Pandora on the iPhone
This is a really exciting day for us -- after many months of effort we're finally able to deliver what may be the best form of Pandora yet... Pandora for the iPhone.

Our iPhone application gives you the full Pandora experience -- create and listen to up to 100 stations, rate songs, bookmark, even buy tracks from the iTunes store right on the phone. The application works over EDGE, 3G, and WiFi, is integrated with your Pandora.com account, and best of all it's completely free.
So hop on over to the iPhone App Store, download the Pandora app, unplug, and take Pandora with you everywhere you go -- in the car, on a run, in the park. Everywhere.
You can find screenshots, a video demo, and a link to get started here: http://pandora.com/on-the-iphone.
Update: : We've been getting all kinds of inquiries about our plans to support a huge variety of other phones: Blackberries, Windows Mobile, Symbian / S60, Instinct, Sidekick. As you may know, we've been working on our mobile offering for about 18 months and in that time we've brought Pandora to almost 50 different phones. It pains us to not have been able to get a version out for every handset and every operating system yet, but rest assured that we are committed to bringing the Pandora experience to an ever broadening range of phones. Thanks for your patience as we do our best to prioritize and get Pandora running across the entire mobile ecosystem.

Congrats. Maybe Pandora will be the killer app for the iPhone. My first thought was that I need to investigate the phone plans to see how continually streaming music will or won't chew up minutes on the plan.

Ahhh!!! Holy smokes, I listened to Pandora on my iPhone during my morning walk to the station this morning, and it was fantastic. :) I got so warm and fuzzy inside, and as a new song started playing, I thought, "Pandora knows me SO WELL! Awesome song! Thumb up!" I think I was carried away by the elation of having Pandora on my phone, though, because on reflection, the song was actually just kind of meh. Still, good times, good times! :) My only sadness comes from the fact that the application has to be open to work. No listening to Pandora while reading email or browsing the web... but I'll take what I can get!

This is so great - I've been wanting something like this on my iPhone from the beginning, and now I don't have to be jealous of all the other phone users that were able to use Pandora.
Posted by: jamie at July 11, 2008 06:28 AM
I remember from the AT&T announcement the bitrate for the Mobile Pandora was around 30 kbps. Is that the case for the iPhone version?
also, Pandora on Wii please :)
Keep up the great work!

hey...
think you'll ever start having music from other languages on here?
Posted by: kaichi at July 11, 2008 08:28 AM
I'm so excited about this...this rocks! Can't wait to try it out.
Posted by: Hrag at July 11, 2008 08:31 AM
A person knows what type of music he or she likes but doesn't always know what or who to listen to. With other estations you type in the music you like they seem to play the same crap or or songs that aren't what we want to hear. Somehow Pandora did it, everything we listeners love, alittle old with the new but all the music we can groove to. Who needs a DJ when you have Pandora Radio. Keep up the Great work.

Tried the App on a friends phone today. Wow!! I can't wait to get it running on my Touch.
One very important question, though: How do I remove my account login info from my friend's phone now??????????
Posted by: Brad at July 11, 2008 09:32 AM
This really is exciting! I know it says it works for the iPod touch, has anyone tried it?? It makes sense that it would. But I can't wait to go home and find out! Otherwise my next phone might be an iPhone, Pandora sold me!
Keep up the awesome work!! Pandora is amazing!
Posted by: yesenia at July 11, 2008 10:08 AM
Why is it not available in all countries app store ?
Posted by: Kaare at July 11, 2008 10:54 AM
Hey Pandora folks - this is an awesome app! Unfortunately, it's hampered slightly by the fact that it can't run in the background while I'm doing other things on the phone. Any plans/ideas on working around that? Otherwise, brilliant, brilliant app!
Posted by: kyle at July 11, 2008 11:07 AM
Functionality of this app is great, little need to load my iPhone up with music now! One UI nitpick... you used the list icon for the button at top right of the playing song screen. I expected to see a list view of the playlist and instead I got some (rather useless) informational text. Maybe its a placeholder for v1.0? If not I would suggest using an info icon not the list view icon. Other than that, awesome stuff.

I'm trying out Pandora for the first time today on my iPhone... absolutely awesome! Thanks so much for such an amazing app.

