Sunday Rewound - God Showed Up

If you say the phrase, “…and then God showed up,†to anyone who has been in church very long, they will know exactly what that means. Generally this phrase is reserved for the more classically known Pentecostal outbreak. It is when things that were not planned begin to happen (at least they say they were not planned.) It is kind of a crowning moment for the local church. It is almost a way to validate what is going on. This morning, in our church, a church of many new believers, “God showed up.†But, it was different. Please let me explain.

I hate this phrase. I understand why we say it, and do not mind when people say it, but I have a church of new believers that if they heard this would be totally confused. God really did not show up all of a sudden. He was and is always there. He resides in us, and as we live and breathe, God is there. In our darkest moments of hidden sin, God is there. In our greatest victories, God is there. In the moments of confusion and stress, God is there. God loves you and is never NOT there. I think what happened this morning is that there was recognition of His presence, and for some it was the first time. People felt, yes felt, the reality of God in their life. So I want to rewind how I know God’s presence was felt.

            * I saw a husband and wife come to the altar expecting her health to be restored. I anointed her with oil, and we believed together that God will once again heal her. I looked into her eyes and saw a confidence that can only be rooted in something divine.

            * I saw people crying out to God in prayer as Arron and the band played. It was an acoustic set, and they were obedient as they followed their hearts.

            * I watched our bass player put down his instrument and go to the altar to pray. It takes a ton of courage to come down off the stage and simply go to God in prayer. It might not sound that hard, but it is. Trust me.

            * I prayed for numerous people, and every one was for different reasons, but with the same purpose. People understand they are a child of God and that in that moment, He wanted to be with them. They brought their worship and their needs, and I believe lives were changed. Seriously changed. Not just a short term, but a genuine life change.

This could be the most “churchy†post I have ever written, but this morning was very different for our church. We are still building and growing towards our Launch Date of February 1, 2009, and I fully believe that God is preparing us spiritually for what is about to happen. We can do a lot of physical labor, repainting, and all the other “stuff,†but God will ensure we are ready spiritually to handle what is about to happen. We are the church, His church, and if today is any indication as to how drastically He is going to change people’s lives, I am humbled even more that He would use me to lead this amazing group of people. Buckle up. Stay tuned. Get ready. Tallahassee is about to be changed through a recognition that God is already here, we simply have to acknowledge it.

May you recognize that you are desperate for God. May you never lose the recognition of your need for Him. From the lowest time to the greatest pinnacle, may you always know your God loves you, believes in you, and is pouring grace in your life. May you recognize the simplicity of grace and the price that was paid for you to receive it. For the moments, when we try to do to much, get in the way of the Spirit, and be something we cannot be…grace to us.

            Grace and peace to you.

Sunday Rewound

dscf0119So it is late on Sunday night and I have been thinking today about how great it is to be a part of Genesischurch.tv and its current place in history. Yes, we have endured some junk in the past few months that no church should have to go through, but we have a great plan in front of us regardless of what is in our past!

Sunday we kicked off the new series “Carnival,†which is all about keeping a God-centered family in this crazy Carnival world we live in. Here’s some highlights!

·      The morning started off really bad due to a sound system that went crazy. How is it we can be fine one Sunday and then when we comeback everything goes crazy! How is that possible? The band was patient, the media team scrambled, and we got things to operate the best we could. We still have some work to do, and we might have to call in a specialist! That’s you Steve V! Help!

·      God’s still amazes me. Seriously. Looking around at what God is doing in the lives of the people in our church is simply amazing. We are a bunch of young people trying to navigate our journey of faith, and God keeps directing us.

·      The band had every reason to be frustrated and just go through the motions, but they once again fought through, and led us to a place of worship.

·      Ryan Lavalle sang a part of one of the songs this week and did a tremendous job. He was one of the guys that was baptized last week. He has been in the band for a while and watching him continually grow is a honor to watch.

·      I kicked off the series Carnival with a live teaching today. I love speaking, and especially to these people I love so much.

·      Next week Pastor Brian will be speaking, and then the following two weeks Pastor Phil will be teaching. 3 Pastors in 4 weeks! It’s a Genesischurch Pastor buffet!

I hope everyone has a tremendous Turkey day. Enjoy the time with your friends and family and be safe!

