sequential?

Not sure why primary key needs to be sequential. GUID's work fine, thought they're quite a bit slower to process than integers.

A nice addition to this topic would be to discuss scoping primary keys. This forum, for example, uses integers for threads and messages (probably referring to the same key value for the content store, along with parent_id). Is there also a board or site_id that can be used to uniquely identify the message on a given site?
