The one I currently live with turned 98 on Friday! She is the grandmother of my friend whose home I am helping remodel. I have lived with another older woman before. For the most part, we got along splendidly. She was actually much younger, only 85, I believe. The unique thing about my latest roommate is that she only speaks Chinese and I only speak English. But somehow, in the midst of tearing out the kitchen and all the carpeting and painting all the walls, we have been able to "communicate" quite well. So I learned from my friend that her grandmother has this thing for Taco Bell pizzas. It's the crunch factor - not the taste, as far as I can tell. Being the only cultural bridge between us (since I don't like Chinese food for the most part - I'm talking the authentic stuff, and that's all she eats), for her birthday, I took her out to Taco Bell. It was a great date!
My friend, Grace, serves as our translator. "Popo", as she is called, is a godly, Christian woman who actually served as a midwife in her younger years, helping to deliver over 1000 babies. She lived in Hong Kong until her early 70's when she came to the US. As Grace was trying to translate between us, her grandmother said, "It would be nice if I could talk to him (referring to me), he is a very nice man." I responded, "When we both get to heaven we will sit for hours and have many conversations." That truly will be an amazing experience. I'm sure she has many stories of life and faith to share!
