The Summer Games are for 14-15 year old athletes and are held every two years. This year, the trials for the Zone 6 Team (all of Vancouver Island) will be held at the meet in Duncan (June 7/8th) and will include both club and high school athletes. Competition is keen and an athlete may have to WIN an event with both ages to be selected. Sometimes coming second in two or three events can earn an athlete a spot on the team. Steeplechase, Pole Vault, Hammer and Racewalk can be easier to earn entry onto the team. The two days following the Comox Meet, (June 30 and July 1) there will be a Summer Games Camp for those selected to the team (which is usually 40-45 athletes and spares in case an opening comes up. It is a very worthwhile experience, so athletes who are 14 and 15 can think of what events they can focus on to try to get a chance to experience the Summer Games - Kelowna July 24-27.
At sticker meets (also ***meets) athletes should check around the track for our club, and try to sit together. Stickers and a sign-up sheet are available on each day at the meets. Schedules for the meets will be available before the meet so that you can check the events and times for arrival. Our club is responsible for running all the high jump events at each Vancouver Island Meet, so we need lots of parents and older athletes to help out. Training is available if you haven’t done it before. On the track room door about a week before the meet, there is a sign-up sheet for athletes who want to attend a meet, plus one for parents to help at the high jump.
Athletes should also note: to qualify for Vancouver Island Athletic Association Placing and Ribbons you must compete in at least four Vancouver Island Meets. It is always good to make sure you compete in at least one run, jump, and a throwing event.
