Jyri Engeström

As a PhD student at the Department of Organisation, Work and Technology at the Lancaster University Management School, I'm interested in the relationship between technical innovation and organizational transformation. For a year I participated as an ethnographer in Nokia's venturing activities. Now I work on stories that tell about the practices, objects and narratives enacted in the venturing world to renew (and, in some cases, disrupt) the mobile phone and the sociomaterial arrangements that reproduce it.

Before starting PhD studies at Lancaster in 2002, I worked for Tera Group, a venture capital partnership, and co-founded ShiftControl Finland, a geeks' headhunting company based on online friend-to-friend referrals. Prior to that, I worked as a Concept Designer at Satama Interactive, where I co-headed the design of Nokia.com. Before the Internet bubble, I designed cd-roms at a multimedia agency called To the Point [image] for a few years.

Together with a group of friends I co-founded Aula (Finnish for "lobby"), a nonprofit cooperative to advance the vision of a creative society. Aula regularly organizes talks and gatherings in Helsinki to discuss and debate the trends that are emerging as strategic to this broad agenda. In 2001-2002 Aula operated a social club [image] in downtown Helsinki.

I live with my partner Ulla-Maaria in Helsinki.

I also do some yoga, occasionally skateboard with my brother, and play ball in FC Sekunda [image] and Arabian Sheikit [image].

With the help of other Aula members, I've organized two Meeting of Minds conferences in Helsinki. Together with Alex Nieminen and Marko Ahtisaari I recently edited a book titled Exposure: From Friction to Freedom based on the MoM'03 event. And here's the link to MoM'01.

Every now and then I also contribute to online conversations through my weblog at zengestrom.com.
