Silly Bug Boutique

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

Silly Bug Boutique For many many moons, my beloved Nichole has talked & dreamed about making & selling hair bows for little girls — as a hobby interest first, but also to see if a little bit of money could be made while she was having fun ;) Now, I’m happy to bring you the news that her dream has finally been realized! The Silly Bug Boutique (”clothes, bows, and more for your little ladybug!”) is open for business.

PS: The name (as I’m sure you’re wondering) comes from one of our nicknames for Audrey, “Bug” — “silly Bug”, of course, when she’s being extra-cute & playful.

For all my Pregnant Friends…”Must Have” Baby Gear

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

Robert and I have had numerous conversations with several couples having their first child on what to register for. I have used quite a few products in the last two years and evaluated their performance. I decided to write some reviews to help you choose the perfect gift (if you get invited to a baby shower) or to help you create your registry.

Things We Could NOT Live Without (in descending order):

10. Dr. Brown’s Bottles: Sure, you might as well get the BPA-free ones, although studies have shown that it really doesn’t matter. BPA is not as harmful as once thought. If your kid insists on physically eating the bottle, then DEFINITELY choose BPA-free;) The price is the same regardless. If you have a baby that has colic, reflux, or constant spit-up, you MUST have these bottles.

Pros:

Specially formulated to prevent air bubbles from passing through the nipple, cutting down on gas and spit-up. Leak-proof. All parts are dishwasher-safe, just get a dishwasher basket to put them in. No messy bags to deal with!

Cons:

Lots of parts - this is really only a con if you insist on hand-washing. You first-timers will only hand wash bottle parts for a month. Trust me - you’ll get over it. They’re expensive - like $13 a bottle, but they’re totally worth it.

Proudly exercising our Second Amendment rights

KelTec PF-9 We’re continually celebrating citizen rights and responsibilities here at the Morris ranch — our current topic is the Second Amendment. And what better way to celebrate the Second than by buying guns :)

We’ve made two additions: a handgun and a shotgun. For the handgun I decided on a KelTec PF-9 9mm; it’s inexpensive, good quality, comes with a lifetime warranty, and is small enough to make an excellent carry weapon.

Remington 870 Express Synthetic 18'' For the shotgun, we went with Remington’s 870 Express Synthetic with the 18″ barrel — a home defense standard. 12-gauge, pump-action — pumping a pump-action shotgun within earshot of some hapless schmuck who’s just broken into the wrong house is a pretty good way to end the confrontation without having to pull the trigger.

Continuing Education

Some random bits, aimed at your general enlightenment and edification.

Could you have passed the eighth grade in 1895? As it turns out, I wouldn’t have even come close… Debunking the fallacy of throwing more money at education. More support for getting rid of the Department of Education… Milton Friedman talks about limited government. Milton Friedman (who died today at 94) was a longstanding advocate of limited government. The link is to a PBS special from waay back yonder — remarkable how identical and timeless his points are to those that must be made (or really, re-made) again today…
