I used the Nokia software updater to update E61 firmware via PC. After a while I got a "Update failed" message and I tried again four times. When to Nokia support page and it recommeneded that one take the battery off an restart. The problem is that the phone is DEAD. What happened here. i am travelling for the next 2 weeks in the US. Do Nokia service centers here know what to do? Is there something i can try to revive this phone?

Sorry, I can't help either of you, but if this is what we can expect of OTA firmware updates, I think a major co** up is on it's way for Nokia...

I think you need to go direct to Nokia on this, and please update with any progress (or lack of) that you make!

Best of luck!

Firmware update works fine if you'll do everything as writen in the instructions.
You need install PCsuite before download firmware update, don't disconnect cable from the phone while update and everything will be fine.

ÙNokia will fix your phone for free if it's under warranty, if they can't fix it, they will replace it. :smileyhappy:

So don't worry about it.

Good luck,

I followed the instruction till the last letter...Downloaded and installed latest PCSuite, backed up my phone's data, battery was full, connected to power source, and General mode was set...As the first poster said I got 2-3 errors...Then all started to goin well untill the very end...I got an error...Phone was dead...Then I followed the advice I found somewhere to remove the battery, wait a few minutes and then try to switch the phone on...No luck...Phone remained dead...Wont switch ON...

Anyhow Im sure Nokia will fix the thing...But...Im on the road...and there is no Nokia Centar around...And I need a phone, so I bought a new one...Im VERY sorry for my not-so-nice words in previous post, but Im pi**** a lot...

There is nothing wrong with firmware update software, it's all about Windows or 3rd party software that installed on your computer, unfortunatly there is many resident applications could run on your computer that could couse a error while firmware update. I always use clean system for things like that because windows is a windows, never know what to expect. :smileyhappy:

Mark, what do you mean clean system? An out of the box computer for every firmware update. The fact is that Nokia does not provide any additional requirements or warnings and I followed every lien of instruction by the book. Including at the end taking the battery out because the FAQ said that even if the "update failed" message pops up the update might have been succesfu. This straight out of the FAQ. The problem about NOKIA fixing the problem is that I had to send my phone across the ocean becuase I am currently working in the US and no one here supports this device. Who pays for the shipping cost? I do! Why? becuase Nokia has put unstable software with potentialy malicious consequences on the web. I expected much more from Nokia in the firts place and a very rapid response to us who use their discussion forum to alert them of what must be fairly widespread problems among those who do not know they have this avenue to flag issues with Nokia's products. Shame on Nokia.
Kudos!

When i say clean system, I mean a system with latest updates without any 3rd party software installed. I use disk image of clean system, and I run a virtual machine for this kind operations, not really complicated to learn this, specially if you run intel based Mac. Software testers probably didn't test this firmware update with different resident apps and there could be some conflicts, that is why I always use a clean system for any firmware updates that could damage device because of the some conflict with 3rd party apps.

Thanks Mark for the explanation. I have used that for other purposes..but never as a precaution to download software update from a Tier one company like Nokia. The time they took to make available this option for any phone...and then some more for the E61 should have been sufficient for complete testing. i do not have anything strange on the laptop I used. Third party software not installed: Firefox, Adobe and iTunes.

In your view what should Nokia do to placate our dissapointment and elominate any cost to us due to their neglicence?

Well, to be honest I'm really upset with Nokia becuase there software for phones makes me almost cry and freaked out evrytime when my e61 restart while using wifi, their hardware staff is much confident that software, i should admit that they are much worse that microsoft. I'm not surprised that users have a problems with software update. E61 really a beta version of the phone and they don't give a **bleep** about fixing a real bugs in the firmware. I can't imagine how is it possible to release this kind phone when phone restarts when connect to wifi base station.

As the matter of fact Im a Mac user and I have XP service pack 2 clean as a whistle installed on my shiny Mac...Since I dont need that sys for anything except Nokia firmware updates /cause their developers are too lazy to make Mac version of their latest apps and tools/, I dont have anything installed on it...Except Nokia PC suite and updater app downloaded from Nokia site...

VERY clever thinking...Agreed on that 100%...But...

It is, how to say, very hard to beleive, that Nokia phone owners should make for themselves one more copy of the sys installed just for firmware updates...Then again, if there is a potential damage of the phone involved in updating process, developers should find a better way for doing that BEFORE they release a software...As a small shareware Mac software developer I have 7 different Macs here with different configurations just for testing 3 apps Im developing...And it NEVER crossed my mind to release something not fully tested...Although my apps does not deal with any hardware...

I know that 3 of us here who ended up with dead E61 are minority, and such a huge company like Nokia will survive for sure without 3 unsatisfied customers, but it is a matter of principle...

Anyway, to conclude, I know that I will never update any firmware on any phone in the future...I was stupid enough to try once...Enough for me...

It should not be necessary to have an 'out of the box' PC for the purposes of firmware upgrades. The environment should not, within reason, impact upon the process of updating the firmware.

Anything that can be destructive should have a rollback procedure. There should be some sort of recovery built into the process. There should always be a 'way back' if things go wrong.

Very worrying...

This is the way Nokia should do FW things:

"Apple Firmware Restoration CD

...The Firmware Restoration CD is used to restore the firmware of an ... to original factory condition.
It can only be used to restore the Firmware after an interrupted or failed update...."

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/firmwarerestorationcd11.html

Is it too hard to make something like that on Symbian?..I dont think so...

You'll have to wait until Jan 2007 then you'll have everything you ever wanted in the phone, and I'm sure the firmware update will be easy and safe with recovery option, but from Apple. :smileyhappy: Not too long to hold a little bit with Nokia phone. :smileyhappy:

I have the same problem, where my e61 died during a firmware upgrade.

Is there anything I can do beside sending it back overseas to a Nokia Center?

Nothing you can do. If you are in the US Nokia will not support this phone. I understand they do not have the right equipment to "flash" the phone. I guess that Nokia forgets that its products can and are being used globally not just by people who choose to buy itdespite their lack of local support, but also others who travel and might have to solve problems while outside their home market. I thought Nokia was a global firm until I realized that they have a country by country, or regional, approach to their "Worldwide" warranties.

This is unacceptable, but it is a fact of live.

3 of my friend had no problem at all updating theirs (we bought it on the same day from the same seller). The first 3 stage is smooth, but when come updating it promt "Updating software failed" - updating software to your phone failed would you like to retry the software update?
I have been trying for many days and times ! It just don't work :smileysad:
Now my e61 is still working but just that no updated version of firmware.
