A SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY

Ashley Bryn Clay...then and now!
I am working on a major project and it requires going back through photo albums. In doing so I ran across a story that my granddaughter Ashley wrote for me when she was six years old
This is what she wrote:
A SNOW DAY By Ashley Bryn Clay
It was a quiet evening at home. It was my bed time. So mommy tucked me in. The next day it snowed! "I like snow, " I said. We made cookies, pie and snow cones. I was excited about it. We gave the pie to my friend and the cookies to the birds. WOW! It has been a fun day. I hope it snows again tomorrow. THE END! To Grammie with love from Ashley Clay.
When I read that story again it made me realize two things. How desperately fast life goes by and how desperately simple life is when we are young such as...1. A quiet evening at home; 2. Mommy tucking her in bed; 3. Excitement about making snow cones; 4. Hoping it would snow again tomorrow; 5. Concluding that it had been a fun day.
This past week Doug and Gail took my little Ashley, now all grown up, and dropped her off at a dorm room at Evangel College. I am thrilled and happy but must confess when I read her letter that she wrote back in 1997, I wanted my little red-headed granddaughter back. I wanted to get another letter relating a day of simple little-girl things. BUT THAT'S NOT LIFE! And so now I will write her a letter:

Dear Ashley,
You are all grown up! You are now preparing for the future that God has planned for you. You probably will not be making snow cones. Mommy may not be there to tuck you in. Life may not always be so simple but keeping Jesus first in your life will make it a lot easier. You will be developing the gifts that God has placed within you. No one else is just like you. There is only one Ashley Clay in the world. Your days will be filled with studying, meeting new friends, growing and developing spiritually. You will be giving...not pies and cookies, but your smiles, your kind words, and the gift of your friendship to teachers and classmates. IT WILL BE A FUN YEAR FILLED WITH FUN DAYS. I know this will happen because I will be praying for you every day. I love you whole bunchie, rilley unchies. Gram Clay

PS That last line sounds a little strange but my family understands what it means.

AN HISTORICAL WEEK

It is almost too difficult to describe what a wonderful, spiritual, exciting, thrilling week I had at our General Council in Indianapolis. However I must first thank some very special people. Had it not been for them I probably wouldn't have been able to attend. First of all my dear friend Helen Waggoner. She is the secretary to the former General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Tom Trask. By virtue of her position she was able to stay in the Mariott Hotel which is connected to the Convention Center. She had a beautiful room with two queen beds and very graciously shared the room with me. Secondly, her daughter and husband, Dave and Sheila Bowering, let me ride to Indianapolis with them. They had to be there for the National Fine Arts Festival which was convening at the same time as our General Council. Thank you Helen; Thank you Dave and Sheila; Thank you Ryan and Kyle for sharing your space in the van with me.
I was able to hear my grand daughter Bethany perform in a trio and in a choir. They received a Superior with Honors rating. And of course I feel so privileged to have been there for this event.
Then what a glorious experience to see both my son and son-in-law receive the honor of being elected to office. John is now the new General Secretary of the Assemblies of God and he and his family will be moving to Springfield, MO. Doug was elected the Executive Presbyter of the Great Lakes Region. I can tell you, as a mother, my heart was overflowing with gratefulness to the Lord.
The services were so great. It really was indescribable to watch 26,000 men, women, young people and boys and girls so focused on the Lord. The Missions Service was outstanding. I am convinced that we are going to be witnessing a great revival across America.
Then to top off all this beautiful week, Amy and Jeremy surprised their dad by driving in from Memphis, Tn. on Friday evening. I was able to have some time with them on Saturday before we left to come home. They are expecting a baby and of course great gram is thrilled. I am so thankful for family. I was able to be with Gail, Ashley and Kaylee. (The three beautiful women in Doug's life.) However...they are growing up far to fast for this gram. Jonathan was there and he stayed by my side and kept me going in the right direction. Bethany had to spend a lot of time with her FAF group but I was able to be with her also.
One of my great weakness (I guess it's a weakness) is being emotional. But this was an emotional week for me and I let the tears flow. When John was elected to his position, Debbie had to go to the platform and before that great crowd of people acknowledged me...I felt so honored. HOWEVER as I sat there I couldn't help but think back to the time that my husband went home to be with the Lord. My one concern was my children, at that time ages 9,14,18 and how could they survive without their earthly father...BUT GOD....He promised me to be a father to them. He has faithfully kept His promise. In spite of all my shortcomings and failures, "there hath not failed one word in all His promises." BEAUTIFUL CANADA

We just returned from a fabulous week in Canada. Debbie and Bethany drove in to Adrian from Iowa, spent two days here and then the three of us drove to Cobourg, Ontario. Debbie's husband John was the evening speaker for the Lakeshore Pentecostal Camp. (They are the Assemblies of God of Canada) It was a beautiful campgrounds located on Lake Ontario. The people were very friendly. This a picture of the tabernacle. It was quite unique. The camp itself is 100 years old. The tabernacle is also very old. However the the building has been refurbished on the outside. A foyer and restrooms have been added but the inside structure, the pews, etc., have been preserved. You could see the past history of the building as you sat in the service and yet it was very comfortable with the improvements that had been made. Wouldn't it be great for if that could happen to us who are getting older. That is, keeping who we really are on the inside but upgrading that which is falling apart on the outside! Oh well wishful thinking!!

We had a very exciting thing happen. We feel it was a miracle. John flew out of Iowa on Saturday morning. He had to fly into Detroit and then on to Toronto where he was to be picked up and taken to the camp grounds in Ontario. He got into Detroit and his flight was cancelled. They only flight he could get was into Washington D.C. ....then another late flight which would get him into Toronto at 10:00 pm. He really had no choice so he boarded the plane in Detroit waiting to take off to get him to D.C. Debbie, Bethany and I left my home at about 8:30 am to drive into Ontario via Detroit. As we were driving by the Detroit airport, John's Cel phone rang. He wanted to let Debbie know about the delay. He asked where we were and when we told him we were 2 minutes past the airport...he said, "swing around and pick me up." He managed to get off the plane, get his luggage off, get a $200.00 refund and a $30.00 food voucher. This was certainly divine intervention. He was able to be with his family for the drive into Ontario, arrived several hours earlier that the flight and received the refund and food money." God is a great, mighty, faithful God and always works on our behalf. (Picture is of John getting in our car at the airport.)

One of the most spectacular sights on the campgrounds was this picture taken at 10:00 pm one evening. The picture probably doesn't really show what we saw. ( This will be my excuse for getting a new camera). There was a full moon and it was shining across the lake. I had Bethany stand in the picture. Lake Ontario is 193 miles long and 53 miles wide and yet at some points we could see the New York Skyline. It really was a breathtaking, romantic sight. I had plenty of breath but not a lot of romance. However I had Bethany and I wouldn't have traded her for all the romance in the world.

It was a wonderful week, we met a lot of wonderful people, make a lot of wonderful new friends, heard wonderful preaching and saw a lot of God's wonderful creation. All of these things are enjoyed so much more for we who have experienced the wonderful love and grace of our wonderful Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Even thought I am 75 I am still full of wonder at God's marvelous creation and of how much He loves each of us.

We left Cobourg and traveled to Niagra Falls (the Canadian side) Bethany had never seen the falls and I had never seen the falls from the Canadian side. They were beautiful I believe these are the "Horshoe Falls." We left there and arrived in Windsor about 6:oo pm. As we drove across the Ambassador bridge, we heard the news about the bridge collapsing in Minneapolis. Once I again I was reminded how very fragile life is and how important it is to walk close to Jesus every day.