Sunday Rewound

To open with some honesty, I had no idea how many people read the “Sunday Rewound†posts. But after not having it posted Monday, I had several emails, so I will do a better job now of posting it on Sundays! Sunday was a great day as we not only finished the Heaven and Hell series “Reservations,†but also held the first Drenched (baptism) Experience at the West Campus! Here are some of the highlights and a few pictures…

·      I was honored to be able to speak at the Midtown Campus last week, but it was nice to be back home seeing the people I serve with. Don’t know what you got till it’s gone!

·      I got there extra early to finish filling the portable baptistry, and it was nice and warm – 99 degrees to be exact! Nothing like a church with a hot tub I say…

·      The band led another great time of worship. Even though we were missing one of our band members (the rockin’ girl drummer extraordinaire Ashley) the rest of the gang did not miss a beat. (Get it? Beat? Drummer? Never mind…) They are so talented that our guitar player stepped over and played drums. Makes me sick how talented some people are!

·      Their acoustic feel of “Salvation is Here,†was tremendous.

·      Lots of visitors! Some because of invites to Drenched, and some due to marketing and other invites. If we can increase a little more before launch, we will be in a great position to grow quickly after launch.

·      Pastor Brian taught week 4 of “Reservations,†and it was answering practical questions about Heaven and Hell. It was practical and very funny! Check it out.

·      After the experience ended, we took about a five minute break and then began Drenched. We wanted parents to go pick up their children from GenesisKIDS and bring them to be a part of this special occasion.

·      I love baptizing people. It is just amazing that I get to do something that Jesus Himself took part in. That public profession is powerful and it was moving to watch these guys progress in their faith.

Okay so that’s it for this week, but I want to inform you that next week we will begin our series called, “Carnival.†We are planning an amazing series centered on how to have a God-centered family in this crazy carnival world we live in. This Sunday I will be kicking off the series with a live teaching from the West Campus. Bring all your friends and family to this exciting day!

Sunday Rewound Announcement:

I have gotten several emails about the fact that Sunday Rewound has not been posted. There is a reason. I am waiting on the pictures from the Drenched Experience to be able to post with the recap. I will be getting them tonight and will post with the recap tomorrow. Sorry for the delay!

Kenny Mayne Commercial

Kenny Mayne used to be one of my favorite anchors on Sportscenter. Now he has an internet show and this is a promo, commercial, or something. It had my laughing out loud. Scott Van Pelt is in it as well and is also hysterical! Worth five minutes of your day…

Volunteer Nugget

Today’s volunteer nugget is one I am currently dealing with and it is one I am sure you have all faced, are facing now, or will be soon. I want to encourage you today in the area of gaps.

I have been evaluating the West Campus pretty much all week. Every team, every ministry, building oversight, etc, has been getting the once over in anticipation of launch early next year. The main thing I have noticed is that I have gaps in certain personnel areas, but I have learned a valuable lesson through some of my prior failures: DO NOT JUST FILL A GAP WITH A WARM BODY!

I know we all want the gaps filled, but putting the wrong person in a spot is going to cause you way more issues long term than having a gap in the short term. God knows there is a gap, and you might have to wait and trust until he fills the spot. Here are a few things I have learned in gaps:

            * God will send the right person. Just be patient.

            * The right person might be under your nose. Look inward a little.

            * If you are a little uneasy about a person, put a short time limit. 4 Months is where I start. Not too long that it will kill you if it is wrong, but long enough to see if it will happen.

            * God will send the right person. Just be patient. (Have I already mentioned this?)

            * If you do put the wrong person in a gap, remove them! Secretly they probably know it too, and they will be relieved that you have helped them out.

            * Try them in another spot. Just because the 7 foot tall 350 pound man was a little intimidating in the kids department, does not mean they will not be a great usher. (Who would withhold tithes with that monster looking at them!)

Again let me encourage you to trust God in the gaps. Yes, it will tough and might mean someone else will be a little stretched, but in the long run you will avoid many long days of wondering how to get them out. For more detailed info on this subject, check out Jim Collins book, “Good to Great,†chapter 3. He takes a secular business approach but the principles are exactly the same for your organization.

