Following a beat-and-raise quarter last night for online software vendor Salesforce's (CRM), the rewards are not what you might expect, with the shares down $11.60, or 17.8 percent, at $53.73. The company's forecast for a profit of 34 cents to 35 cents for the current quarter, excluding its cost to acquire privately held Instranet, was unimpressive to the Street. Read more »

Apple’s Safari browser has offered "private browsing" since 2005, Firefox since 2006 (via the Stealther extension), and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer may soon offer it as well. Earlier this week, Natya Nadella, senior VP of Microsoft’s search, portal and advertising platform group, said the company is planning to give IE 8 a privacy feature for erasing search histories and the other data that browsers often log automatically. So Microsoft’s widely publicized “edgy†ad campaign, the one designed to counter the Apple ads that have so eroded its brand, is to feature Jerry Seinfeld as celebrity pitchman. At Intel Corp.'s big developer conference this week, the chip giant was extolling the virtues of its newest little chip, called the Atom. The Atom has surprised both company executives and analysts with its popularity among hardware makers. The chip was introduced in March and is aimed at an emerging market of very low-cost mobile devices, especially in developing countries. Read more »
