Which Way Do You Vote - Beer or Wine?

Beer and politics don't mix, or so they say ... but according to a recent CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll, you're libation of choice may say something about your political leanings. The data from the poll, conducted by phone in March of this year, seems to suggest that beer drinkers lean slightly toward the presumptive Republican nominee, John McCain, while wine-drinkers seem to favor either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton.

Hmmm ... can we say, then, that wine tends to go blue while beer tends to go red? I doubt it.

Although I put little or no stock in polls of this nature, political or otherwise, the findings are a little intriguing nonetheless. If the data is to be trusted - and we can extrapolate these finding from the relative few poll respondents to the entire population - then it would seem that lower income voters with less education favor both beer and a Republican nominee for President. What do you want to bet that this notion flies in the face of what the two Democratic hopefuls are counting on come November?

I won't betray my personal political persuasion here, 'cause I'm here for the love of beer and not a political soapbox, but I'm a little uneasy with the subtle implication from the Poll's accompanying article that poor, dumb people prefer beer and vote Republican while the affluent and educated sip their wine and vote Democratic. I am, of course, committing several logical fallacies in this jump, but it does seem to smack of that sentiment more than a little.

Could it be that the folks over at CNN clearly prefer wine with their polling? Hmmm ...

This educated and gainfully employed beer drinker will continue to drink my beer and vote my conscience regardless of this poll's findings. Whatever political camp you find yourself in come November, just remember to have your drink of choice at the ready - either to toast with or cry in.

Craft Beer, Mr. President?

Last week I asked beerphilosopher.com readers which Presidential candidate they'd most like to have a beer with and the results of the poll were very interesting, indeed! The poll basically came down to a two-way race between the junior Senator from Illinois, Barack Obama and Republican outsider, Ron Paul. Not the two I would have thought would be slugging it out for beer-drinking dominance. With 50 total votes, the next closest candidate was John McCain with a total of only 8 votes.

As you can see, Barack and Ron pulled ahead by a substantial margin in our little poll, leaving everyone else in the politicized dust. Since there can be only one winner, however (unless we were to take it to court, of course), we congratulate Senator Barack Obama for being the candidate beerphilosopher.com readers cite as the hopeful with whom they'd most like to imbibe in a good beer. I wonder if this also translates to the candidate that most readers would also like to see take the White House in '08? Since no one, save for my wife, left a comment about their vote, I guess I'll never know!

Anyway, congrats Barack. Sorry, there's no prize involved.
