Microsoft will be collaborating with the Digital Accessible Information SYstem (DAISY) Consortium on a standards-based development project to assist blind or print-disabled computer users. Recent advances have enabled individuals with print disabilities to access information using an assortment of technologies such as screen readers, large print, refreshable Braille, and text-so-speech synthesizers.
The challenge posed by complex page layout remains, however.
Formed in May 1996, the DAISY Consortium actively promotes the DAISY Standard to address this:
Envisioned as a reference model for other Open XML solution providers, the end result will be a free, downloadable plug-in for Microsoft Word. The plug-in will be able to translate Open XML-based documents into DAISY XML for reading and publishing navigable multimedia content.
