Google Chrome - The Long Awaited Google Browser?

Posted: Mon, 01 Sep 2008 20:51:57 +0000

It seems like after all of the years of rumours about a Google Browser, it looks looks like it’s finally happening!

The project is called Google Chrome and is due for release or announcement on Wednesday.

A comic book was created to virally promote the new browser and Phillip Lenssen has scanned it in for all to see at http://blogoscoped.com/google-chrome. (If the site’s down atm then give it a while as his server is struggling.)

There are some interesting features in the new browser:

Per-tab processes, so if one tab crashed, the rest of your browsing is uneffected. A brand new javascript engine called V8 to speed up modern web applications. Fully open source encouraging people to add to it. An auto-completion url bar which will look in your history, sounds similar to Firefox’s Awesome bar. A dynamic start page showing links to your most visited pages and search results, much like the new firefox extension, Auto Dial. Built-in phishing and malware protection like what is found in Firefox 3 and Internet Explorer 8.

A lot of the features sound like they are just getting the getting the best bits of all of the browsers, but the per-tab processes sounds very very good! I don’t think the browser will have a market share, but then Google has such a big influence on the web and so many web properties who knows!

When I first saw the comic I thought it was a very elaborate hoax, maybe someone’s starting Septemeber fools day? But there are a few things which make it look like it is genuine, the following sites give different results to what you’d expect if this wasn’t real:

Google.com/chrome - Gives a plain page saying Not Found - Error 404, whereas a normal error page on Google takes you to a search page saying the page doesn’t exist. code.google.com/p/chrome/ - Gives a 403 forbidden error, instead of either showing a project page or giving 404 error if the project doesn’t exist.

I Seen The Queen

Posted: Mon, 25 Aug 2008 10:02:33 +0000

I was talking to a mate I went to school with the other day and we started talking about when The Queen came on a visit.

In our English lesson after the visit there was a competition to write a poem about the royal visit. I can’t remember what the prize was, most likely a book token or something.

Well I entered the following poem (to the tune of three blind mice)

I seen the Queen
I seen the Queen
She was wearing green
She was very clean
De de de de de de de
I seen the Queen

I didn’t win!! I thought it was amazing! I don’t think she was even wearing green, but I wanted it to rhyme!

What’s Your Oldest Domain?

Posted: Tue, 19 Aug 2008 12:03:26 +0000

I was just having a look at some of my domains and wondered what my oldest registered domain is.

It’s Killer Carrot and I first registered it back in February 2003!  I did have two other .co.uk domains as well, I had CrazyBadger.co.uk first but I didn’t renew that and let it slip a few years ago now.  The third was GiantFerret.co.uk, which I now have the .net version of.

Not sure why my domain registrations were all so random back then!  Guess I’m just a bit weird!

I never used it much apart from before Screenshot Sender got its own website.

I think my next oldest domain that I actually still use would be the SoundPack DB, but that was only registered in March 2005, seems much longer sometimes!

What’s your oldest domain you still own?

14 Things That Annoy Me About The iPhone

Posted: Mon, 18 Aug 2008 10:01:44 +0000

Just a rant about some things which annoy me about the iPhone!

Not being able to forward messages - I often use to recieve jokes which I’d send of to a few mates, can’t do this anymore!  I imagine this is something which will get added eventually, it’s not exactly rocket science!
Bluetooth only supporting Hands-Free Profile (HFP) and Headset Profile (HSP), not Basic Imaging Profile (BIP), File Transfer Profile (FTP), and Object Push Profile (OPP), meaning you can only use the bluetooth to connect to headsets, not send or recieve files from friends or even sync via bluetooth to my computer.  I’m not sure if it’s a hardware issue, or I expect it’s just limited by software so possibly in the future this could change!
No MMS.  I didn’t think that I actually used multimedia messages that often, but in the last few weeks that I’ve had my iPhone I know of at least 3 or 4 times where people have asked if I’ve recieved a picture they’ve sent me which I didn’t even know about!
Not being able to edit the auto-complete dictionary.  It’s quite useful that it corrects some of my mistypes, but I often shorten some of my words so I can type quicker, for example ‘bk’ always gets changed to ‘jk’ which annoys me!
Considering it’s basically an iPod with phone features added, the built-in speakers don’t go very loud at all!  My Nokia N95 was much much better in that view.
I have many multiple phone numbers saved under one contact name for Facebook, but even though they are all from the same contact, messages from all the different numbers show up as different coversations in the SMS app, how hard would it be to at least have an option to group them by contact and not just by number.
A 2 megapixel camera and not even a flash?  Seriously?  Even my Nokia N80 which I had 2 years ago had a 3 megapixel camera with a decent flash!
No removeable battery.  Not a masive issue, but for previous phones I always used to keep a spare battery which I would charge and take with me if I knew I’d be without access to a charger.  Also a friend recentley dropped his iPhone in a sink of water, normally you’d remove the battery and leave it to dry out, but obviously he couldn’t do that and his phone was ruined.
No call recording, this isn’t really something I’d necesarily expect to be built in, but I’m surprised there’s nothing in the AppStore to be able to do this, unless using the SDK it isn’t possible, I’m not sure.
Not being able to sync between multiple computers, I have different selections of Music at both home and work and it would be nice if I could sync both lots of them to my iPhone, but instead I had to burn a dvd of the music, take it home and then sync it all from the one computer.
Not sure if this is a SDK issue or down to the App developer, but I noticed with a few games I was playing that if I recieve a SMS it shows on top, blocking the screen and making me lose the game.  Surely the game could pause or something similar?
When updating applications from the AppStore, why do all the new icons have to go to the end?  I put them in the order I wanted so why do you change that?  How hard would it be to update them and leave them where I want?
No clipboard?  Surely this is something which will get added in a future firmware update.  I often used to copy a number from my contacts and paste it into a new message to send to people, annoying I can’t do anything similar now.
Custom Ringtones.  How hard would it be just to let me choose a MP3 or AAC file to use as a ringtone?  It’s my phone and I want to choose what I want to alert me to a phone call or message!  I know there are workarounds to create .M4R files, but we shouldn’t need to.

Just a bit of a rant about somethings which annoyed me about the iPhone, we’ll see if any of the issues improve over time with updates!

Testing Wordpress iPhone App

Posted: Wed, 13 Aug 2008 21:50:17 +0000

I’m just trying out the Wordpress App on my iPhone!

It’s not too bad! Looking forward to when it’s a bit more developed so it can be used for other stuff like comment moderation on the go!

The updates I mentioned for the MooPlug website the other week have gone live, so it should now be much easier to keep upto date!

I was pretty much ready to release version 0.4.7 when I started work on a new function I needed for a personal project, so will have to wait till I finish that now! But I think it will he worth the wait :-)

Dempsfest 2008

Posted: Mon, 11 Aug 2008 09:10:21 +0000

I had a party for my 22nd Birthday on Saturday, which ended up being called Dempsfest!

Was a good laugh, did have a Bouncy Castle booked, but they cancelled it at the last minute because it was raining :-(

Luckily I’ve got a 10m x 5m waterproof marquee thing, we all took cover under when the rain started.

I picked up two 5 gallon barrels of Black Rat Cider on saturday morning (80 Pints!)  and there were only a few drops left by morning!

Think I started drinking about 1pm, last few people went home about 2.30am, I stayed up drinking on my own for a bit and then a few mates come back who’d been out in town, ended up finishing drinking about 6am!  Little bit tired now!

Looking forward to Dempsfest 2009 already!
