I never cared that McCain took $112,000.00 in contributions from Charles Keating and was given a pass by his colleagues nearly twenty years ago. My problem was that he said he learned his lesson from that mistake, and championed finance reform; which sounds good, but in reality, meant nothing. The lesson I wanted him to learn was that, sometimes, a little bit of regulation can actually be a good thing. From the Savings and Loan crisis to Enron, to the present economic tsunami we’re in, McCain still doesn’t get it. So, why am I voting for him?
Barack Obama was right when he said that people are bitter about the abject failure of Washington to solve any of our serious woes. And since I’ve watched no other news outlet except FOX NEWS, since MSNBC decided to become the Tina Fey Network, my eyes have been opened. I know wrapping Bill Ayer’s around Obama’s neck is patently illogical, since every politician worth his salt has rubbed elbows with folks who see the world differently than mainstream Americans. But logic has no place in politics, especially the sort we practice in the land of the free.
The only question voters want answered is: Are you tough enough? McCain, Palin and the rest of the Rick Davis’ crew certainly are pretty bad-ass. Democrats don’t do the politics of fear and division nearly as well…
For Joe Biden, the best of times and the worst of times were separated by a matter of weeks. On Nov. 7, 1972, Biden won his first Senate race by a hair. He would be one of the youngest Senators in history, beating the good ‘ol boy powers-that-be by promising to fight for the little guy and bring a sense of change to Washington. On Dec. 18, 1972, a tractor-trailer smashed into his wife’s car as she and the kids were on their way to pick up a Christmas tree. The love of his life, Neilia, and their one year old daughter, Naomi, died. Joe’s two young sons lay in hospital beds fighting desperately to cling to life.
Joe contemplated suicide. He was furious at God for playing such a cruel joke; he was set to give up his career before it ever started. Eventually, friends and family gave him the support he needed to pick himself up and carry on. He was sworn into office at his sons’ bedside. To this very day, his staff has standing orders that he be interrupted from whatever he is doing immediately if Beau or Hunter calls. He made it a practice that he rides back and forth from Washington to his modest home in New Castle every day to be with his family. And every year, Dec. 18 is a day of remembrance for him.

Joe doesn’t come across as the most likable guy in a debate. Partly because his words are forced as he’s had to overcome a debilitating stuttering problem as a youth, and partly because he truly is an angry man, still fighting for the little guy after all these years. Joe chaired the Judiciary Committee through both the highly contentious Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings. So, yeah, he’s had his knuckles bruised on a few occassions.
Tomorrow night, Sarah Palin will charm America as a fighter who puts family first. Joe Biden has courageously been a fighter who puts family first his entire career. And he’s not about to quit now…
“Jesus would not be scared of the I.R.S.” So say a bunch of Christian lawyers who have formed the Alliance Defense Fund, based in Scottsdale, Az. The group organized Pulpit Freedom Sunday. What the hell is that? Well, participating pastors will intentionally jeopardize their tax-exempt status and deliver sermons to endorse candidates based on scripture. This does not bode particularly well for Barack Obama, since it was discovered in 1979 that God is a republican.
It’s true. In 1979, Paul Weyrich, Terry Dolan, Richard Viguerie and Howard Phillips enlisted Jerry Falwell to be their front-man in the newly minted political action committee they named The Moral Majority. It was created for one reason - to attack President Jimmy Carter for his decision to use the power of the I.R.S. to end segregation in private schools. Carter’s deal was that the laws were already on the books; segregation was illegal, so Bible Colleges and the like that refused to allow minorities to attend didn’t deserve tax-exempt status, since they were, in essence, breaking federal law. The rest is history.

Jesus spoke very little about John McCain when He walked this earth. In fact, when it comes to this particular issue, Christ only offered up one soundbite: “Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s
Buoyed by his big bounce in the polls, McCain marched into Ole Miss to take it to the uppity upstart from Chicago. 97 minutes later, the 72 year old gasped has final gaffes and sullenly slunk off stage. What a war…