This is probably one of the best applications on the 2.0 platform to date. Sure, Super Turbo Monkey Ball is a marvel of what you can do with the platform, but now I can take my Pandora music anywhere (even on the EDGE network)
Posted by: Scott at July 11, 2008 11:45 AM
Great work, this is the best service ever.
Please don't forget about Verizon and Xbox.
Posted by: Ken at July 11, 2008 12:12 PM
So you guys bothered developing for a completely new platform while other platforms like Windows Mobile and Palm OS that's been around for so long are left in the dust?
That's great.
Posted by: Ali Scissons at July 11, 2008 12:14 PM
This rocks. You are fools for not charging for this. I think almost all of your users would gladly pay for this!
Posted by: b at July 11, 2008 12:32 PM
I'm kinda ticked off about this guys. I've been a pandora fan since the very first day, and a windows mobile user this whole time too. People have been asking for windows mobile pandora for YEARS, with no response, but the iphone comes out and POOF pandora. Not cool guys.
Did you know that people actually hack the roms of their windows mobile phones so they can listen to pandora? This is a serious market, why are you blowing us off? Is it because we aren't cool or trendy enough?
Posted by: neuman at July 11, 2008 01:38 PM
makes me want to buy an iphone but i can't fork over $2400 for a decent 2 year mobile plan, plus sprint isn't my area. ok now the ipod touch is looking very tempting but limited to wifi.... damn it pandora give us your own portable like slacker.com!!!!! - congrats on the new service.

Posted by: Machiventa at July 11, 2008 03:01 PM
Pandora+iPhone=Perfect!
The one problem I have always had with iPods is that you never get music you don't already know about. Problem solved!
Already Pandora is getting better at what I like.
Ahhhhhhhh "technophoria"
Posted by: Victor Venters at July 11, 2008 03:43 PM
I just discovered Pandora via the iPhone app, and it's incredible. One comment - on EDGE, there's a 5-10s delay between tracks, the program needs to buffer the next track while playing the current one!
Posted by: Ian C. at July 11, 2008 04:19 PM
b is bummed that Pandora didn't write it's app for Windows Mobile. Perhaps it was just so damn easy with the iPhone 2 Software SDK (I read somewhere that Pandora coders said it was even easier than their own platform).
And Victor, the buffer on Edge is a limitation at this time. Please don't complain about free music. Ever. ;-)
cheers.
Posted by: jjjj at July 11, 2008 05:27 PM
It was me, not Victor, that commented on EDGE ... and I'll happily pay the subscription price for Pandora.
Posted by: Ian C. at July 11, 2008 06:27 PM
I've had the Original iPhone since the day it came out, and since the 2.0 update, I've gotten dozens of new apps. Pandora is the one of the top 5 must have applications.
It's obvious MAJOR flaw, is that it must be opened to listen to music. Meaning no multi-task browsing, SMS, etc. while listening. I hope that is resolved soon.
Aside from that, the ease of use and interface is great. Its simple to make stations, and gets music quickly. Even with only the EDGE network, getting music is fairly fast, compared to Wi-Fi. Plus if you hear a song you like, you can buy it off iTunes... convenient for Apple (or you can downloaded from whatever free program most of the world uses).
And best part... it's all free.
Posted by: David R at July 11, 2008 06:56 PM
Oh, Pandora.
You struck gold on doing this for the iPhone!
I am not planning to the get the iPhone 3G. I love my 1st gen iPhone and I love the app for it!
Now, I am seriously thinking of getting the 2.0 for my iPhone Touch!
Keep up the great job, guys!!

OMG, I am a long-time Pandora heavy user, and I am about to burst having Pandora on my iPhone. It is the highlight of many past months for me! Thanks, Pandora! Much love to you!
Posted by: Stan at July 11, 2008 10:22 PM
Thank you so much for this - it runs rather well except that you can't adjust the volume slider unless the music is paused (but you can by using the volume buttons on the side so no big deal).
I only wish Apple let this app run in the background. Maybe Pandora could set up a memory so it doesn't reset every time something happens that would move it to the background?

Posted by: Lynne Cohen at July 12, 2008 02:16 PM
Thanks for all the nice comments guys!
Lynn - You can delete a station by swiping left to right over the station name, while on the station list screen. Then you will have the option to delete it! Hope that helps!

I've always loved Pandora, but I rarely have a chance to listen to music tied to my computer. This application has completely changed the way I use my iPhone -- I listen to music on my iPhone constantly, but sometimes the responsibility of being the DJ is overwhelming. This weekend has been such an incredible experience -- I forgot how genius Pandora is. Keep up the good work.
My primary suggestion, of course, would be to add the ability to work in other applications while Pandora plays in the background, just as the iPod application does. I suspect there are restrictions for the third party applications that run on the iPhone, but this is what will really make or break the deal -- I'm now irritated when I get a text or call because it interrupts the music and that kinda defeats the purpose of having an iPhone.

