Wilkes Barre Citizens Voice - Carney promoted to commander in Navy Reserves
Rep. Chris Carney, D-Dimock Township, was promoted to commander in the Navy Reserves this week from his previous ranking of lieutenant commander.
Carney was one of 34 intelligence officers in the reserves promoted to commander, and is one of two members of Congress actively serving in the reserves.
“I’m very proud to be selected, particularly with the other cadre of officers who have been selected,” Carney said. “I know many of them, respect them and have worked closely with some of them over the years. They’re just top-notch people, and to be considered among them I’m very humbled and very gratified.”
Carney faces Republican Chris Hackett this November in what is expected to be a close election.
Although Carney was notified of his promotion earlier this week, he will not officially “pin on” his new rank until late Spring 2009, during an official ceremony. The promotion comes a year earlier than Carney said he expected, but he’s proud his “commitment to the reserves” is recognized.
Commander is four ranks below admiral, the Navy’s highest officer rank.
“There is a certain sense of pride that only people who have worn the uniform can really understand,” Carney said. “The first time one looks at one’s self in the mirror in uniform, you’ve changed. You’ve become something beyond just yourself.”
Carney joined the Navy Reserves in 1995. He was activated during for service in Iraq, Afghanistan and other areas in Operations Southern Watch, Noble Eagle and Enduring Freedom. Carney’s father, brother and other family members have served in the military.
“In the good-natured ribbing of my father, who was an enlisted sailor, he told me, ‘Big deal, this is nothing,’” Carney said. “(My parents) are proud, though … I’m grateful I can still serve and be a member of Congress.”
