Escape
by auyongtc
Written at 6.45pm:
It’s been a boring day. Decided to escape for a breather, ended up in 1Utama alone. Normally, I wouldn’t come out to a shopping complex to loiter on my own. But I guess, from now onwards, I’ll do more of this, getting out more often, even if I’ve no money to spend on anything.
Hanging out at the MPH bookstore members’ lounge is quite relaxing and calming. Equipped with a book, it’s a nice, cosy place to spend the boring days away. I think I can stay here long enough to have the contour of my butt sink in on this couch here. Valerie was nice enough to drop by the lounge to lend me her iBook for me to surf the net (I was lazy to lug my laptop along), but alas, there’s no wireless signal here
Seems like as I grew older, I don’t read as much. Sure as hell I don’t study regularly, even though I do try my best to attend classes in the college. Most books I read these days are IT reference books. Really have no idea where’s my interest in reading. I’ll make effort to come by here more often to catch up on reading. Not just on IT books, I promise
Met up with Marcus and Benet last night over mamak. Both great friends from high school are finally back, although it’s only for a while. We’ve decided to make plans to Genting for a short trip, that’ll be a good nearby vacation for me.
Christmas is soon approaching again, they’ve started selling Christmas decorations here in 1Utama. It’s nice to see trees being decorated. I think I’ll go over to Bangsar Shopping Centre and Atria soon. Not because I want to buy ornaments (got nowhere to hang it, perhaps on Valerie
), but I just love seeing people shop for Christmas!
tsewei suggested that she wanted to do a South Park’s Merry Fcuking Christmas song at the end of the choir. If she gets it her way, I think she’ll definitely get arrested for racism, or better, get deported back to Malaysia (yay!
)
Merry Fcuking Christmas!
Update at 8.34pm:
We’re now having dinner @ Fish & Co. (Valerie’s treat! yay!) - and yes, we ordered mussels!

Madman Walking On The NPE Highway
by auyongtc
Was driving home early this morning around 1.15am after my pool session at Kafe Rack in Subang Jaya. I took the route of NPE Highway (there goes another RM 1.60 for the tarmac) heading towards Kuala Lumpur. Right opposite where the Shell station of Taman Sri Manja (can say pretty darn near where Canny Ong got murdered), I saw an image of a person trying to cross the road.
Upon closer view, that guy, a chinese in his late-30’s wearing nothing but his undies, was not crossing the road, but rather, walking IN the middle of the 3 lane highway with both his hands held up behind his head. Crazy fella, managed to slow down and stayed on the left lane to avoid him. I then noticed that a motorcycle almost hit him, perhaps the motorcyclist was riding way too fast to notice the human obstacle. I stopped at the side of the road, and promptly made a call on my mobile phone to Emergency Services (112).
Told the guy of the incident and he connected me to a nearby police station, gave down the details of the incident and my contact number. By the time I was done on the phone, the madman walked off the highway’s Jalan Templer exit and up the bridge towards the Jalan Templer roundabout. I followed him, while continue to provide specific location information over the phone to the police officer. He had then dispatched the patrol units around the area to investigate this incident. I followed him until he was stopped by the police and interrogated at the roadside, past the primary school at the roundabout, almost reaching the Mobil petrol station and the mosque.
Stopped for a while to see what was the police doing to the madman, he was crouching down, constantly saying sorry in Malay language. I then told the police officers that it was me who made the call and they said they’ll transport him to a nearby hospital. Well, so much for a weird incident.
I attempted to take a few photographs (the police officers allowed me), but it didn’t come out any good with my T610’s cameraphone. In case you’re wondering how he looks like, very much like RT (referenced here, here, here, here, and here)!

