Dry Ice Bomb
Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide. At normal atmospheric pressure and temperature it sublimates (changes directly from a solid to a gas), resulting in a tremendous increase in volume. So what happens if you put dry ice in a closed container? Pressure quickly builds up and the container explodes. Dry ice is available for purchase at some large supermarkets or you may be able to ask for it at ice cream shops. (They use it to ship the ice cream.) A few pounds of dry ice will make several bombs.

danger level
negligible moderate high do not do this
tools
C. Hammer D. Glove E. Sharp knife
materials
A. Plastic water bottle or similar B. Chunk of dry ice
how-to
Use a hammer to break the dry ice into small chunks that will fit through the neck of the bottle. Optionally, you can lightly score the side of the bottle with a knife. This creates a weak spot where the bottle can break cleanly, rather than just having the cap blow off. Experiment to see what works best. Insert 15-20 chunks of dry ice into the bottle. Adding more will make your bomb explode faster, but not necessarily with more force. Use a thick glove to protect your hand. Dry ice is -109.3°F and can cause frost bite very quickly. Pour in enough water to cover the dry ice. This dramatically speeds up the sublimation. Quickly cap the bottle and toss it somewhere safe. (Away from yourself and anything else living.) Wait for the bottle to explode. Generally it will take 10-30 seconds, but it could take longer. Be very careful about approaching or touching a bottle that hasn’t exploded. The pressure will probably keep increasing for a long time and it could blow at any moment, especially if you disturb it.

Water bottles are good for maybe 80 psi. Soda bottles, like Coke, etc., don’t rupture until around 200+ psi, so they will make a much bigger (and more dangerous) blast. Larger bottles (1, 2, 3 litre) have proportionately more gas volume, and therefore more power, as well.

Just a thought; wouldn’t sinking the bottle in the lake with a brick mean there would have to be more pressure for it to burst? Isn’t the pressure of water exerting two atmospheres of pressure at a depth of only 33 feet? So, the pressure inside the bottle would have to be high enough to overcome both the resistance of the bottle and the increased pressure from the water trying to compress the bottle. At about 100 ft of depth, there has to be an additional 59 pounds of pressure to counteract the water. So, if you’re gonna try it, stick to the shallow end of the pool boys.

They used it like a mortar, threw in the Dry Ice Bomb, threw in a Potato and aimed it. Let me tell you it flew incredibly high. Perhaps a new heatless bazooka for the army?
Well anyway, what I thought off was instead of using a potato, why not use ANOTHER Dry Ice Bomb? If you make sure the fuse for the “explosive” is faster than the fuse for the projectile, you could theoretically make the projectile explode in mid air. Add some food colouring and wala, flameless fireworks! I don’t think this has been tried before due to the obvious danger, but with a helmet, gloves and thick clothing it should not be too dangerous.

1. Fill 50ml conical tube with 5ml water
2. Steady the empty 5 L graduated cylinder between your neck and shoulder
3. In VERY quick motions perform the next steps
a. drop a couple chunks of dry ice into tube.
b. tighten lid on conical (HURRY)
c. release/slide conical down graduated cylinder (Lid first, conical facing out of tube)
4. Aim and wait…
It typically didn’t take long.
The weakest portion of the conical tube was the thin plastic of the lid, so the blast was contained and propelled the conical tube forward out of the tube. These tubes can cause substantial damage. I’ve seen the plastic conical pieces submerged up to an inch into a plaster wall. Don’t aim it at a person.

This way, you will have plenty of time to formulate an alibi. Also, it is much louder. I think it’s because the pressure builds up more gradually, and the plastic becomes more brittle because of the cold. You can hear it for BLOCKS. Don’t know if my friend actually invented the technique - but I first heard about it over 20 years ago while I was in college. My friend tried it at his house and the police came out and darn near arrested him. Over the ensuing years we went on several dry ice bombing expeditions. Quite memorable as we collectively saved hundreds of bottles and bought about the same poundage of dry ice for each trip. My friend even figured out how to grind the dry ice to bottle neck sized chuncks with a car battery powered ice crusher. Much easier to fit in the bottle and faster reaction time - so yes, squeezing the bottle is a great idea. We never had any serious injuries but did have some close calls before we started wearing both ear and eye protection. Got ticketed by some park rangers too for disturbing the peace. Blew a chained lid off a garbage can too - so yes, these things are extremely powerful and load - we’re talking CANON loud! If you are out in the woods? The extra CO2 will attract ticks and other bugs like CRAZY since this is one thing they sniff to find you! Safe way to defuse a pregnant bomb? BBgun.

Pretty powerful using a 2 liter plastic Pepsi bottle. It is a felony in a lot of states. I’m in Calif. and you can be arrested. You can google “dry ice bomb” and find the wording of a bomb consisting of a chemical reaction is against the law. Dry ice and water is technically not a chemical reaction. The dry ice sublimates into a gas from a solid. I did this with my daughter for her science project and the explosion was louder than a shot gun using the 2 liter bottle. We put a 5 gallon bucket over the next one. It blew the bucket in half and shot it up about 20 feet. Wear eye protection and don’t touch the bottle after it is capped to be safe. Raley’s grocery store has dry ice and sells it for one dollar a pound.

do this with a gatoraid bottle, the kind with the cap you dont have to take off to drink. It wouldnt explode so i tossed it onto my driveway, the cap shattered into 50 pieces and launched the bottle 50 feet. also fun to get a pot of boiling water and drop dry ice in, lots of fog

We made a dry ice cannon out of a cut down piece of exhaust stack from a new truck at work. Welded an old pulley on the bottom to seal one end. A 2 liter bottle would fit with a little play on the sides. One person would fill the 2 liter with ice/water while another person wadded up some shrink wrap. The shrink wrap acts as a wadding & helps seal the tube. Throw the 2 liter in, stuff the shrink wrap in & top it off with the projectile of your choice. Another 2 liter with water works well. They launch hard & fast. It works okay without the shrink wrap, but we had plenty at work at our disposal.

Legal Warning:
I overheard a story about someone who was in trouble with the law for something that sounds a lot like this. Instead of treating it as a “bomb” case, they were being charged with “tampering with a pressure vessel”; because, the pop bottles are designed to hold pressure. This made the case a felony. It was a novel interpretation of the laws written to stop people from tinkering with industrial boilers and steam systems.

An alternative to the dry ice that is easier to obtain and works just as well is aluminum foil and “The Works” toilet bowl cleaner. Tear off pieces off the foil and loosely ball it up to about the size of a marble. Put 6 or 7 balls of foil in the bottle and put 3 or 4 squirts of the toilet cleaner in. Cap it off, give it a few shakes and get away from it. Downside is, you have toilet bowl cleaner flying around in addition to the explosion, and is still just as illegal, so don’t do it!
