Highlands' Activities and Resident Programs
Activities and Classes
Highlands has a number of scheduled activities and classes. These have been established for the spiritual, educational, and social benefit of each resident. The classes include...
Highlands will cover the cost to off-campus activities, concerts, dramas and restaurants. However, a resident will need to provide her own spending money during her stay. Occasions will arise for a resident to earn extra spending money while she is at Highlands.
Educational Program
It is our desire for each resident to continue and/or further her education while at Highlands. There are several educational options to choose from. Highlands does request the parents or resident provide for the cost of continuing educational expenses.
Options for school-age residents:
Once accepted to Highlands, a caseworker will contact you to discuss educational plans.
Options for college-age residents:
Pregnancy Support
While at Highlands, you will meet with a caseworker on a regular basis to discuss your feelings and plans during this difficult time. We understand you will have many questions and concerns about your pregnancy and future plans. It is the goal of Highlands' staff to support you through the emotional feelings and to assist you in focusing on the alternatives you have for the decisions you are making. Foremost, we desire each young woman to seek God's plans for her and her child's lives.
Each expectant mother will work through a series of workbooks entitled, "My Baby and Me". These workbooks will enable you to explore all the options you have concerning your pregnancy and your child.
If a resident appears to need additional counseling regarding life issues not pertaining to her pregnancy, Highlands will seek to provide her with professional biblical counseling. At times, parents may be asked to assist in covering these costs.
Medical Program
Highlands understands how important proper medical care is for an expectant mother and her child.
All residents deliver at National Park Medical Center, a modern and well-equipped hospital in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The residents' medical care is provided by the Physicians for Women Clinic located adjacent to the hospital. The medical team will supervise your prenatal care, delivery, and post-delivery needs for you and the baby.
After entrance into Highlands, each resident will apply for Arkansas Medicaid for Pregnant Women to assist in covering the medical expenses related to the pregnancy. In the event a resident is covered by a private insurance, that insurance will serve as the primary insurance and Arkansas Medicaid will serve as a secondary insurance when applicable. A resident will need photo identification, a Social Security card, and a verification of income statement to apply for Arkansas Medicaid.
Parenting Program
Highlands is concerned for the welfare of all babies. At Highlands, expectant mothers who are making a parenting plan for their child will receive valuable parenting training.
Expectant mothers are educated on the skills necessary to raise a child. The classes at Highlands provide knowledge on basic infant care, how to be a responsible parent, and how to develop healthy family relationships.
Highlands will assist an expectant mother in making a realistic and stable parenting plan for her and her child.