Every hardcore McCain supporter watched a McCain triumph. Every hardcore Obama supporter watched an Obama triumph. Can you guess where I’m heading on this one?
Well, the pundits scored a victory for the old man on points, but gave the nod to the youngster on style. When the polls came in, 2 to 1 in favor of Obama, things started to get interesting. Team McCain started crying, “Why did Obama call McCain “John?!?”, and making an ad clipping together the 13 times Obama said McCain was right.
Now, my plan was to watch the debate with some folks who would fit into the category of “low-information” voters, and see their gut reaction on the spot. It was an enlightening experience. For example, the candidates sparred for 39 minutes over earmarks and taxes. What stuck out for my friends? Obama’s line that while 18 billion was a big number (earmarks), 300 billion was a much bigger number (Bush tax cuts). My friends were surprised that Obama supported offshore drilling and that the reason McCain opposed the current bill is that it takes away tax breaks for Big Oil - that was a real eye-opener. Drill, baby - WHAT?!?
But the most decisive point of the night wasn’t anything either candidate said. It was their demeanor. Obama didn’t hit hard, he did a lot of bobbing and weaving followed by a few love-taps. Spain? What about Spain? McCain came out hard and strong. He looked like a fighter. Punching and counter-punching. He came across looking mean. At one point, I heard a guy say, “Why’s he so mad?”Â
I think the answer to that question is simple; he’s mad because as of this morning at least, John McCain lost Round One.
Our next President, John McCain, will be deliberating with our current President, George W. Bush, along with Loser of the Century, Barack Obama, who has been working the phones for a week with House and Senate leaders to get a clean bailout bill through Congress, tomorrow; to get a clean bailout bill through Congress. You may need to re-read that sentence a few times to clearly understand just exactly what the hell is going on in Washington.
While McCain has journeyed from, “The fundamentals of our economy are strong.”, all the way to shutting down his campaign because the crisis is sooo bad that Armageddon will strike at exactly 9:00 am on September 29 unless the straight-talkin’ Maverick rides into town to save us; his poll numbers have fallen beneath the Bradley Effect threshold. Obama, having wrested extemporaneous details from Chairman Dodd’s proposed plan, called McCain this morning to see if the two could issue a joint statement and get this damn thing done.
Now, Barack Obama is done. McCain flustered about cancelling Friday’s debate, even though Bush, Dodd, Reid, Frank, Pelosi and a host of Republicans said they were close to a deal and that the presence of McCain and/or Obama would just muck up the works. Pundits from the likes of CBS, FOX NEWS, and CNN agreed that McCain was imploding; so, hours later, Bush had a change of heart, and “invited” both candidates to have a sit-down.
Masterstroke.

Please remember, this disaster is the result of deregulation - something Bush has been pushing for eight years and John McCain has been pushing for twenty six years. Please remember, McCain’s campaign manager, Rick Davis, has been profiting by his association with McCain while lobbying for the likes of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac up until as recently as last month. Please remember that Bush won the 2000 election by a vote of 5 to 4 in the Supreme Court, and that we’ll never know who really won in 2004, thanks to Diebold - so this year, the GOP decided, why even bother to show up for the debates? We know that somehow the Republicans are going to pull a victory out of their asses, we just don’t yet know how they’ll do it…
Question: Why in hell would any American -Â conservative, moderate, progressive, or liberal, vote for a seventy two year old guy who has changed his position on the most important issue we face at least seven times in the last nine days?
Based on three specific criteria, the American electorate is going to give the presidential nod to John McCain. Now, as an American, I’m more than just a little embarrassed by these facts, but there’s no denying them. Americans are racist, stupid, and lazy.
Remember when ex-Hillary supporter Ed Rendell said it would be harder for Obama to win because there’s still a percentage of folks who will under no circumstance vote for a black man? Well, a recent study proved Fast Eddie right. Six percent of people who share Obama’s stances on the issues are going to vote for John McCain simply because he’s white. That alone, in an election that should go down to the wire, is enough to keep the White House in the hands of the republicans.
The fact that Americans are stupid, and believe whatever they are spoon-fed by the media, handicaps Obama even further. Sixty one percent of Americans believe that Sarah Palin actually said, “thanks, but no-thanks” to the Bridge to Nowhere. The truth is, she supported it until Congress pulled the plug on it, but the McCain campaign has turned fiction into fact by barraging us with less then honest ads. The GOP is great at getting gullible voters to buy whatever they’re selling, 21% of Americans still think Saddam was at least partly responsible for 9/11, and 12% think Obama is a Muslim.
Now, the third part is a little trickier. You know all that hype about “change” that Obama has been pushing? Well, many Americans are actually turned-off by his message, because Obama’s point has always been that WE are the change we seek. That if you want a better tomorrow, you have to work for it; sacrifice for it. Turns out, a lot of folks want change, but only if somebody else does all the heavy lifting. So, they’ll opt for keeping things the way they are, even if they don’t like the way things are.
Unfortunately, those are the facts. I’m still going to vote for Barack Obama, and I’m still going to work hard to convince as many other people to vote for him as possible. But I’m not going to re-live the heartache I went through back in 2000, when I was absolutely positive that Al Gore was a cinch to win…

