RED BARNS AND ORANGE SUNSETS

There is a lot of road construction going on in our area and so we have been doing a lot of back road driving to get to where we want to go. On one of these trips I shouted for Nonie, who was driving, to pull over. Being the great sister that she is, she didn't ask questions and pulled into a driveway. I jumped out of the car and took a picture of this beautiful red barn. I have always been fascinated with old barns and wondered why most of them are painted red. One theory is that there was a big sale on red paint which caused the local hardware company to purchase more and then the farmers bought more, and so the cycle was started. I also found out that there is an organization in Michigan called "Save Our Barns." I guess I am not the only one that loves the old barns.
Two nights ago at 9:30 pm I looked out my front door and saw the most unusual sunset I had ever seen. I stood there in awe! After these two incidents I couldn't help but think how the Lord has provided so much beauty for us. I know there are things happening in our world that cause us concern. When we watch the news on TV it's a wonder our hearts don't fill us with fear and cause heart attacks. In God's Word Paul gives us some powerful advice, "Fix your thoughts on what is true and good and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely, and dwell on the fine, good things in others. Think about all you can praise God for and be glad about. " God has provided so many good and beautiful things all around for us to enjoy. Did you notice the mailbox in front of the barn? I am confident that the people who live there go to that mailbox each day to pick up their mail. God has given us a mailbox (the Bible) and no matter how many times we open it there is always a piece of good news and it's just what we need as an antidote for all the bad news. I am not involved in the "Save the Barn Campaign." But I want to save and preserve my ability to see the beauty of the Lord all around me.
PS If you live in this area can you guess where the barn is located?

LOVE LESSON FROM A 3 YEAR OLD

I had a unique experience two weeks ago. I do the music for 3,4, and 5 year olds. We do it in 3- 20 minute segments. We call it "Little Watts Music." Every year in June our five year olds move up to Kid's Church and we get a new group of 3 year olds. We had a new little boy named Tyler in our three year old group. I was warned that he loved to run. Believe me he is a "mover and a shaker." I try to patient with these little one knowing that mother nature is telling them to wiggle while we are trying to teach them to sit in their chair and sing. Well Tyler was just like a little woolly worm...wiggling and running all over the place. Barb, his teacher was being very patient. My patience was wearing thin. Suddenly I stooped down, took him gently by the shoulders and looked him directly in his big blue eyes and said firmly, "Tyler, you will obey and you will not run out the door." He looked shocked, jumped in my lap and I held him so he couldn't run. Very gently he turned around, reached his hand up, patted my face. When I looked down at him he kissed his little hand and blew me a kiss and smiled.

I had a melt down! The pat on the cheek, the big blue eyes and then the kiss! He had me in the palm of his hand.
I couldn't help but think of how much Jesus loves us. When we get out of control and seem to be running in circles He takes us in His arms and it is as though He pats us gently, kisses us tenderly, settles us down and gives us His peace. How thankful I am for the constant daily reminders of how much He loves me. And this time He reminded me through a running, wiggling little boy named Tyler! (Isn't he cute? And he didn't run as much this week!)

FRIENDS PLUS TRADITION EQUALS FUN

Karla McKelvey, the former Office Manager from Bethany Assembly was in town. Several years ago she and her husband, Dave, moved to Florida. She had worked at Bethany for a number of years and her contribution to the church was invaluable. Each year when she comes back to visit her family, my sister, Nonie and I have a luncheon. We invite the girls that had the privilege of working with Karla for an afternoon of fun and fellowship. It is one of those special times of sharing wonderful memories. Karla had a gift of bringing unity and peace to the girls. Her presences in the office always made a difference no matter what the situation. Interestingly enough that has not changed. Even though we were only able to be together for a couple of hours the strong bond of love was prevalent from the moment they all arrived.

I have been reflecting on the gift of friendship. If I could measure in dollars what my special friends mean to me, it would be in the millions. Charles Spurgeon put it this way; "Friendship is one of the sweetest joys of life. Many might have failed beneath the bitterness of their trial had they not found a friend."

The greatest joy experienced from the luncheon was the knowledge that these friendships will go on on throughout all eternity, because each of us have accepted Jesus as our "best friend."
PS Karla, hope you are still my friend after you see your picture. It's the only one I had!!!

FLOWERS STRAWBERRIES AND JUNE

I love June! My sister and her husband come from Florida to stat 5 months with me. My sis and I do lots of fun and exciting things. We are never bored! This morning I started my day at our Morning Glory Prayer Meeting..(isn't that a great name) with some wonderful girls that really know how to pray. On the way to the prayer meeting I stopped at our Child Care and loaded a computer program for our director, Becky. After prayer meeting we picked up some roses and birthday cards and visited one of our prayer partners who had hip surgery. Today was her birthday. When I came home Nonie, (my sis) had purchased a flat of strawberries so we made freezer jam. (It is yummy!) Tonight we are going to have strawberry shortcake, made with homemade biscuits with plenty of whipped cream.

