Gore looks back
Gore draws loud applause for a speech that casts this as a replay, in some senses, of 2000, and particularly for a canned zinger:
Today, we face essentially the same choice we faced in 2000, though it may be even more obvious now, because John McCain, a man who has earned our respect on many levels, is now openly endorsing the policies of the Bush-Cheney White House and promising to actually continue them. The same policies all over again?
Hey, I believe in recycling, but that’s ridiculous.
Gore is also, strikingly, a rare speaker to mention abortion rights -- an issue Democrats have generally chosen not to press here in Denver.
"John McCain promises to appoint more Scalias and Thomases and end a woman’s right to choose," Gore says.

Unslotted in Denver
No point reading too much into who's been giving speeches in Denver, as Obama could always shuffle the lineup for his vice presidential pick.
Still, there are a few high-profile names outstanding: Al Gore's, most of all, though a Democratic involved in planning said he's expected to appear at the convention, Jim Webb's, Tim Kaine's, Chris Dodd's, and John Kerry's.

Gore compares offshore drilling to invasion of Iraq
In a surprise appearance at Netroots Nation — which apparently was the worst-kept secret in Austin, Texas — former Vice President Al Gore followed up a speech by Nancy Pelosi by laying out a narrative on climate change and the energy crisis that seems ready-made for the Obama campaign to download.
“If you look at the seriousness of the climate crisis, you see how it ties to the economic crisis and the national security threat that we face,” he said. “200 billion dollars are being sent overseas just from oil.”
“The idea that we can drill our way out of this is just so absurd,” he said, comparing the push for offshore oil drilling — which has gained popularity and put environmentalists on the defense — to dealing with a hangover by having another drink.
“The defenders of the status quo are the ones who have dug us into this hole,” he said, commenting that Americans have been “so often fooled into finding a remedy for a problem" that has nothing to do with the problem at hand — pointing to the invasion of Iraq when America was attacked by terrorists in Afghanistan as an example.
“The engines of distraction and the great concentrated power of communication that you’ve seen turned on this issue or that issue is already hard at work," he says. "They will say we can’t switch away from oil."
“We have to switch our electricity generation system,” he says, noting that changing transportation fuels will take longer, before reiterating his plan to ensure that “100 percent of our electricity [comes] from renewable sources and carbon-constrained fuels over the next 10 years.”
"It is not partisan, it is focused on this single objective," he says. "we are trying to mobilize ten million grassroots activists.”
In response to a question about whether he'd join an Obama administration as climate czar, he says he'd rather "focus on trying to enlarge the political space in which political officials address this climate crisis ... I have seen how important it is to develop a base of support.

Gore gets involved
The former Veep endorses Obama on his blog, and writes that he'll be at tonight's Detroit event:
A few hours from now I will step on stage in Detroit, Michigan to announce my support for Senator Barack Obama... I’ve never asked members of AlGore.com to contribute to a political campaign before, but this moment and this election are too important to let pass without taking action.

Carville's flotation: Gore for Veep
Former Clinton aide James Carville suggested on CNN just now that Obama offer Al Gore the vice presidential nomination.
"I think if I was Senator Obama I would say the biggest economic problem we face is the biggest national security problem and the biggest environmental problem. And if I were him, I would ask Al Gore to serve as his vice president, his energy czar, in his administration to reduce our consumption and reliance on foreign energy sources," he told Wolf Blitzer.
Blitzer responded with some skepticism that Gore would accept a second tour, but Carville persisted.
"I'm not suggesting he's just any vice president. I'm suggesting that Senator Obama as president would give him a lot of authority to deal with our consumption of oil," he said. "I think it would send a signal to the world and send a signal to Congress and American people that he's going to be really serious and we're going to cut it and coordinate all of that as the vice president."
I'm not sure James Carville -- with whom Obama had a public spat -- is the first person whose advice he's going to take, though come to think of it there is an open slot on the vetting committee today.

Gore v. budget cuts
My colleague Jeffrey Ressner reports:
Al Gore has become more difficult to track down than Waldo these days, but he came out of seclusion this week to contribute a video and email pitch to stop budget cuts aimed at California’s school system. Gore relayed his messages through the Courage Campaign, a political organization backed by longtime Democratic activist and former Howard Dean presidential strategist Rick Jacobs.
“I don't write emails like this often,” Gore begins in his written plea. “But, with Californians facing a massive budget crisis and potentially devastating cuts to education, I feel compelled to speak out.”
“Education is not a partisan issue,” he continues. “It is a crucial building block toward creating a more informed democracy. We can solve the climate crisis, and every other problem facing our nation, if we begin by transforming America's priorities on education.” In his video, available at the Courage Campaign’s site on Gore’s own Current.com, the former vice-president asks viewers to respond with their own videos or emails and get the word out about the California budget cuts.

Al Gore's vote
Al Gore hasn't made an endorsement, but he has made his choice.
Gore's Smith County ballot was one of the 631,680 counted yesterday in Tennessee, where Clinton won the state by a 54% to 40% margin.
"He early voted," said Gore spokeswoman Kalee Kreider. "As a private citizens, neither of the Gores are releasing who they voted for."
