by: Libby Shaw

Sat Nov 15, 2008 at 05:36 PM CST

(David is currently in first, but barely. David Cameron, the second place writer has had some not nice stuff to say about us.  He has called us a mob.  He said the only reason people are voting for David are shared political beliefs. The reality is, David Mauro is a great person and impressive writer. He deserves a $10,000 scholarship to help pay for his education.  He still needs your help, your vote, and your friends to vote. The deadline is November 20 and the two Davids continue to switch between first and second.  Go vote now! - promoted by Matt Glazer)

(David is a finalist for a blogger college scholarship.)

11/18/2008:  Kos is asking Kossacks to vote for David under "midday open thread."

David Mauro of the Burnt Orange Report is closing on a chance to win a $10,000 college scholarship. Take 30 seconds and vote for him so we can help one of our own get through college. I thought this thing wrapped up today, but now I'm hearing it goes until Thursday. Either way, take 10 seconds to help out one of our own.

The Republican Party of Intolerance

by: Libby Shaw

Tue Nov 11, 2008 at 01:01 PM CST

Cross posted at Texas Kaos.

Thanks to his brilliant grassroots efforts, his exhaustive and skillful  community organization talents,  President Elect Barack Obama has pulled off a landslide Election. Through his exhaustive campaign in which he elicited the support of thousands of volunteers, his extraordinary discipline, his tireless, never ending hard work, the severe lack of sleep, the sacrifice of his personal and family life, and despite the attacks and the attacks and the attacks and the misinformation and the misinformation and the blatant media bias, the bias, the bias, and the appalling regional ignorance, the ignorance, the ignorance, and the hate talk, the hate talk, the hate talk, somehow, despite all of the symbolic and vociferous right wing smearing and screaming, finally the majority of Americans heard through the deafening clamor and voted for truth, hope, change and a return to normality.

According to today's New York Times:

The">http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11...

The president-elect won overwhelmingly among blacks, Hispanics and voters under the age of 30. He made inroads among important swing groups, including Catholics, suburbanites, political independents, even veterans. He won in the Midwest, where Mr. Kerry had lost. He even made small gains among groups that typically have been solidly Republican - whites, conservatives, Southerners, regular churchgoers.

And, according to the The Politico, the most affluent voters were key to Obama's win.

Thankfully, for the entire planet, the last eight years of the Republican Dark Ages and Reign of Financial Terror have crashed and burned, hopefully forever.

Ding dong the wicked wizards are gone.

We have dismantled the Republican wrecking ball.

Hate talk did not work.

Early Voting in Texas Up One Million From 2004

by: Libby Shaw

Fri Oct 31, 2008 at 01:43 PM CDT

( - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

According to the Houston Chronicle one million more residents have voted so far, with one day left for early voting in Texas.    In Harris County (the largest district in the State) Democratic voters outnumber Republicans.
Leland Beatty, a Democratic consultant, said 42 percent of early voters had voted in Democratic primaries and 20.6 percent in Republican primaries.

A Republican strategist here said the reason for the higher turnout is due to huge participation during the Primary when large numbers of voters came out to vote for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.  The strategist said some of those voters were Republicans who will vote for McCain during the General.

Well, we will see about that.  My crystal ball is the same size as the GOP strategist and I'm not even a strategist.  If the Texas Republican base is comprised of 23% of dumb bunnies who choose to believe Senator Obama is a Muslim we may be able to assume that 77% of Texans may just engage their brains before voting.  After eight years of W. &Co. we can also assume that 77% percent of voters here understand that they are far worse off than they were in 2000.  A vote for McCain should translate to a vote against one's own self-interests if not our very financial survival.

I find the results of the poll to be so embarrassing and alarming that I had to force myself to post this diary.

Meet the base of the Texas Republican Party, folks.

There is, of course, nothing actually wrong with one being a Muslim but the implication where seriously misinformed and low information voters are concerned is highly disturbing.  Do they honestly not know Obama's religion or do they choose to ignore the truth?