Maybank2U to charge for online banking
by auyongtc
This came very much as a surprise to me. Read it first at Jeff Ooi’s Screenshots that Maybank2U will be charging RM 12 per annum (in 2 half yearly payments of RM 6 each), as covered here.
I’m not at all happy at this sudden change of terms for the service. I have a savings account, an i-account (Internet-based current account), 6 credit cards (well, all on the same credit limit, 3 for myself, and 3 being supplementary for my mom), and a business current account with Maybank. As such, I have 2 separate Maybank2U accounts, one for my personal banking, the other for business.
What the new terms means to me is that I have to pay RM 24 per annum just to maintain the Maybank2U online banking access and privilege. Well, it may not appear to be much, but this sudden change with less than a month’s notice (effective 20th December 2004) is really catching a lot of users off-guard. Some other users may argue about the ATM charges of RM 0.50 per withdrawal transactions above the first 4 transactions per month, but I can still accept that as being reasonable. Perhaps because Maybank doesn’t charge for the new Maybankard ATM chipcard when it was introduced, while some other banks charged a fee for that.
What really irked me is that how they’re changing their stand on the i-account, labeled as the Internet banking account. What’s an Internet banking account without default/free access to the Internet banking facility? If Maybank2U wants to charge other account holders (savings, business, etc) for Internet banking facilities, it’s justifiable. But charges extra for the features that was supposed to be the main feature of the account? This is just plainly unreasonable.
Of course, I can choose to convert my i-account to a standard current account, but losing the Internet banking facility would also mean losing the ability to get my monthly statements online. And if I were to get printed statements from the bank branch (read: hassle), then I will be charged RM 10 for the statement printing service PLUS RM 1 for each additional page! This is absurd!
Perhaps I’ll check with Jeff on how to bring up this matter to the attention of Bank Negara. We just can’t let these corporations stomp all over us as they please!

Guest blog by tsewei…
by tsewei
You’re probably wondering: “Am I at the right blog?” yup, you are. This is still auyong’s blog. I’m just the verbose guest blogger here to pester you with my incessant rantings. And no, I’m not trying to take over his blog.
You might now wonder: “Who the heck are you?” hee, well, I guess I should introduce myself for a bit here..
Hie! I’m Tse Wei. PJ is my home, but now i’m currently living and studying in Singapore coz i sold my soul to their government in exchange for free education.
Currently pursuing a degree in Communication Studies, in my second year, and hoping to get into the television broadcast industry in the future. hmm, what else? oh yeah, am 21 this year, a music n movie maniac, advocator of shopping as therapy, vertically challenged, and I miss malaysian food.
Intro done. yeah so i guess now i should move on n talk abt something else.
Me and camera.* Being a film-maker wannabe (or so I think now), me and 2 of my friends signed up as a team for the Fly By Night challenge, a video competition, over the past weekend. The topic was released on Friday evening, and we had 2 days to conceptualise, script, film and edit a five-minute video by Sunday afternoon. It was madness. Me and my friend just sat there and blinked at each other in silence when they announced the topic. “fever”. Our minds were blank. But heck, they will screen watever crap we came up with, so we ended up doing some weird shit that is supposedly “art”. (yeah rite. *rolls eyes*)
Sleepless weekend.* Had a grand total of 6 hours’ sleep for the 2 days. Looked like a zombie at the end of it, bleary-eyed, moving about with my soul half floating somewhere else.
Adrenaline rush.* With the extremely limited time we had, yeah it was totally thrilling with all that energy pumped up, ready to run about everywhere to shoot our video, n rushing to edit everything in time.
Drive-by shooting.* Drove around during midnight and stuck half the camera out of the car window precariously filming lights. That was fun, with the cold wind waking me up, but my hand started to ache halfway thru supporting the camera, and started to get worried abt the S$5000 that we’ll have to pay the school if it falls out of the window.
Security guard.* Or rather, the lack of, this time round. heehee. yup, I too had a stupid encounter with security guards at a shopping mall during one of my previous video assignments. Ok, admittedly, we were in the wrong coz we didn’t get permission and happily went in anyway with our equipment. But hey, they didn’t need to get like 2 security guards to escort us out of the place!! Not like we’re about to harm the public, or whack them up with our tripod stand.
??: real cacat case.
That was it. My weekend. Maddening, n exhilarating. And that’s all for my first guest blog post. ^_^

