26 February - Barings Bank collapses due to the activities of one trader, Nick Leeson, who lost $1.4 billion by speculating on the Singapore International Monetary Exchange, primarily using futures contracts. 17 March - Filipina domestic worker Flor Contemplacion is hanged for the 4 May 1991 murder of fellow worker Delia Maga and her 4-year-old charge, Nicholas Huang.
