Christian Phillips, 18 years old, is suspected of delivering baskets LSD-laced cookies to about a dozen police departments in Texas. “Our officers took a good whiff and thought they smelled like marijuana,†McGuire said, adding that preliminary tests instead detected traces of LSD. In Fort Worth, at least three officers got sick after eating some cookies and candy from a basket delivered to that police station Monday night, authorities said. Investigators found that Phillips had a list of about two dozen police departments in north Texas, with 13 checked off!

You know ABC fucked up when the crowd actually and loudly booed Gibson. You know they blew it when Obama is asked about some badass he knew when he was 8 years-old. You know it was awful when Editor & Publisher’s Editor Greg Mitchell calls it “perhaps the most embarrassing performance by the media in a major presidential debate in years.” You know it was bad when one of the many gotcha questions is supplied by Sean Hannity and NY right wing radio looney Steve Malzberg. You know it was terrible when Philly’s Daily News’ Will Bunch rips it not once but twice. You know it went well past weak when the “flag pin” kerfuffle and every other kerfuffle is resurrected. You know it was ugly when it took an absolutely unforgivable 51 fucking minutes for the motherf***ers moderators to bring up one policy issue(!?!). You know it was shameful when Keith Olbermann sez “The campaign may have seemed dirty. It had nothing on one of the moderators of the debate tonight.”

Several strains of bacteria in the soil can make a meal of the world’s most potent antibiotics, researchers said on Thursday, in a startling finding that illustrates the extent to which these germ-fighting drugs are losing the war against superbugs.

A study of soil microbes taken from 11 sites uncovered bacteria that could withstand antibiotics 50 times stronger than the standard for bacterial resistance.”It certainly was very surprising to us,” said George Church, a geneticist at Harvard Medical School in Boston, whose research appears in the journal Science.

They were “surprised” ?? Try to stop using antibiotic soap and stuff.

I wrote this a while ago and never published it because I wanted to make it one of those fancy three part blog posts. I think there’s a lot of power in realizing when you are never going to do something and just letting it go.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture yesterday asked U.S. farmers to keep their cloned animals off the market indefinitely even as Food and Drug Administration officials announced that food from cloned livestock is safe to eat. Bruce I. Knight, the USDA’s undersecretary for marketing and regulatory programs, requested an ongoing “voluntary moratorium” to buy time for “an acceptance process” that Knight said consumers in the United States and abroad will need, “given the emotional nature of this issue.”

Yet even as the two agencies sought a unified message — that food from clones is safe for people but perhaps dangerous to U.S. markets and trade relations — evidence surfaced suggesting that Americans and others are probably already eating meat from the offspring of clones. Executives from the nation’s major cattle cloning companies conceded yesterday that they have not been able to keep track of how many offspring of clones have entered the food supply, despite a years-old request by the FDA to keep them off the market pending completion of the agency’s safety report.

FDA: Hey, did you write down that stuff about about the experimental untested food like I asked?
Beef Industry: ohhh duuuuude, I totally forgot. My bad!

Now! from the people who brought you mad cow disease, CLONED MEAT!!!

You seriously have to read this whole article, it’s a fucking riot.
USDA Recommends Food From Clones Stay Off the Market

My favorite part is when the cattle/biotech companies are all “Cloning is just a way to make offspring” it’s like invitro fertilization. wtf, no seriously WTF!?!? Although maybe my favorite part is when the article talks about how the few clones that do survive are plagued with birth defects and abnormally high rates of disease but don’t worry, it’s safe to eat! And besides, we can’t label it because that would just keep people from buying it.

While the future is bright and shiny, it’s just as corrupt on the inside.

A couple days ago the USDA issued the biggest beef recall in history, 143 million pounds. I’ve seen several articles on this and most of them gloss over a few salient points that I’d like to reiterate here

-This recall goes back two years. Wait, seriously? Yes, that is physically impossible and I’m concerned that there is no one in the media rational enough to collapse in ridicule.

-A two year recall means that most of this meat has already been consumed.

-Downed cattle requirements are in place because of mad cow disease. My understanding is that these regulations as they (ahem) stand right now are seriously inadequate. Also, mad cow disease is seriously under reported because there are strong disincentives for telling the truth.

