could not this complexity:

aryl refers to any member of the set of functional groups or substituents that are derived from a simple aromatic ring

be simplified to:

aryl is any functional group that is derived from a simple aromatic ring

Why is the substituent group for the benzyl and phenyl molecules the same? Also, I was under the impression that the phenyl groups related to the aryl alcohol.
