy Advance and later for the PlayStation Portable (Alpha 3 MAX). Yun also appears in Capcom Fighting Jam for the PlayStation 2. His appearance in those two games are based on his Capcom vs. SNK 2 incarnation.

[edit] Fictional background

Yun and Yang were separated from their birth parents when they were young. They were raised by an adoptive grandfather who runs a restaurant in Shanghai and have eight underground bosses as godfathers. By the time of Street Fighter III, the two brothers are the leader of their local town. Yun, the elder of the two, is described as the more responsible of the two, while his younger brother Yang is calmer and more analytical.[1] Yun and Yang also have an unspecified family relationship with Lee, a character from the first Street Fighter game and one of the characters address the boys as the "Lee brothers" in their ending in Street Fighter III.[2]

In Street Fighter III 3rd Strike, Yun and Yang set off to fight a mysterious organization (Gill's group, the Illuminati) threatening to take over their village.[3] In their respective endings, Yun and Yang end up driving away Gill from their home town and the two return home to be greeted by their female friend Houmei and her younger sister Shaomei, who both harbor a respective crush on Yun and Yang.

[edit] Techniques

In the original Street Fighter III, Yun and Yang share all of the same techniques, including Special Moves and Super Arts. Their Special Moves includes the Kobokushi (虎撲å, Kobokushi? "Tiger Strike"), in which Yun (or Yang) stands to the ground and attacks with both palms, the ZesshÅ HohÅ (絶招歩法, ZesshÅ HohÅ? "Moving without Stepping Technique") in which Yun or Yang rushes towards the opponent with a fist, the SenkyÅ«tai (穿弓腿, SenkyÅ«tai? "Drilling Arcing Thigh"), in which either twin jumps high at the air and kicks twice vertically, and the ZenpÅ Tenshin (剿–¹è»¢èº«, ZenpÅ Tenshin? "Front Turnover"), in which the user flips over the opponent. Their Super Arts in the original Street Fighter III includes the Tenshin Senkyutai (転身穿弓腿, Tenshin SenkyÅ«tai?, "Rolling Drilling Arcing Thigh"), a more powerful version of the SenkyÅ«tai, the Sourai Rengeki (æ§é›·é€£æ’ƒ, SÅrai Rengeki?, "Rapid Thunder Spear Attack"), and the Gen'ei Jin (幻影陣, Gen'ei Jin? "Phantom Formation").

From Street Fighter III 2nd Impact and onward, Yun's and Yang's fighting styles begin to deviate from each other, with Yun retaining most of the Special Moves from the original Street Fighter III, while Yang gains new ones in their place. Yun gains one new Special Move, the TetsuzankÅ (鉄山é , TetsuzankÅ? "Iron Mountain Lean") in addition to the ones from the previous game. Yang on the other hand, retains only the SenkyÅ«tai and the ZenpÅ Tenshin, but gains a couple of new ones: the TorÅzan (蟷螂斬, TorÅzan? "Mantis Slash"), and the Byakko SÅshÅda (白虎åŒæŽŒæ‰“, Byakko SÅshÅda? "White Tiger Twin Palm Strike"). Their Super Arts from the previous game are divided between the two: with Yun keeping the Sourai Rengeki and Gen'ei Jin, while Yang retains only the Sourai Rengeki. They both gain new Super Arts to substitute the missing ones: Yun gains the You Hou (æšç‚®, YÅhÅ?, "Frying Roast"), while Yang gets the Raishin Mahhaken (雷震魔破拳, Raishin Mahhaken? "Quaking Thunder Demonic Break Fist") and the Sei'ei Enbu (星影円舞, Sei'ei Enbu? "Starlight Waltz").

In Street Fighter III 3rd Strike, Yun loses the SenkyÅ«tai, but gains the NishÅkyaku (二翔脚, NishÅkyaku? "Leaping Double Kick"), while Yang gains the KaihÅ (å¿«è·‘, KaihÅ? "Concealed Tracks"). Their Super Arts and other Special Moves remained unchanged.
