The Note: Foreign Trip Taking Shape for Obama

July 17, 2008 8:26 AM

ABC News' Rick Klein Reports in Thursday's Note: You know it’s summer when . . .

The most interesting thing Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has done lately is get a haircut (yes, we know, she’s moving from left to right) . . .

While the most interesting part of an Obama event is that he shared it with two people on the long short list.

Team McCain casts Sen. Barack Obama as President Bush on foreign policy (no, really) . . .

While Sen. John McCain himself praises Obama (seriously).

McCain aides are tussling with reporters over camera shots . . .

But somehow not acting to can another rogue surrogate (when will Team McCain learn the technological wonder that is Google?).

And the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s mouth . . .

Is causing as much trouble as Sen. Elizabeth Dole’s brain.

A great day, all in all, to put out some pretty good fundraising news: Obama raised $52 million in June, his campaign announced Thursday morning -- a number that should quiet questions about whether rejecting public financing was a good idea, at least for the time being. (It was announced, naturally, as part of a fundraising appeal.)

For the scorekeepers among us -- per ABC’s Jake Tapper, this far exceeds Obama’s $22 million May -- as well as McCain’s personal record of $22 million in June, not to mention previous reporting that put Obama’s June in the $30 million range.

It also approaches the $55 million Obama raised in February -- but doesn’t come close to the $100 million at least one Obama fundraiser was predicting. Given that this was the first (almost) full month that he had the nomination, was a record month impossible?

(And we’ll need the actual report to see the burn rate, and to count the big Clinton names. . . .)

Money aside, what’s happening in this slow summer stretch really does matter in a big way. By controlling the direction of the race’s discussion, every day that goes by allows Obama, D-Ill., to answer some of the questions that surround his candidacy for himself.

of course charlie gibson and katie and brian are going with obama on his trip. iwould say that you are going to be speaking into his earpiece on what to say, but the news media who reported that the bush admin was following the messiahs lead on talking face to face with iran does not know what when on to bring about this change. well, maybe i can guess. is it the case that we have an oil crisis which nancy pelosi, her majesty will not even debate with any intelligence? could it be that anyone who knows anything about what is going on in iran will say that iran is in a deep ecnomic recession and that the population in iran is very young and does not want the government telling them what to do.

Shows what kind of agenda WSJ has for leaking those artificially low numbers.

Can big bucks buy the election and over turn the will of the people?

The image of Obama standing next to other world leaders should be an interesting contrast from the one of McCain's tired old man. And patty, I'd worry less about the media "speaking into his earpiece" about "what when on" then lieberman and McCain aides required to tell McCain what day it is and country he's in.

You neglected to say WHY we should vote for McCain. Can you give us a reason? BTW, it is widely accepted that John McCain has received pass after pass for his multiple flipflops since the campaign began.
What "ties to terrorists" are you referring to?

You need to get past that hate. Very unattractive.

This foreign trip really can't be just a fact finding trip to Iraq and Afghanistan, can it? It has to be a big hoopla circus to show pomp and circumstance with Obama trying to look Presidential. Is this what all of the complaining about the long primary was about? They said Hillary should get out so that Obama would have time to "pivot" and get ready for the campaign against McCain? How long has it been, and what has Obama been doing? H***, he can't even debate McCain in a one on one in a town hall event!

It really is about being able to "pivot", isn't it? First this direction, then the other direction. Pivot--in basketball, you quickly "turn" and take the ball to the opposite court. This is so rediculously funny! How many days of this can we take? Oh, I forgot, the MSM will be "dramatizing" Obama's foreign visits. He needs experience, you know.

Actually Mary we are hoping that the "big bucks" being supplied BY the people will have an affect on this election.

They have never vetted Obama, even though it is their job to do so. They did not tell about his ties to terrorists and anti-Americans until AFTER half of America had voted.

Futhermore, their fawning over him in the Middle East will give aid and comfort to the enemy.

Get angry — Cry Treason!

GOD BLESS AMERICA.

VOTE FOR JOHN McCAIN IN 2008.

I can see that the dumbing down of AMerica has been an outstanding success.

It’s about Obama’s handlers wanting to control and change our CULTURE!

The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and the “57 ISLAMIC STATES†hold $$$ and power.

Obama is just their pawn --- for now

Better keep those blankets pulled up over your head, otherwise the boogey man could get you! BOO!