Some feedback that would be nice for Pandora on the iphone would be.... as soon as you move to the home button keep playing the music you want instead of closing out and stopping the music.. something like the ipod button does if you move to do something else.

I know the iPhone is popular but so are other phones. I have had my BlackJackII now for a few months and have been waiting a long time to get pandora on it (BJ1 is already supported). Please work on adding more phones to the mix.
Posted by: Adam Gunderson at July 14, 2008 10:37 AM
I really like the app but I have two minor problems with it that nobody seems to mention. I'll be playing one of my stations (at home over Wi-fi) and it'll just cut off a song and start playing a new one without me hitting thumbs-down or skip. So I end up getting the first 30 seconds or so of a song and then getting the first 30 second of another one. It doesn't seem to happen with songs by artists I've already thumbs-upped, but that's just a guess; I haven't tested that hypothesis extensively.
Any known cure for this?
Also, if I start listening at home over Wi-fi then walk to the store, my iPhone has to switch to EDGE but Pandora doesn't seem to make the jump with it and I have to hold "Home" down to restart the app.
Am I the ONLY ONE having any sort of technical problems? I haven't seen anyone else mention either of these.
Don't take this as griping -- I like Pandora very much and the app has a lot of potential, but as it is I almost can't listen, mostly because of the song-skipping thing.

Posted by: Rinnie at July 14, 2008 06:56 PM
Pandora staff - thank you so much for developing this application and for offering it for free! I have always said that the main thing missing from my iPhone was Flash so that I could listen to Pandora. Glad to see there was an alternative solution!
Thank you - thank you!
Posted by: urbanlanguage at July 14, 2008 10:44 PM
I don't own an IPhone or smartphone, so please excuse this noob question. But in order for Pandora to be running, wouldn't you need to be connected to some network the entire time?
Doesn't that A) get expensive and B) limit functionality via deadspots the same way cell phones and other devices are limited by them?
Posted by: byron at July 14, 2008 11:03 PM
this is a comment on the ad introducing the pandora app to the iPhone... The ad looks great and is very attractive ( at first ) but i noticed that the reflections of the text which reads "visit the advertiser showcase" & "experience the sound of music festival" at the bottom of the web app itself are OFF!!! noticeably!!! c'mon who's art directing over there..!
photoshop 101 - align tool or GUIDES!!!
p.s. I like your stuff... im not hating... im just saying "C'MON!!!"
Posted by: nick at July 15, 2008 05:54 AM
urbanlanguage - This is correct, since Pandora is a streaming app, you need to have a data connection. This can be any connection that your phone supports, Edge / Wifi / 3G.
Signal strength does make a difference, but many listeners have reported positive results even in the car! Try it out (it's free) and see what happens!
Posted by: Johnny - Pandora Listener Support at July 15, 2008 11:37 AM
For some reason my foreign-language titled stations (Greek, cryllic, and with umlauts...) don't display correctly. It would be great if this could be fixed!
Thanks; I love Pandora radio and appreciate all your hard work!

That is pretty cool that Pandora is on the iPhone, but what about all of us that have Windows Mobile through other providers. I walk/jog almost daily and would love to stream Pandora on my phone or even listen in my car. I read some other comments about this same issue. Why are we getting neglected?

Hi, I'm Darrell from Davenport,IA and even though I'm not into slang talk, which I'm not, I think your Pandora it great. Not cool because cool to me is a description of the temperature. And I have a wireless phone called TRACFONE which is said to be the #1 wireless phone in the country. It has been in my hands since back in the year 00. I still have it in 08. I enjoy Pandora very much at home on my computer. I got my TRACFONE at WALMART with no contract needed. And it really does work country wide round the clock. Thank you much. Darrell.

I really like the new iPhones app and the service in general; however, it would be nicer if the app displayed the rating on the thumb icons like the Flash UI does, rather than hiding it at the top.
Posted by: Colin Scroggins at July 15, 2008 06:16 PM
Tim,
Any chance that you can fix it so it streams in stereo? Listening over Wifi or Edge only delivers a mono stream... :-(
Also, what bit rate are you streaming at?
Cheers!

How about a Windows Mobile application? I've been waiting for years, and still, NADA.
Is it that hard to make a decent Pandora app for WinMo? I'm really surprised at the Pandora team. Did Apple pay you guys to make one for the iPhone? Because an official WinMo app. is better than nothing. Why not be platform friendly?
Pandora better make one sometime.