Mind Dump

So I have been at home for half the day today working a little on church stuff, cleaning the house a little, and trying to finish laundry. In all that time, it has been very quiet and when that happens my mind begins to wander and I realized it is time for another edition of Mind Dump! In this edition I will be sharing a little of what I am reading, listening to, and I have decided to throw in a couple of random thoughts as well. Enjoy!

·      Dumbest TV Show I Have Watched Today – “H2O†Okay get ready. This show is on a channel called “The N†channel. This show is about “three teenage girls who have been transformed into crime fighting mermaids.†I am not kidding. Look it up. It was hysterical funny. Today’s episode was about the girls getting rowdy on some guys for fishing with the wrong kind of nest. Stinkin’ Funny!

·      Funniest Thing I Have Witnessed Today – Walking my wife’s ridiculous dog. He is only about 4 pounds, and I walked him on one of those retractable leashes. He will take off at full speed and when he reaches the end of the leash he literally flies in the air and does a complete circle! I am going to walk him more often now!

·      Biggest “Oh Man†Moment of The Day – Sitting down in my chair and getting all my stuff ready to work and then looking to see that the remote was all the way across the room. Had to undo everything and go get it. Can’t be without the remote even if it is not on!

·      Best Book I Have Read Today – Besides the bible, which is my favorite book (honestly it is, not just saying that) I started reading the book Tribes by Seth Godin. Thanks to my friend Josh Lane for giving it to me. So far it is really good. I needed a fresh look on leadership, and it provides that.

·      Most Recently Downloaded CDs – Within the last couple of weeks I have downloaded John Legend’s album “Evolver,†it’s not that good. Pink’s “Funhouse†is not bad if you like her. I do like her. I think many people underestimate how good of a vocalist she really is. Today I downloaded Tracy Chapman’s new release “Our Bright Future.†People either love her or hate her and while I did not like her previous couple of albums, I really like this one. The girl is deep and track number 3 “Save Us All†is a bluesy folksy cool vibe about salvation that I enjoy. Before you crucify me for not listing any Christian music, know that I listen to some of it, but none has really got me excited lately. Sorry!

·      Biggest Personal Challenge I Am Facing Right Now – Finishing my Doctorate! It is killing me with all the writing. Only have two classes to finish and its done! My wife is pushing an additional Ph.D, but she’s crazy!

·      Biggest Church Related Challenge – Keeping sane inside the craziness that is Genesischurch.tv! Changing the city for Christ is a formidable task that is not without troubles, constant change, restructuring, spiritual warfare, and having to live a life that is full of unknowns. I love being called to lead, and God is stretching that gift right now.

·      Most Excited About In The Next Few Months – The public launch of the West Campus! It has taken us longer than we expected, but after it is done we will be glad we waited to get everything right before we pulled to trigger. Only get one shot at launch!

·      Most Excited About in The Next Few Minutes – My family coming home! It’s not good for me to be alone and just think. My mind goes to crazy places as you can see!

Okay enjoy your day, and I will be posting my next edition of Volunteer Nuggets tomorrow!

Sunday Rewound - Midtown Edition

As I write this tonight I want you to know one thing: I Love Doing What I Do! Today was no exception. I had the enormous honor of speaking at the Midtown Campus in both services today. Then at 3:00 we had Drenched, our Baptismal service, in which we baptized 9 people. What an amazing day! The other side of the coin is that I missed my West Side Gang. I have an amazing staff and team of volunteers so I knew everything would be fine, but the “manager†in me was still a little nervous. Cut me a little slack, I did not even call them constantly to “check on them.†They are trained, and I let them do what they do. They really are a great group of people to lead. So today I will be giving you Sunday Rewound – Midtown Edition!

·      The place looked amazing! We kicked off the new series “Carnival,†and Pastor Scott and his team did an unbelievable job making the theater posses a carnival feel. All it needed was a few elephants and popcorn and it would have been eerily close. I am not sure people grasp how deeply talented Pastor Scott is.

·      Pastor Jerad and the band went with an acoustic set, and they did incredible. There was a definite anointing on them as they led us in songs that were both moving emotionally and spiritually. Kathy Stock led a prayer in both services and this is one anointed young lady. I had read some of her writings on Facebook, so I knew she was a great writer, but then her prayers brought a real side of her to life. She has a genuine faith that is birthed out of an authentic relationship with Jesus. Truly inspiring! The band operated with a tremendous sense of spiritual unity that was easy to follow in worship with.  This is another example of the level of leadership that Pastor Jerad has been gifted with.

