26 - 9 The 29th Rotterdam International Film Festival is opened by Michael Mann's The Insider and screens over 200 films. The Tiger Award prizes are given to Bye Bye Blue Bird, Mundo grúa and Shower, Best Film

February 9 - 20 The 50th Berlin International Film Festival is opened by the world premiere of Wim Wenders' The Million Dollar Hotel. The Golden Bear prizes are awarded to Magnolia, Best Film and Jeanne Moreau, Lifetime Achievement. The festival is closed with the world premiere of Bruno Barreto's Bossa Nova.