There’s no service like Quality-of-Service (QoS)
by auyongtc
I just got myself another Linksys WRT54G router today (many thanks to CheeV for the help in getting it and the lunch too at Kiwi Express, Sri Hartamas). Promptly installed the latest pre-release 3rd-party firmware by Sveasoft (gotta subscribe for USD 20 per year for the firmware and support), and it’s been great!
Beefed up the wi-fi security, and then enabled the Quality-of-Service (QoS) feature. Now I can smoothly use multiple applications with ease, not worrying about service quality especially when services like Voice over IP (VoIP) is concerned.
All my downloading applications are on a Bulk only priority, where as VoIP and SSH gets Premium priority. As such, the fat pipe (all 4.5mbps of it
) can be left to download stuff on P2P networks, and when VoIP applications such as Skype is running, Skype will have higher priority on the packets. Now I don’t have to worry about throttling the P2P apps’ connection speed whenever I talk on Skype
Also, I’m able cap the LAN ports. Hehe, don’t tell my sister that her port is being capped at 256kbps only
Really, there’s no service like QoS!

I realised…
by auyongtc
… that I haven’t been blogging much on things of interest. So this post I’ll try to post a lil on everything that has been going on, kinda a rojakpost.
I met up with Leonard, my high school buddy on Friday evening, around 5.30pm for happy hour in KLCC. Was waiting for him just outside Dome, at the railing beside the escalator. There were another person waiting for his friend around the same area I waited. After about 5 mins, this idiot security guard (perhaps his name is Jefferi
< --- internal joke, michaelooi would know) came up to us and said “No waiting here, please move”.
I was like WTF?! I didn’t bother responding, nor did I bother with moving my ass out of the way. I’m not gonna face this kinda bullshit treatment in my own country. He then walked off, staring at me still, but I didn’t care, waited until Leonard showed up. We then adjourned to chinoz at the park for some beer and catching up of our lives after the good ol’ schooldays.
Just when we started talking about the rest of the peeps from school, we saw Chee Su showing up at a table nearby. He’s currently with Shell and it was his last day here before he flew to Holland to resume his work for over a year. Nice chap that fellow, still very boyish, although taller now compared to the schooldays. It’s nice to meet up with him again.
By the time we started the 2nd jug, we decided to have dinner. The sea bass dish served in chinoz is quite good, IMHO. Worth a try! Next week, when more buddies are back, there’ll be more drinking sessions definitely. Marcus should be back this week from New Zealand and Benet will be back from Miri this or next week. It’s gonna be fun, once again…
Came home that night and then as midnight approaches, CHiQ persuaded to join her, Paul and YP for mamak in Sri Petaling. Since Paul decided to drive down all the way from Cheras, I agreed. Food there was quite good, and CHiQ finished another roll of film on her lomo. She’s gonna spend loads of money processing countless rolls of film and printing the pictures!
So that was Friday night.
Saturday I stayed home, watched Man Utd slaughtered Charlton 2-0 at night, celebrating with a bottle of white wine with my family
Sunday night is boring, and here I am posting this…
Oh, had some fun mocking that stupid jefferi at michaelooi’s blog though. Hehe, resetted that stupid jerk’s DSL router a few times with Paul - fun!

All I want for Christmas…
by auyongtc
… yeah yeah, I know it’s early, it’s not even Hari Raya yet… but hey, look what’s caught my eyes!
All I really really really really really really really (did I mention really?) want for Christmas this year are…

… a brand-new original double-sided The Shawshank Redemption - 10th Anniversary movie poster, newly created by the artist Drew Struzan, if you know, being the artist behind the posters of Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Hellboy and others. Really love that movie theatre poster!
Well, there’s a limited edition Commemorative Giclée available, hand-signed by Drew himself and Frank Darabont, but at USD 650 each, nahh… getting a movie theatre poster is better
Also, I’d like the…

… accompanying brand new 10th Anniversary DVD 2-disc Special Edition box set!
I sure hope I get my hands on at least one of these by Xmas this year. You hear that, Santa?!
Hopefully, this list will not extend longer… hehehe
Now, go out (or sit at home and do the shopping online) and start finding the stuff for me for Xmas! You better do it quick, before I start up Wham’s Last Christmas song and start singing annoyingly to you…
Last Christmas, I gave you my heart…
But the very next day, you gave it away…”
Scared dee? Remember, Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