·      So as I prepared to speak today, I have to admit I was a little nervous. I was faced with the task of  being the morning speaker in a church that is accustomed to Pastor Brian Hunter, who is a truly gifted and anointed communicator. Of course I was afraid people would compare us, to which I would lose, and I hate losing! But I decided to speak how God has wired me to speak and when I figured that out, the nerves went away.

·      Today was the first time I have spoke the same message in back to back experiences. Felt weird. Both experiences felt different, and so did the messages. I went WAY too long in the first and tried to do a little better in the second.

·      I kicked of our series “Carnival,†which is a series focused on developing families with a God-centered focus. The upcoming weeks will be life-changing for many families.

·      I spoke on the topic of breaking the cycle of sin in your life, and during the teaching I admitted that my most memorable carnival experience as a child was being frightened by a Bearded Lady Midget! That’s a true story.

·      Being at the Midtown Campus reminded me how amazing our church is. While Midtown was having their moment with God, most reports say that West had another good day! Our church is making a difference in Tallahassee and we have just begun. God is up to something amazing through us and I am honored to be a small part of it!

Tonight’s Opportunities

westcampus-frontbuttonJust wanted to take a minute to remind everyone that tonight at the West Campus is OneNight, our believer’s experience. Does this mean that an unbeliever is not welcome? Of course not, but the intent of this experience is to take the believer deeper in their relationship with God. It will be a night of intimate worship, prayer, and I will be teaching on the topic of communion. I will be breaking down this sacrament by looking at it through the eyes of Jesus. It will be a new look at an amazing event that we still get the honor of partaking in. The night will culminate with us celebrating communion together. OneNight will take place at the West Campus located at 862 Blountstown Highway, behind Tallahassee Community College. Childcare will be provided.

parentsIf this is not for you, we have another option at the Midtown Campus! Pastor Phil will begin a four-week class on parenting. This class will give some solid biblical foundations for parenting, as well as a host of other things relating to parenting. This will be a video based curriculum with small group style discussion facilitated by Pastor Phil. This will be a great thing for parents or those who are considering making the bold move to parenthood. This will be at the Annex on Thomasville Road @ 7:00. Childcare will be provided.

We want to encourage each and every member of Genesischurch.tv to attend one of these amazing events!

Volunteer Nuggets

chicken-nuggetsI have been gifted with amazing volunteers at Genesischurch.tv West. When I say that, I am not simply bragging on them, I am making a statement that you do not always have to have paid staff to make things happen. Ninety percent of the Churches of God in the state of Florida are under a hundred in attendance, and affording to pay staff is not a financial option. Most of the time, the Pastor is struggling to make a living. So we have an option, sit around and wait for God to just make our grow and then hire, or take the people God has given you, uniquely gifted and let them serve. I currently have a leadership team of 5 people (myself included) and I am the only one paid. The rest are volunteers and they are handling business. We have a volunteer team of almost 40 people that are trained, and ready to serve on any given Sunday. Pastors have been emailing me asking how to make that happen. It is a long discussion and really needs to be contextualized for each church or ministry, but there are some principles that I believe are prevalent to any situation. Please hear me, I HAVE NOT FIGURED IT ALL OUT! But in my failures to run a volunteer led church, I have learned some valuable lessons. Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing some of the most valuable ones I have learned.

Lesson 1: Not All Volunteers Are Treated Equally.

If you want to mess things up quickly, try to treat all your volunteers the same. The “she got a new computer so I should get one too†mentality is for those who serve out of a self absorbed position and should be removed instantly. “But they are my only, nursery worker, greeter, (fill in the blank with whatever)†you say? They will always be because that mentality will block others from working beside them. Each volunteer will come to you with unique gifts and talents and callings, and to try to cover everyone the same way makes void their uniqueness. Equip them, train them, love them, and then let them serve. Sound too tough? No, it is the peak of loving them, because you are loving them individually not corporately. Okay, I think you get it. Check back next week for another nugget from a flawed leader!