A couple of feature requests:
- I wish that the UI could tell me if I have already given a song thumbs up so I don't have do it again.
- When I hit the home button twice on my device, it brings up itunes control. If pandora is running, I really want the pandora controls to come up. This is when my phone is locked or on the home screen
- I really want Pandora for podcasts! This would be a great way to discover new ones online
- Give me a way on the iphone to suggest new artists for a station, and see a list of all the songs I have given thumbs up.
- Give me a link from a song to to buy it right in itunes

John -- upon further review, the app still cuts off songs -- even those that have been thumbs-upped. Very frustrating. So re-installing didn't help.
Sorry to mislead you with premature info.

Ali, neuman, Tracy, Jeff, Quikboy, CGS, avnish --
We hear you on the Windows Mobile front. Believe me our goal is to bring Pandora to as many phones as possible -- in fact we support almost 50 different phones right now. We love Windows Mobile every bit as much as that "other phone." The truth is that the Windows Mobile world is much more complicated than the iPhone -- tens of different handsets with different keyboards, screens, input types (some touch, some not), etc. That means it's not nearly as simple as creating a single application that will satisfy a large audience. That said, we're hard at work on it and hope to have some news on that front later this year.

this is the greatest invention in the app store currently. the true future of radio.
my only, ONLY, gripe. which is killing me right now as i am listening to it on my new iphone (=D), is it NEEDS to run in the background. its basically like an unlimited ipod. i know its not possible as of now, but i pray that you are in talks with apple to make this run in the background. it would be the most perfect application, and would single handedly sell the phone
Posted by: nick axel at July 20, 2008 11:54 AM
Excellent!!!
Please add following:
* Stereo Stream on WIFI/3G
* background play
* add more functions from the on-line version (history list, categories etc)
* add finger slide navigation:
slide up - add to bookmarks
slide right - next song
slide left - songs history or (my bookmarks)
slide down - why pandora chose this song
why does it freeze when I choose a station
(need to restart the 3g iphone)
Posted by: geo212 at July 20, 2008 03:34 PM
You need iPhone version 2.0 to download apps. plug your phone into your pc and at the sync screen. click, check for update
Posted by: Foxy at July 20, 2008 10:48 PM
I agree with Oliver's comment somewhere above.
I wish you could do other things while Pandora remained playing like the iPod feature on the iPhone. For example, when playing the iPod, you are able to browse to other menus (send a text message for example while your music plays), but unfortunately, the current Pandora app doesn't allow this. As soon as you navigate away from the app by pressing the home button, the music stops.
Other than that, kick ass app! I love it!!

Great job on the Pandora Radio app for iPhone!
I'm loving it. Introduced my dad to Pandora on a road trip last week and even made a station for him while we were on the drive home! :)
The one feature I miss from the web and AIR players is the ability to view the song history and vote on a song that is no longer playing.

Same thing happened to me. I held the virtual button down until the icons offered a delete button. I deleted the app. I downloaded fro itunes again. After a sync, it came back. It recognized me right away. I noticed that this happened after I downloaded other apps. It will not be suprised if I have to reload it again if I download other apps.

Can pandora work on the iPod Touch
Posted by: Hunter Wojohn at July 26, 2008 01:30 PM
I wish it would play in the background while I am using other apps?!?!?!?!

I think this is really fucking awesome. I got my iphone today and the first app I downloaded was Pandora. Pandora is absolutely insane. What a great thing to have on my iphone. Apple and Pandora have seriously outdid themselves on this one!
Thanks Apple & Pandora!

I love this application with one caveat. It sometimes stops playing a song in the middle and skips to the next song. There's got to be a way Pandora can fix this problem.
The selection of music based on my artist choices is incredible. Also how do you force a sync to changes made to a station on the website?

I love Pandora for iphone. Thank you!
Here are a couple things from my wish list:
+ When I press my headphone button I would like the music to pause like it does for itunes. Currently when I press my headphone button, Pandora stops and my itunes starts to play.
+ How about a Pandora "remote" control app for iphone? I feed my home audio from pc with Pandora and it would be great to glance at my iphone Pandora Remote, pause, and skip songs (like I can do now with Itunes and the new iphone Remote app and formerly with the little web app and service called "Signal".) Pandora Remote would be awesome!

so no one has answered the question on how to bloody logout on the iphone.
well?
Posted by: you at July 31, 2008 06:20 PM
oh hey, finally figured it out: apps like Pandora and AIM have to be changed via the iPhone's actual "setting" app.
You can change users there.