The bias against Muslims is bad enough and we have G.W. Bush and his fanatical right wing neonut base to thank in demonizing all members of this religion.  W.'s reckless and careless language about "Islamic Fascism" has served to paint all members of the faith as potential terrorists.

From the front page of Raw Story.com.

The poll conducted this month by the University of Texas found that less than half the state's voters, a majority of whom support John McCain's candidacy, could correctly identify the religion of the Democratic presidential candidate. Obama has been a member of the same Christian church in Chicago for more than 20 years, and he faced controversy earlier this year when controversial statements from the church's former pastor appeared online.

When asked Obama's religion, 22.7 percent of the respondents said Muslim, while 45 percent correctly said Protestant.

TX: Harris County: More Good News for Democrats

by: Libby Shaw

Sun Oct 26, 2008 at 05:30 PM CDT

The Houston Chronicle has become a gift that keeps on giving good news for Democrats in the Houston area.

Today's lead story:

"Except for Emmett, Poll Sees Dem Sweep."

Judge Emmett is ahead because he and Houston's Mayor Bill White worked well together in addressing Hurricane Ike's aftermath. He is likable and folks trust him.

The surprising and great news is that Harris County's Democratic judicial candidates are in a dead heat tie with Republicans.

Voters favored Democratic candidates over Republican candidates by 7 percentage points in elections for county leadership jobs, except in the county judge's race, where Emmett has a 13-point lead over Democrat David Mincberg, according to the survey. Sixteen percent of the respondents were undecided or said they lean toward neither party's entry.

The number 7 also popped up specifically in the race for district attorney; Democrat C.O. Bradford ran 7 percentage points ahead of Republican Pat Lykos in the poll, conducted Monday through Wednesday as early voting began for the Nov. 4 election.

The poll results indicate tough years lie ahead for the GOP.  This is absolutely drop dead fabulous news considering it was not long ago when Karl Rove and Tom Delay hatched their Texas Permanent Republican Majority scheme. We are now stuck with the consequences manufactured by these two Republican low life crooks.

Today's  Houston Chronicle reports that Rick Noriega and Barack Obama are up by seven percent in Harris County.  For the first time in forty-four years, Harris County voters are on the verge of favoring a Democratic Presidential candidate.

WOW.

Hats off to the Noriega campaign and the Harris County Democrats for their exhaustive efforts.

They gave Barack Obama the edge over Republican John McCain by 7 percentage points this week, with very few undecided or backing another contender.

Voters also favored Democrat Rick Noriega of Houston against Republican Sen. John Cornyn by the same amount - with 13 percent undecided or committed to another candidate.

The survey results were compiled by Zogby International as early voting got under way for the Nov. 4 election.

Come on folks, give a large group of struggling Democratic activists in Texas a hand.  There is a group of us spanning the vast state of Texas that have been working day and night to send Rick to Washington. We're grassroots every day folks who have given as much as our little piggy banks hold. And our go to Big Dogs are maxed out.

We cannot take 6 more years of a right winger who serves as the puppet for the fat cats in big oil, big insurance, big banking and big everything with money.

And neither can you.

Why?

If elected John Cornyn will block every single thing a Democratic President and Congress will try to accomplish.  Mark my words, folks.   Corn Dog will rally any Republican buddies who are left in Congress to do likewise.  He will reach out to the right wing media to demonize the Democratic Administration.   And the right wing media, like FOX "News," will be more than happy to oblige.

Get it?  Even if you do not live in Texas John Cornyn will work against your best interests.

I have to admit I have been admiring Palin's taste in clothing, especially the red leather jacket she wore the other day. Thanks to recent news reports now I know why I've been paying attention to her wardrobe.  Palin's outfits have been created by the finest designers in the world of haute couture.  Sigh.  Guess I'd better forget about ever owning that red leather jacket unless I can find a knock off at Chico's.

Sarah sure has exquisite taste in clothes.  Price seems to be no limit when someone else is footing the bill.  And like "Joe the Plumber" who is not a plumber, Palin does not like to pay her fair share of taxes, either.

Another grim lesson I have learned from Republicans who are running for office is that when they demonize something or something or attack someone for doing something they should not be doing, chances are the Republican is doing the very thing they are hyperventilating about.

