New San Antonio Auxiliary Bishop is 41

That's the story at this link from the Whispers in the Loggia blog. The new auxiliary will assist Archbishop José Gomez of San Antonio and will be the youngest bishop in the U.S. The new bishop is the Rev. Oscar Cantú and, like Gomez, is Hispanic. Young, Hispanic, Sunbelt: that's the demographic and geographic trend in U.S. Catholicism. Here is the link to the Archdiocese of San Antonio website. San Antonio is a great city and is also the home of Catholic biblical scholar Fr. George T. Montague whose new book Holy Spirit, Make Your Home in Me: Biblical Meditations on Receiving the Gift of the Spirit (The Word Among Us Press, 2008), I recently finished. Fr. Montague is a first-rate biblical scholar and former president of the Catholic Biblical Association of America. He is professor of biblical theology at San Antonio's St. Mary's University and is also a leader in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. (I recently played a very minor role in helping to edit a new volume that he has written in a Catholic biblical commentary series being published by Baker Academic publishers; here is the link to the upcoming volume in this Catholic series, which includes a volume by Scott Hahn). His recent book on the Holy Spirit is practical, deeply spiritual, and full of biblical insight. It is an invitation to receive more from the Holy Spirit. Virtually all the chapters end with a prayer. Here is a sample from the book:

Lord Jesus, you are the missionary of the Father. You were anointed by the Holy Spirit to fulfill your mission, and you continue to send your Holy Spirit upon your church, just as you did at that first Christian Pentecost. Baptize me anew in your Holy Spirit. Empower me to build your church and your kingdom in this world. Amen.

Montague, p. 204 (emphasis added).

We hear a lot as Catholics about declining numbers in various categories. We hear a lot about the empty churches of Western Europe. We hear a lot about the spread of Islam in that same Europe. I heard one priest comment that the type of Christianity that Islam is sweeping aside in some places is a form of "powerless" Christianity. The medicine that transforms "powerless" Christianity into powerful Christianity is a new Baptism in the Holy Spirit. I highly recommend Fr. Montague's books.

Archbishop Chaput Address to Hispanic Business Leaders

Here is the link to the Denver archdiocesan newspaper. I agree with the Archbishop that Hispanic Catholics will have a greater impact on the Catholic Church in the U.S. The other data out there supports this view. Chaput's views are important because he has proven to be one of the most effective, innovative, and evangelical of U.S. bishops. Yes, "evangelical" because the Gospel is Catholic.
