Keep in mind - this is raw footage (not RAW) from both Canon XH A1 camcorder - and a few clips for the Canon EOS 5D MKII - you’ll see that the two are toe to toe (not really) on bright scenes… but in low light - NO COMPARISON… so I’m not sure of how Canon feels about my trashing their top of the line XH A1 camcorder… but common sense leads me to state the following: Â if the Canon still camera team and the video team have come together to produce the Canon EOS 5D MKII - the next HD camcorder they come out with - may just floor us all… Â these are very exciting times - to be someone who focuses on “creating” as opposed to the “process” and “technique” of making your vision match the “reality” of the tools you have at your disposal. It seems my (oldish) computer is freaking out big time trying to play the film, any chance Canon (or Smugmug)can also host a smaller version? The “behind the scenes” video works fine and I could enjoy the (short!) 5D2 clips it featured.

The scene where you had the 5DII suction cupped to the outside of the SUV (to get the skid shot) is awesome. Looking at how grainy that scene is (shot on the XH-A1) vs how clean the results from the 5DII are - man, night and day difference.

I think you’ve created something ground-breaking with the advent of video in dSLR and will go down as being one of those who’ve shaken things up.
Also, being a longtime user of Smugmug (pro acct), it’s fantastic to see them be so generous in their support.
It’s photographers, companies, and groups such as these that have participated in your project that push the boundaries and make us all more inspired to learn, develop, and further our skills.
I believe many of us would love to see more of the technical side of things in future endeavors you may pursue (similar to what Chase Jarvis has been doing).

Andy, go to the dpreview.com forums. A lot of help there for your questions.
btw… this camera is second to only the canon 1ds series, the highest camera line in canon and it doesn’t have video yet.
Also, teh body is just the initial investiment, you will soon learn about L lens which are not cheap at all, atleast over 1K for the cheapest L.

Comment by citidon 09.23.08 @ 9:45 amFor those of you who haven’t read Vincent’s article, “The Cloud is Falling,” do it now. What you’re witnessing with the 5D MkII videos is a perfect and direct example of what Vincent addresses in his writing. *Any* of you could have put this production together and generated this amount of publicity. True, not everyone has access to pre-production equipment (and as a Canon ambassador, Vincent is paid to represent Canon), but the idea is the same- use the tools you have available to create your own media, reach new audiences and perhaps reach new markets for your work.

I really enjoyed this piece and do think it’s just the opening salvo in things to come including a camcorder form factor camera that takes Canon 35mm glass.
I have preordered my 5D MKII.
After reading your blog, the comments, and watching the film and behind the scenes a few times I am wondering what a more realistic budget was.
I know you only layed out $5k USD (2k for da choppa) but if you calculated how much it was to rent all the gear you used I wonder how much more that figure would really be?
Certainly to own it would be huge. 50-100K? maybe?
I do think you can shoot a great movie for somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-10k with the 5D MKII!

Yes. You could use any digital camera. Take huge photos. Just think about the frame rate you want to use, and take that many photos for every second. Meaning, if you want 24fps, take 24 photos for every second of your film. Bring those stills into Final cut (or something similar) and have fun.
