elie-0722-180.jpgMan guilty in false imprisonment of Elie Wiesel

Wiesel, well known for his memoir on the Holocaust, was 15 years old when his Jewish family was deported by the Nazis to the Auschwitz concentration camp. He lost his parents and younger sister in the Holocaust.

You have referred Elie as a male. Elie is a female.

Doing the math

Posted by: The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly Editor

amylin-160.gifAmylin posts wider second-quarter net loss

Revenue rose nearly 13 percent to $222 million, beating the analysts’ target of $224.3 million. Net sales of diabetes drug Byetta, which Amylin co-markets with Eli Lilly and Co, rose 17 percent to $177.5 million

If the analysts expected $224.3 million in revenue and amylin delivered $222 million, how did amylin “beat the estimates”?

obama-mess-200.jpgADVISORY: Baghdad story on views on Obama is withdrawn
Sun Jul 20, 2008 6:40am EDT

The BAGHDAD item headlined “Iraqis say they like Obama, divided on his policies” is withdrawn. The story was transmitted in error.

What was the error that prompted the withdrawal of the article dealing with Iraqi’s views of Obama?

David

The story shouldn’t have moved until Senator Obama got to Iraq.  We later issued it at the appropriate time: GBU Editor

Montreux lets the Good Times Roll with Quincy Jones

quincy-jones-180.jpgHe is best known as the producer of the album Thriller by icon Michael Jackson, and as the producer and conductor of “We Are The World”, the 1985 hit single written by Jackson and Lionel Hampton that raised money for Ethiopian famine relief.

Your story credits Michael Jackson and Lionel Hampton with the writing of the song “We are the World” It was Lionel Ritchie not Lionel Hampton who worked with M Jackson on WATW - produced by Quincy Jones.

Afghan attack blamed on shortfalls in aid

afghan-200.jpgLast month in Paris, donors led by the United States pledged about $20 million in aid to Afghanistan, but many supporters there voiced complaints about corruption and inefficiency in Karzai’s government.

In this piece, it stated the amount pledge to Afghansitan is $20 million when, in fact, the actual amount was more than $20 billion.

Sheets and Lee named starting pitchers for All-Star Game

brewers-180.jpgNEW YORK (Reuters) - Indians left-hander Cliff Lee was picked as the American League’s starting pitcher, while Milwaukee Braves’ Ben Sheets was handed National League honors for Tuesday’s All-Star Game, their managers announced on Monday.

Braves haven’t been based in Milwaukee since 1966! The correct team is the Brewers. C’mon sports writers/editors!

They’re not borrowers…

IndyMac borrowers line up in California to withdraw their cash

indymac-180.jpgYour headline is inaccurate. These customers are not “borrowers”- they are “depositors” who are trying to withdraw their funds held in deposit accounts.

New Hunter S. Thompson film focuses on writings

hunter-160.jpgThe documentary examines Thompson’s works, including his first piece for Rolling Stone magazine about the Hells Angels motorcycle club and his books “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas ” and “Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail.”

I’m pretty sure it was for the National Observer, and it subsequently came out in book form (1967). But it very definitely was not for Rolling Stone.

Apparently it was actually for The Nation. We corrected: GBU Editor

U.S., Czech missile deal prompts Moscow warning

map-220.jpgPRAGUE (Reuters) - The United States signed a pact on Tuesday to build part of a U.S. missile defense shield in the Czech Republic, prompting neighboring Russia to warn it will react with military means if the shield is deployed.

You referred to Russia as “neighboring ” to the Czech Republic. When I am looking at the map of Europe, I see half a dozen countries and thousand kilometers between Russia and the Czech Republic. It is closer from Prague to London then Moscow - I am missing something?

Helmer Fudd?

Posted by: The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly Editor

Jack Black parts ways with “Man-Witch”

jack220.jpgSources said that the decision this week to part ways may have originated from Black’s camp, which had questions about Phillips’ commitment to direct the picture before “Hangover,” another comedy said to be close to the helmer’s heart.

Your review uses a word I have never heard or cannot find looking in dictionaries on the web anywhere. What the hell is a helmer?

Jim K.

This was a Hollywood Reporter story issued with a Reuters news product. A helmer is a director. We normally try to keep insider words like that out of our stories: GBU Editor