One quick note to preface this post: While I am all-in when it comes to attacking a candidate for their words and deeds on the campaign trail, I will not permit personal attacks on this site. Mental health issues are quite real, and quite serious. Although I strenuously disagree with Sarah Palin ON THE ISSUES, my heart goes out to her and her family as she bravely struggles to battle depression. In the end, people are more important than politics.
Now, on to the economic depression, an issue on which John McCain has stumbled badly these past few days. With what’s happened to Bear Stearns, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, AIG and all the rest, John McCain, in his best Herbert Hoover impersonation, keeps repeating, “The fundamentals of our economy are strong.” While the jobless rate soars, the mortgage meltdown is approaching apocalyptic proportion, and the deficit has never been higher, John McCain has told his supporters that the first action he will take as Commander-in-Chief of the nation’s economy is to appoint a 9/11-type commission to study the problem.
Senator McCain, the problem is YOU! You and the rest of your I’m-against-any-and-all-types-of-regulation conservative republicans are the ones who brought this tragedy to the American people. To think that the people who “broke it” are the best ones to “fix it” is patently absurd. Good, decent folks all across the country can’t find work. Good, decent folks all across the country can’t pay their bills. Good, decent folks all across the country are losing their homes, their families, their respect and their dignity because YOUR economic philosophy was WRONG.
Instead of regurgitating the same tired “reformer” rhetoric, Senator, the country would be better served if you owned-up to your mistakes; and once and for all, apologized to the American people…
Now, if you’re reading this and still haven’t decided who is better prepared to pilot America out of the economic disaster we’re now in, please listen to what Obama said just yesterday:
Months ago, John McCain promised the American people he would run an honorable campaign. Everybody from the New York Times to FOX NEWS agrees that McCain has not kept that promise. McCain has asked the American people to vote for him based on his character and judgment. I wish those were the determinants in this election, because John McCain has revealed lousy character and even worse judgment throughout every aspect of this campaign.
He’s supposed to be a reformer, yet nearly every major post in his staff is manned by a lobbyist. He violated the spirit, if not the letter of the law, when he borrowed millions using the promise of public financing as collateral. He chose as his running mate a person under investigation for abuse of power, even while telling the American people he wanted to put an end to cronyism in Washington.
But what about the issues, Kurt? He’s right on the things Americans really care about!
Really?!? He wants us to stay - indefinitely - in Iraq, even if the Iraqis want us to leave. He wants us to lift the ban on offshore drilling, regardless if it’s Exxon-Mobil, or the Russians, Chinese, or Venezuelans who are camped on our beaches. He - McCain - will raise your taxes more than Barack Obama. He will fight against equal pay, and against healthcare for all. He will fight to privatize Social Security, but he’ll still give billions in tax breaks to the wealthiest one percent of Americans.
Look, if you’re going to vote for McCain based on his policies, please know what they really are. If you’re going to vote for McCain based on his character, well, he WAS a hero - forty years ago. But today, he’s relinquished all pretense of honor, and he does NOT deserve to be President of the United States of America.
For some reason beyond my understanding, there seem to be quite a lot of folks of the opinion that Barack Obama can get back into the race when the campaign gets into the “issues” phase. Really?!? Hillary Clinton is now twice as popular as is George W. Bush. Therefore, since Obama and Hillary agree on the issues, and McCain and Bush agree on the issues, the Obama/Biden ticket will win an electoral landslide victory over McCain/Palin. No one believes that, yet swarms of progressives are still stuck holding their breath, waiting for this race to turn to the issues. Okay…
Most folks, in America, and in Iraq as well, think we should responsibly redeploy our troops out of Iraq. That’s Obama’s position. Most folks think we need to end the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest one percent of Americans and return to the policies of Bill Clinton, who gave us balanced budgets, surpluses, and a booming economy. That’s Obama’s position. Most folks would accept offshore drilling as long as regulations to keep Russia, China and Venezuela from getting the contracts; and regulations to increase our emissions and mileage standards; and regulations to stop speculators from jacking up gas prices were in place. That’s Obama’s position. And most folks think that abortion is a terrible, horrible thing, and that we should do everything humanly possible as individuals, and as a nation, to lower the number of abortions without making women second-class citizens. That’s Obama’s position.
But what about the debates, Kurt? The debates are where Americans make their ultimate decision based on the issues, stupid!!!
Really?!? Who won the Kennedy/Nixon debate? On paper, Nixon did; yet voters thought he looked like a used-car salesman with a bad case of flop-sweat. Who won the Carter/Ford debate? The issue wasn’t whether or not Poland was communist, Ford’s slip of the tongue made him look like a dummy. Who won the Reagan/Carter debate? “There you go again” was uttered in response to a boring question about Medicare - That’s right, that was the burning “issue” that swept Reagan into office. Clinton beat Bush 41 when Bush Senior looked at his freakin’ watch and Bill said, “I feel your pain.” W. beat Gore when Al went off about inventing the internet and W. said the way to stop terrorism was by making more bunker-busters. W. beat Kerry by draping himself around the flag, the war, and “hard work.”

Look, if you’re still undecided about who to vote for based on the issues, good luck - that ship has sailed. We’re in silly season till this thing is over, so buckle up…