@jtv
Yes, we have now implemented station-and-song-resume with the 1.1 update. Thanks for the suggestion!
@hunter
Yes, the iPod Touch will run Pandora over WiFi.
@nick
@rizo
@chris
The inability to run in the background is imposed by Apple to preserve battery life. There certainly seems to be some popular support for them to change that requirement, though!
@joe
1.If you're on a WiFi network, see if using another network fixes the issue, or temporarily turn off WiFi in Settings to try 3G or EDGE. If you're already listening on 3G or EDGE (and WiFi is not an option), you're probably in an area of heavy network congestion or limited connectivity and you may want to try again from another location, or later in the day.
(I'll add this info to our FAQ, as well.)
2. Restarting the app refreshes station changes (as does reloading the main www.pandora.com browser window on the web).
@ironwolve
@you
Looks like @me beat me to answering your question-- just go to Settings, then scroll down to Pandora.
@me
Thanks for the assist! :)
@everyone
Thanks much for all the thoughtful suggestions and feedback. We weigh your input very carefully in planning our next moves. Thanks again for listening!

I'm using an iPhone in Japan and I ALWAYS get the message "can't sync your stations" and can't access Pandora. Is this because of the international licensing problem or because my login information is wrong, or something else?
Also, can I change the login information my phone uses?
Posted by: quequotion at August 2, 2008 01:03 AM
Great App. Lately, though I have the same problem of automatically skipping about 20 sec. into the song. This may be related to the 1.1 update as this did not happen when originally downloading Pandora after just getting my 3G iPhone.
Change of network yields same problem. Computers on the current network have no problems.
I've read several reports of this on Apple's support fourms as well so it doesn't seem to be an isolated issue.
Thanks!!

Hi quequotion -
Indeed, Pandora is currently only legal in the U.S. Sorry about that! We hope this changes soon.

amen up on Joe's comment re a remote for Pandora. My world would be complete.
Posted by: jason at August 6, 2008 08:21 PM
This makes me so very jealous. I have been craving pandora everywhere as it is basically the only thing I listen to. If only I had unlimited money so I could get an iphone with an unlimited data plan.
A suggestion for the less fortunate:
The ability to create Pandora station podcasts would be nice... Have it generate an hour or two long "show" so that I could download it to ipod classic and get the Pandora experience without requiring internet. There could even be a voice to announce the next song coming up since if it was a podcast it would probably just be one long file (with one name). I feel this probably has not been implemented because it would not be legal, but here's to hoping!

@ Fr3sh -
From main menu, go to Settings.
In Settings, scroll down to the Pandora icon and click.
You can change users from there.

"For the past 5 days, Every time I start the app it pauses for about 3 seconds and then crashes...What's up? I synced, updated, hard reset, and stil it crashes?"
I am having the same problem. I've had the phone for one day. Pandora was one of the first apps I downloaded. It worked well until earlier today when I had to reset the phone due to problems sending email. After the reset, I reloaded the pandora program from the apps store and now it simply will not run.
HELP!!!
Posted by: amstar at September 5, 2008 07:04 PM
Hi,
I just downloaded pandora on my ipod touch. I went into settings and entered in my username and password (which I had from using pandora on my PC)
Unfortunately, every time I tap the Pandora icon to load it up from the main menu, it loads up the Pandora main screen ("Radio from the music genome project") then it just goes right back to the main menu.
Am I missing something here? Any help would be great. I am located in the USA, and have tried it on 2 different wifi networks.
Posted by: mark at September 6, 2008 03:52 PM
I've got the same problem as mark, amstar, and CGS, and maybe some others that I miss. Clicking the Pandora icon brings up the app, it holds on a splash screen for a few seconds, then closes. uninstall/reinstall didn't help... and I'm really sad because Pandora is one of the reasons I got an iPhone.
Posted by: Dave at September 8, 2008 07:30 AM
Try rebooting the phone first, and see if that helps at all. If not, try deleting and reinstalling the Pandora iPhone app. Make sure to delete the app, then reboot the phone, and then reinstall it.
You can delete apps by going to the Home screen on the iPhone, then touching and holding until the icons start wiggling around. Then touch the X on the Pandora app to delete it. Try reinstalling it from the app store and see if that helps at all.
If this does not help, please write us at pandora-support@pandora.com and we're happy to help further.

Not sure what rock I've been hiding under, but I never even heard of Pandora until the iPhone app came out. Now it is my absolute favorite app & service. (Note to Blackberry/WM6 users: I am a perfect marketing example of why they focused first on the iPhone. :)
I am anti-DRM and boycott the Apple Store, so Bookmarks are awesome! The when-available alternative link to Amazon MP3 is cool, but they don't have a good inventory (yet). Please consider adding Rhapsody MP3 buy-now functionality.
The only thing (aside from background play) that would complete the experience for me is if the now-playing information was available at the dock connector. I have a speaker dock system with now-playing LCD that stares at me blankly when Pandora is running (but not when the iPod function is active).
