How Many People Does It Take to Make a Baby? July 26, 2008

For your average couple, it takes two people. Man and woman. Nice and simple.
In our case, it’s taken a whole team of people. Sometimes, I wish Ryan and I could have conceived our children the old-fashioned way — just the two of us, a bottle of wine, a romantic evening. Sounds nice, huh?
But that’s not the hand fate dealt us, and often I marvel over how many people wanted these babies to come into existence, and if it weren’t for all of those people, Ryan and I wouldn’t be in the position we are today. I hate to use the word “lucky” to describe our situation — but we truly are lucky to have all of these people who care about us and have helped us in our goal to have a baby.
So let’s add it up. How many people DOES it take to make a baby (or two)?
1:Â Sarah (eggs)
2: Ryan (sperm)
3: Marika (star member of Team U(terus), awesome woman and unfathomably generous friend)
4: Scott (Team U waterboy; I mean, supportive and extremely compassionate husband and friend)
5-6: Josie and Riley (who have certainly been understanding and helpful to their mommy and daddy during this pregnancy, and who say cute things to the babies)
7-10: Scott’s and Marika’s parents (all of whom supported them in their decision to help us, and who help them with Josie and Riley)
11-16: Our own parents (who have never questioned our goal of having children in such an unconventional way!)
17-18: Linda and Nancy from INCIID (who started the IVF scholarship program, of which we are grateful recipients)
19-47: I’m guessing on this one — but all of the people who helped us reach our $3,000 fundraising goal for INCIID, enabling us to receive our donated IVF cycle
48-50: Dr. Fisch and the nurses who helped us at SIRM-Las Vegas, our infertility clinic (it worked on the first try! Wow! Thanks guys!)
So it takes at least 50 people to make a baby! How crazy is that??!
Thank you so much to all of you who have provided support to all of us, thank you to all of you who have been praying for all of us and rooting us on. We love you.

Sarah, thank you for this grateful message.
It is making me cry.
And, I’m sure we will all continue to be praying for all of you as you complete this journey!
This is great!
For whatever reason, the line “Ryan (sperm)” makes me laugh. Thought I would let you know.
Sarah, Ryan, Marika and Scott — I am SO PROUD of all of you. It takes enormous generosity, patience, faith, perserverance and LOVE to make this commitment. To all of you on this list (including my own husband), I will forever be grateful for your support of my beautiful daughter and my amazing son-in-law as they begin this journey toward parenthood. You have taken us all in as your own family, and I thank you.
Just wanted to thank Sarah and Ryan for acknowledging the contributions of my family, especially Scott. When people find out that I am a surrogate, they usually tell me what a great thing it is that *I* am doing. But as Sarah has stated above, it really is a team effort and there is no way I could be doing this without a caring, kind, and supportive husband. So really, it’s a great thing that our *family* is doing, not just me. (I should probably thank Scott in person, but hey, a publicly posted comment here is a good start.)
Scott and Marika’s family are always at the top of my prayer list right before the babies. Without their major contribution this journey would be so different. Every time I think of the miraculous journey I get goose bumps. A new life is always a miracle, but this one brings tears to my eyes.
Ryan and Sarah our support will always be there, especially as you adjust to a family of 6!!!!!!
Hi Aunt Jill,
Yes - if everyone on the team had a hat with their role embroidered on it, Ryan’s would be the funniest - “Sperm”.
And I think that henceforth, I shall be known as Sarah “Eggs” Curran.