Lately Sarah Palin has been stomping across the so-called red parts of America in her $600 a pop high heels and $12,000. suits while attacking Barack Obama whom she calls a socialist b/c he wants to redistribute the wealth. Duh, isn't that what taxes are supposed to do?  Never mind.

According to Palin,  Obama wants to steal money from the small business owners like Joe the Plumber who is not a plumber, nor does he own a business, and give it to other Americans who are very likely fake or anti-American.

The truth of the matter is Sarah Palin is the real socialist. Aside from the $150K wardrobe handout, as the governor of oil rich Alaska Sarah taxes the oil companies and transfers the revenues to her and the people of Alaska.

The Houston Chronicle is hitting them out of the park.  For the first time since 1964, the newspaper supported a Democratic candidate for U.S. President.  On Sunday it endorsed Senator Barack Obama.

This morning I opened the newspaper and saw more great news.  This endorsement is no tentative, mild mannered one, either.   The Houston Chronicle wrote a glowing commentary about Rick Noriega, his background, his impeccable record and his distinguished accomplishments.

It will be especially important for Texans to have a strong, respected voice inside the expected Democratic majority in the Senate. Rick Noriega offers such a voice, with a distinctive Lone Star tone and perspective.

The Chronicle endorses Noriega for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Republican John Cornyn.

Noriega, a Houstonian, describes himself as a Texas Democrat. That term, once common currency in the state's political conversation, seems to have fallen out of favor over the past several Republican-dominated years. But it resonates once more in this season of voter discontent with partisanship uber alles. Some old-fashioned moderate bipartisanship, Texas style, should be much welcomed in the Washington debate, particularly on overheated topics such as energy and immigration. Rick Noriega can provide it.

This has been a very long election cycle that started almost two years ago.  As an outside observer, while cruising alongside this very long and winding road in politics, I have to say I have learned an awful lot about so many things.  I have seen inspirational and electrifying candidates and I have witnessed some mighty disingenious and dishonest ones.

The political pundits informed me about their notions of political history and demographics.  I did not know another state of Alabama existed between Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania.  Nor did I know New Hampshire is the Alabama of New England. I think it was Joe Scarborough who informed me about the coastal regions of Alabama, Mississippi and some of northwestern Florida. This area is known as The Redneck Riviera.

I had to scratch my head a few times when Chris Matthews and Pat Buchanan would refer to  working class "ethnic whites" in the northeastern U.S.  Then my memory took me back to a 1970's sitcom called All in the Family whose central character was Archie Bunker, a bigoted white working class guy who lived in Queens, NY.  Archie must be the guy they are talking about, I thought.  Archie referred to his fictional Polish-American son-in-law as "Meat Head" and "Pollock." He had other choice names for his daughter and son-in-law's ethnically and/or racially mixed friends as well. The creator of All in the Family had intended for the show to be a comical satire but this was lost on much of the viewing public.

I never knew a place like Wasilla existed nor did I know there is fringe political independent parties scattered across the U.S. from Wasilla, Alaska to Georgia (that would be U.S. Georgia) that want to secede from the U.S.

I learned a lot about narratives, closing the deal, pie, orange juice, coffee, hair styles, make up, gender, age, one's disposition, mavericks, mavericky, SNL, non-mavericks, a family in Texas who are the true Mavericks, Joe Six Pack and Joe the plumber who is worried about the 250K he saved to buy his boss's plumbing company.  Since I have a brother-in-law in Ohio who is a plumber I called him to ask if he had socked away 250K in his piggy bank. Karl the real plumber in Ohio asked me if I was on drugs. Next I learned that Joe is not a plumber and Joe's first name is Sam. I also learned that there is a pastor in Alaska who will perform witch exorcisms. I learned the straight talk express alternates between a virtual hate talk express and/or lying express, depending upon on McCain's polling numbers and his and his campaign mangers' mood swings or the media spin cycles.

There's More... :: (0 Comments, 1503 words in story)

John McCain and Sarah Palin can't talk about the economy and so their campaign has descended into one of the lowest rings in hell.  Indeed, their campaign has sunk to such a degree that it would be laughable were it not so dangerous and downright un-patriotic.

