The Ignobel Prizes

I honestly have lost most respect for the Nobel Prizes awarded as a result of this year's recipient of the Peace Prize - Al Gore. I just cannot see how this has anything to do with true peace, especially in light of the propaganda his film contains and his obvious personal hypocrisy on the issue. So sad to see where this esteemed committee and award have sunk this year. And just for the record, I was not hoping Rush Limbaugh won (he was also nominated, to my chagrin). What about world peace, folks?! Has no one helped advance this cause. Heck, give it to Bono if you can't find anyone else.

I guess I relegated the Nobel Peace Prize to the catagory of insipid about seventeen years ago (along with Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, Golden Globes, etc., etc).

When they gave it to Gorbachev in '90 for helping to end the cold war the gig was up for me; it revealed the clear bent of the committee.

Or maybe they are simply out of Jean Henry Dunant (1901) and Albert Schweitzers (1952)and have to go slumming. Although if that is the case, it has been happening for quite awhile.

I can forgive the committee for giving one to a niave idealist like Woodrow Wilson, good intentions do count for something. But when they gave a shared award to Yasir Arafat in '94 it was a travesty - that is like thanking an arsonist for the promise to not set as many fires.

Or in 2002 giving the award to Jimmy Carter. That was a clear slap at Bush for the invasion of Iraq.

Or even in 2005 giving it to the IAEA. I said good intentions count for something, but c'mon, effectiveness should be in there SOMEWHERE.

THis year's prize was just another in the line, shocking but not surprising.

You're right. I had not really followed these for the longest time and only paid attention this year since I heard about the nominees. It really is appalling. I have listened as others make reference to the Arafat award and can agree with everything you said.
