Interactive

The Berkman Center's Interactive collection features conversations with and talks by leading cyber-scholars, entrepreneurs, activists, and policymakers as they explore topics such as: the factors that influence knowledge creation and dissemination in the digital age; the character of power as the worlds of governance, business, citizenship, and the media meet the Internet; and the opportunities, role, and limitations of new technologies in learning.

All Berkman events, including conferences, luncheon series talks, and most meetings, are webcast then archived here, along with unique productions like the Citizen Media Law Project podcast and episodes of Berkman.tv. A selection of the archive is also available on Berkman's YouTube channel.

Our back catalogue of more than 250 presentations is being integrated with the list below on an ongoing basis. While we are in transition, please visit MediaBerkman for a more complete selection.

Rising Voices: Helping the global population join the global conversation

As much as participatory media have democratized how we find out about the world around us, the new global voices tend to come from a narrow demographic: highly educated, urban, and upper-middle class. Rising Voices is a citizen media outreach initiative of Global Voices. David Sasaki, Global Voice's director of outreach, discusses the successes, challenges, and lessons learned over the past 18 months of training under-represented communities how to take advantage of new media tools to participate in the 21st century global conversation.

“Why the Soviet Internet Failed†- Ben Peters (Yale ISP)

Ben Peters presents preliminary findings of a dissertation chapter examining why the Soviets did not succeed in building an ARPANET-equivalent. In particular, he examines Soviet bureaucratic and social structures as decentralized networks, compares them to conventional critiques of centralized power, and speculates on the chapter's relevance for modern-day practices of power distribution.

“Global Voices, One World: Towards a Hospitable Public Sphere by Global Citizen Media†– LokmanTsui (Berkman Center)

How does the news shape the way we see the world? And how is global citizen media changing the way news is produced? I address these questions by examining the strategic case study of Global Voices (http://www.globalvoicesonline.org) to gain a better understanding of the production of news that is more in tune with today's differentiated media ecology while offering media hospitality as a normative theoretical framework that can help us think through the twin challenges of the internet and globalization.

Public Services Reform and Information Technology in Developing Countries

Jennifer Bussell evaluates technology policy variation in the context of public service reforms in the Indian states and argues that policy differences across the states are driven not by economic development or previous technology investment, but rather by politicians’ calculations over their potential to retain power.

Open Access to Government Documents

In the past twenty years, a remarkable number of government documents have been put online. In some cases, these documents are made easily and freely accessible. In others, technology has failed to overcome barriers or even created new barriers to access. Stephen Schultze makes a dynamic case for free access to government documents, in honor of Open Access Day 2008.

Insights on Cyberbullying: an interview with a digital native

Digital Natives' Reporters-in-the-Field asked 19 year old UMASS student and New Jersey native, Lisa Epstein, to share her thoughts on the world of cyberbullying. Banning Copyright Infringers from the Internet: A View from Europe

At a time when the French legislative authorities are about to vote on a new copyright regulation under which the internet access of copyright infringers can be shut down while other regulators in Europe (at the EU or at the national level) are debating about the constitutionality and the fairness of such sanction, it appears interesting to present and to discuss the pros and cons of this controversial approach as well as the challenges that it raises.

Internet Draws Masses for ‘Silent Dance’ Experiment

Diane Kimball and Sarah Zhang take us into the world of the “silent dance experiment†- a silent, synchronized dance party which, with the help of the Internet, drew throngs of people from all over Boston, the US, and the world to Faneuil Hall in Boston in February. Such “flash mob†happenings have picked up in popularity over the last few years thanks to the publicity they have gained through blogs, online event pages, and most especially Facebook. Of the event in Boston, one site wrote, this “silent dance party involves a large group of people assembling at a given area on a pre-decided time. They mill around inconspicuously, and at the signal (in this case, an airhorn), insert their headphones into their ears, hit play on their portable music player and start dancing as passersbys confusingly look on as a swarm of people dance in silence.â€

Digital Natives reporter Nikki Leon chatted online with Qin Zhi Lau, a second-year Princeton student who runs the blog aznplay.com in his spare time.