Sarah Palin, McCain's attack wolf, has been on the campaign stump trying real, real hard to paint Senator Obama as a terrorist by association. Sarah-the-heels-are-on-and-gloves-are-off Palin obviously didn't realize when she arrived in national politics that everything she says will actually be fact checked by the media and others. And because heaven help us Palin is on the ticket for the highest offices in the land, journalists are also doing their own vetting of Sarah Palin, something John McCain obviously did not bother to do.

If Obama is guilty by association b/c he knows someone who participated in domestic terrorism when Obama was eight years old, what does that make Sarah Palin whose husband was, until very recently, a member of the Alaska Independent Party?  The extremist Party wants to secede from the U.S. and its leader said he hated America and its flag.  Sarah Palin apparently approves his message b/c she addressed the Party's Convention in 2008.

Keating Economics

by: Libby Shaw

Mon Oct 06, 2008 at 04:26 PM CDT

John McCain is no maverick. He is a typical corrupt Republican lawmaker.  See his role in the making of a financial crisis - The Keating Five scandal.  McCain knew enough about economics to make a lot of money for himself back in those days.

By the way, Lehman Bros. execs got their golden parachutes while they were begging the Feds (us) to bail them out.  The fat cats will always take care of themselves first.

So will corrupted Republican lawmakers like McCain. The American people are sold out in the process and left holding the stinking and empty bag.

Rick Noriega: A New Deal for Texas

by: Libby Shaw

Sat Oct 04, 2008 at 11:40 PM CDT

Texans need a new deal and Rick Noriega is the man to deliver it. I very recently posted a diary here about John Cornyn and the raw and rotten deals he has dealt to the people of Texas.  Meanwhile, back in Washington the Senator has bent over backwards to bail out his fat cat buddies on Wall St.

We need a breath of fresh air, a new face and someone with a proven track record of integrity.  One who will stand up for the people of Texas for a change. Rick Noriega is the man who has the character and moral fiber to work for everyday Texans. He has walked the walk in Austin as a lawmaker and in Houston while working with Mayor Bill White in planning and executing the Hurricane Katrina rescue efforts. Noriega went the extra mile, too, when serving in Afghanistan.

Enough of John Cornyn and all the Republicans who mislead us with their talking points and mendacious spin.  What these boys and girls say in Texas has very little in common with how they will vote in Washington.

Check out Rick Noriega and see the difference.

Senator Cornyn's Raw Deals for Texans

by: Libby Shaw

Fri Oct 03, 2008 at 04:37 PM CDT

( - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

This diary is an expanded and updated re-post of one I wrote previously on Texas Kaos.  This updated version is also cross posted on Texas Kaos.

As predicted, John Cornyn voted for the Wall St. bailout the other night.  I never doubted for a moment that John Cornyn would ever in a day let down his buddies the fat cats. After all, the Republicans enabled Wall Street's financial melt down by voting for deregulation and lifting all "shackles," as they would call it, from their beloved soul mates on Wall Street.

Deregulate, Baby, Deregulate.

And boy did they ever do that big time.

Republicans dumbly believed Wall St. would police itself. Indeed, this is what a recently retired professor at the London School of Economics has to say about the U.S. financial melt down:

Today is my son's birthday. He is working for the Obama campaign as a field organizer in southwestern Va. This diary is written in honor of his birthday and for his hard work on the campaign trail.

What is it about Republicans and their knack for choosing unqualified and bungling candidates on  the top or bottom of their tickets?

It appears that 2008 is no different from 2004 in terms of choices where the worst of the worse of Republican candidates are concerned.  History will prove, in no uncertain terms, that W. is the worst president in recent times.  His ratings are plummeting downward, especially since the financial melt down on Wall St. Whether Republicans care to admit it or not the GOP delivered three extraordinary calamities since 2000: 9/11, Iraq and the Wall Street crash of September 29, 2008.

Is John McCain really a different kind of Republican?  Let's hear what CNN's Jack Cafferty has to say about McCain and the current financial disaster on Wall St.