-Almost universally the articles that I’ve seen completely fail to critically engage the beef industry’s claims about the safety of the food supply. I’ll try my best to paraphrase

Beef Industry: “The government forced us to recall an insanely large amount of meat because it’s been unsafe for two years. We didn’t notice that but trust us, eating meat is 100% safe.”
Journalists: “okay, well, we’ll just repeat your logically incoherent soundbite ad nauseum so that people don’t accidentally get really pissed off about how incompetent and greedy you are.”

-This is a recall spurred on by a video recorded secretly and delivered to the humane society. This didn’t come out because of vigilant regulators. I highly recommend watching the video.

This video is really worth watching, ESPECIALLY the last 5 seconds. But really the best part is what happened to him afterwards.

A police officer shown on a YouTube video berating and roughly handling a skateboarder at the Inner Harbor was suspended on Monday. The incident involving Officer Salvatore Rivieri, a 17-year-old veteran, is the subject of an internal affairs investigation, said Sterling Clifford, a spokesman for the Baltimore Police Department and the mayor’s office.
“The entire incident raised red flags for all of the members of the command staff who watched the video,” Clifford told The (Baltimore) Sun.

I’d like to start by giving the Associate Press the Shitty Journalism award for failing to mention how long this guy was suspended for. This is buttressed by describing the situation as “berating” a 14 year old. What about ranting wildly? or flying off the handle? could we please get an accurate descriptor here?

It’s too bad the video had to go to youtube instead of directly to the police station. Whenever possible I think police officers should be videotaped. My experience is that about half of them behave like this guy. Also, cell phones should be able to automatically upload video to youtube.

The comments on youtube are also fascinating

-”The kid obviously didn’t show any respect to the officer and deserved to get pushed around”
-”punk ass kids talking to him like their equals.”
-”its unfortunate that the cop pushed the kid when he tried to get up because everything he said to that idoit kid was completely right.”

I’m not really clear on why people think that police officers automatically ought to be treated with the utmost deference. It’s probably a good idea since they have guns and are generally incompetent, angry and stupid. That just means you should avoid them at all costs and massage their egos when you do come into contact with them.

-No one got slammed, he was forced to the ground and by police standards he was pretty gentle about it. He was well within his rights as a Police Officer to confiscate the skateboard, and when he resisted, that’s when it got physical. So there is the threat and use of force, the officer was fully justified and showed restraint when he really didn’t have to.

The cop didn’t say that he was going to confiscate the skateboard, he just walked up and assaulted the kid. Resistance would be based on the kid knowing what the cop wanted to do by perhaps reading his mind or something and then trying to avoid it.

Anyway, this is insane and I’m really glad that the cop got suspended. Record cops whenever possible and upload it to youtube.

Two police officers pleaded guilty Thursday to manslaughter in the shooting death of a 92-year-old woman during a botched drug raid last fall. A third officer still faces charges.[..]
The charges followed a Nov. 21 “no-knock” drug raid on the home of Kathryn Johnston, 92. An informant had described buying drugs from a dealer there, police said. When the officers burst in without warning, Johnston fired at them, and they fired back, killing her.
Fulton County prosecutor Peter Johnson said that the officers involved in Johnston’s death fired 39 shots, striking her five or six times, including a fatal blow to the chest.
He said Johnston fired only once through her door and didn’t hit any of the officers. That means the officers who were wounded likely were hit by their own colleagues, he said.[..]
Assistant U.S. Attorney Yonette Sam-Buchanan said Thursday that although the officers found no drugs in Johnston’s home, Smith planted three bags of marijuana in the home as part of a cover story.

This part of the article has spawned a new category, Shitty Journalism Award.

The case raised serious questions about no-knock warrants and whether the officers followed proper procedures.

WHAT THE FUCK?!??! Shooting eachother while murdering someones great grandmother raises “serious questions” about following the proper fucking procedure?? Is there something in the goddamn manual about protocol for planting drugs?

Shitty Journalism Award just doesn’t do this justice, anyone out there have some ideas?