Later I went out to see how my flowers were surviving. I don't exactly have a green thumb. Last fall someone had thinned out their Iris bed and given me some bulbs. I planted them but didn't really take very good care of them. My house was being resided and I knew they probably wouldn't survive all the tramping of the workers.
Much to my amazement ... well you can see for yourself in the picture above. I thought of the Scripture that says God cares for the Lilies of the fields. He certainly must have felt sorry for those Iris and protected them. Isn't that just like the Lord. He is so loving, gracious and merciful, even when we neglect our spiritual lives.
Yes I love June but I have discovered that every month of the year contributes special beauty for us to enjoy. Sometimes during January and February we have to look a little harder but there is always evidence of God's marvelous creation all around us. I am thankful for the luscious strawberries, the beautiful flowers but I am also grateful for the rain, the snow and all of the other blessings that come to us throughout every season.
Jesus is the reason that every season of life provides wonderful gifts for us to enjoy.

Seize the Treasured Moments

Last evening was our Bethany Child Care Graduation. For the past twenty years I have been working with our director, Becky Gilleylen and her staff doing the music for Christmas and Graduation. At the close of the program the children who are going into kindergarten march across the platform with their caps on and receive their diplomas. As I watched the children I had a flash back of the past twenty years and how rapidly the time has flown. In fact last Saturday I attended a high school graduation open house of one of the boys who had walked across our platform and received his diploma at age 5.
Somehow I just wanted to stop time, and keep these little ones, who are so teachable, from getting out into the world and taking on some of the world's ungodly philosophy. It is not that I don't want them to grow up. I simply wish they could all maintain the child-like faith that they now possess, throughout their entire lives. As I sat there listening to their names being called off, I realized that I needed to "seize the moment." So I prayed for each child that the songs, the prayers and the stories about Jesus and His love that are taught in our day care would be indelibly planted in their hearts.
I have been thinking about the song we used to sing, "Only one life, it will soon be past; Only what's done for Christ will last." And so I was once again challenged to not only "treasure the moments," but to "seize the moments" to spread God's love, whether it be in prayer, in kind words, in love or in just giving someone a smile.
Pictures above are of Becky with one of the children on her lap, Joyce our assistant director and myself and the children singing.

AT LAST A NEW BLOG!

I know I am way behind in my blogging. I think it is because my mind is too boggled to blog.

At any rate life goes on. Mother's day was so delightful. I spent a week in Iowa with Debbie and her family. We were privileged to speak twice. Once at Metro Assembly in DesMoines. Metro is an inter city church plant started when John was still pastor. They now have their own building and this was their first M/D banquet. What a response! Most of them had never been to a Mother/Daughter Banquet. What a thrill for us to be able to tell them how much Jesus loves them. One mother had brought her daughters and her grand daughters. They were dressed in pretty dresses. When the mother saw my camera she asked me if I would take their picture. I was able to mail a copy to her.
On Mother's day we spoke at a wonderful church in Cedarville, Iowa. John, Debbie and I did a tag team message. Again it was a joy to minister to people who were eager to hear about the faithfulness of God. We ate dinner at an old restored hotel in the town square. It was good food and a charming atmosphere. The pastor told us that Cedarville's claim to fame is that they have the largest town square in Iowa. The church is experiencing dynamic miracles of healing.
This year I have been experiencing some firsts! And so when John took us all to the driving range and bought a bucket of 150 balls, for the first time I tried to swing the iron. I can only say this..."I hit the ball better than I skied the slopes." (but then that still isn't saying much) However I think I could enjoy golfing.
When I got home from Iowa, my sis and her husband arrived. Nonie and I then drove to Columbus for the week end to celebrate Ashley's open house. We had a lot of fun being with family. John, Deb, Bethany and Jonathan were able to be there as well as Sis. Leach, Betsy, Brad and our new delightful friend Leah.
Last Tuesday, Nonie and I drove Ashley back to Columbus for her awards night. (She was in Toledo doing her Job Shadowing at one of the schools). What a thrill to a grandma's heart to watch her granddaughter receive many outstanding awards. Most of all the joy that comes from knowing she is serving the Lord and desires His will for her life. She will be attending Evangel university.
I don't have any particular spiritual application for this blog but I guess I can shout from the bottom of my heart "All together now, applause for God. Sing songs to the tune of His glory, set glory to rhythm of His praise." Psalm 66:1 and then Psalm 100:1 "On your feet now...applaud God. Bring a gift of laughter, sing yourselves into His presence." (both from the Message)
When you read this please join with me for I am on my feet singing, laughing and applauding my best Friend for His 72 years of faithfulness to me and my family.
PS...pictures above, me trying to hit the ball and my beautiful granddaughter Ashley!
