What's new in Episode 238
STUFF
• ExtremeTech's Editor Loyd Case joins Robert on set and has a new toy in hand. A Nikon D300 that will run you about $1,700. And that is without the lens.
• News: Reuters reports that FCC wants to auction off a section of the wireless airwaves to buyers that will provide free WiFi.
• Today's Tech Pic of the Week is from Max of Buevich, NJ. He show's off his "The Solar Engineer's Audio Setup."
• Before Loyd answers your questions, he has brought in some 'unique' graphics cards. 2 from Nvidia and 2 from Asus.
• Seems we got some bad info about the 20GB PS3. Sean of Knob Noster, MO got us this info:
A "real" 20GB PS3: 1. Has 4 USB ports (the 40GB model has 2) 2. Lacks chrome trim (the 20GB unit was the only model to *not* feature a strip of chrome-finished trim.) 3. Has equal backwards-compatibility with the launch 60GB model (the 40GB models lack backwards-compatibility with PS2 titles, but all PS3s will play PS1 games).
For more info: The PS3 Compatibility Customer Support Page.
And a basic backwards-compatibility chart is available on the PS3's Wikipedia page.
• We also take a quick look at Blackle
• And now, for the questions...
Raymond of Fort Worth, TX asks:
When I purchased Windows Vista Ultimate, it came with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. I have been using the 32-bit version since its release and I love it. I use my computer for pretty much everything. I am considering upgrading to Vista 64-bit. What are the pros and cons of doing this? Will I still be able to run my 32-bit applications?
Bill of Colorado wants to know:
Why are 15,000 rpm hard drives only available with the SCSI interface?
FRaGaLOT had this to ask:
I'm going to build a new PC, and I'm looking at the Intel Q9300. I'm a little lost as to what kind of RAM and motherboard to match this up?
Craig wants to replace a hard drive and asks:
I want to replace my C: drive with a new larger and faster hard drive, but I don't want to have to re-install anything. How do I do it?
Enrique of Atlanta, GA is building his own PC and asks:
I'm building my own PC, and would like to know, what is the sequence of software installation once you put all of your hardware together? Is it, drivers, OS, applications, updates, or perhaps BIOS flash, drivers, OS, updates, etc.
Jon of Mt. Airy, MD is in need of a new AGP Graphics Card and asks:
In light of buying a new gaming pc I am looking to purchase a new graphics card. I know for best performance you should match your graphics card with the CPU. I was looking at the NVIDIA 9800 line but I think this is not a good match with my processor. I'm not tied to NVIDIA or ATI as long as I can play UT3 without my PC crashing during the introduction movie. Any suggestions?
And finally, Matt wants to know:
I keep hearing references to something called a "LAN party". What are they, how do I set one up, are they fun, and why do they seemingly have such great food?
• I briefly mentioned the new Beta GPU2 client for the Folding@Home distributed computing application, and I encourage anyone with compatible graphics hardware to abandon other versions and use this instead - it's *that* fast!
The GPU2 client is available on this PAGE.
The current documentation says ATI 26xx and Nvidia 8-series or greater cards are currently supported.
Warning: This app will pretty much take over your system - it doesn't (currently) get out of the way of other apps you might want to use like the F@H CPU clients can do. Also, remember to get the latest drivers for you video card.
• If you still want a chance at a free T-Shirt, here is what you have to do...Produce a video. 20 seconds or less. Ask us a tech question. Upload to your account on youtube and send us the link with your full contact information. Name, address, phone # and shirt size. If we use the video, we will send you a T-Shirt.
Now, if you still want a T-shirt, go to Jinx.com and buy one. Less than $20.
• Next week: Jason Cross will be here with a Video Card Round-Up. Scott will have some Hands-Free advice for you. And More.

I second the "solar" show, with costs and setups and possibilities and different options. My wife and I are really curious about this and really know nothing about it, where to find out more about it, where to buy panels, maybe any "Do it Yourself" guides online, etc.

Hi folks. Great show! A couple of notes. Auctions of spectrum allow you to lease spectrum only, the spectrum remains the property of the citizens. Second note, if you're looking for success stories in municipal wi-fi, looks at small towns. It's the stealth success story in municipal wireless access.

You had to apoligize to fanbois because you didnt join in another overhype fest?
Really?

ok, I want you to apologize for running the clip at all.

It made no sense to run the blurb once it had passed since all the lemmings already have it marked in their calendar with little hearts around it.

I demand air time for Linux products. There is not a week that passes without another company announcing another sub-notebook running Linux.
Asus has that linux running EEEBox that looks like the Wii and a remote that looks like the Wiimote.

Brooks:
Piclens is fun but it is NOT a little program.

2.6MB for a browser ADD-ON ?!?!?

I had the same problem and out of the 7 add-ons I had, it was the first one I thought of taking off and I was right.

I get unconfortable when the add-ons are in the hundreds of kb but 2.6MB?

I seem to recall that Robert Heron wanted to know how to make the background of a web page black. I have a bookmarklet that does that and here it is:

javascript:void(document.bgColor='#000000')

My unasked question was answered - about copying a C drive to replace it and without having to reinstall everything. Most helpful thanks much.
