We're retiring AdSense Referrals

We're constantly looking for ways to improve AdSense by developing and supporting features which drive the best monetization results for our publishers. Sometimes, this requires retiring existing features so we can focus our efforts on the ones that will be most effective in the long term. For this reason, we will be retiring the AdSense Referrals program during the last week of August. We appreciate your patience during this transition and here are some alternative options to consider:
Google Affiliate Network: As part of the integration of DoubleClick, the DoubleClick Performics Affiliate Network will now operate as the Google Affiliate Network for advertisers targeting users located in the United States. Similar to the AdSense Referrals program, the Google Affiliate Network enables publishers to apply for advertiser programs and get paid based on advertiser-defined actions instead of clicks or impressions. For further details, please visit: http://www.google.com/ads/affiliatenetwork/.

AdSense for content ads: If you have less than three AdSense for content ad units on a page, you may wish to replace the referral ad units with standard AdSense for content ad units.
If you currently use referral ads, either to promote Google products or offerings from AdWords advertisers, AdSense Referrals code will no longer display ads beginning the last week of August. We encourage you to take the following steps before the product is retired:
Remove the referral code from your site(s): Please take a moment to remove all referral code from your sites before the last week of August, so you can continue to effectively monetize your ad space.
Run and save all referrals reports on your desktop: Create and save all reports related to the referrals program on your desktop, so you continue to have access to your valuable campaign information.
Thank you for your support of AdSense Referrals in the past. If you have any additional questions, please visit our Help Center.

Wow, this is very frustrating. I loved the referral ads! Will there be any image-based ads to replace this? So is the limit still going to be only 3 ads for content even if they don't take up much space? Please feel free to contact me at Mercedes2Matt@yaahoo.com or jotbyjot.blogspot.com

Not a bad idea. I never really "trusted" the referals. I just blogged it.

I am not surprised at the retirement of Ad Sense. I was interested in using it but found the instructions unintelligible. Obviously there were many people who did not, but if there are companies that are getting people to pay for instruction in how to use an internet product, you know there is a problem. I could never figure out why Google didn't make it easier to use. Don't they have a usability group?

Good move. The referrals weren't particularly effective anyway; they've been in the shadow of the normal AdSense ads for quite some time.

This IS just the referrals, not the regular AdSense ads, right???

Yup!.

Great move.Adsense referrals have been underperforming for me and many other fellow publishers.....

The launch of Google Affiliate Network is pretty exciting.Hope this would be the next big thing from Adsense..
Thanks!.

We love our experimentation policy....:)

Good move there! i never use referrals for my income., in fact, i don't found it's useful.

i just blogged about it at Belajar SEO

Yeah, I never really used the referrals either. I think I only use the firefox ones anyway. And most advertisers used the firefox one because their site works better in firefox.

Interesting. I'm wondering if Google wasn't getting much out of it, because it seemed like a great way to market Adsense. Perhaps Adsense is well enough known now that it isn't necessary to market it this way.

But there is no option for Bangladesh and Indian Publishers to sign up as a publisher. The country list doesn't contains all countries.

Oh even i used only Firefox and Google pack referrals and rest of them was not good for me.But the image referrals was okie.

Great but I am wondering what will happen with referred publishers in the past, will we still get percentage of their revenue or not? Thanks

fimbas said...

That is good, I've never seen any revenue from the referrals.

It should be possible for existing Adsense publishers to login to Google Affiliate Network without having to sign-up for that program separately.

I really don't understand this decision at all. I was making around $30 extra a month from referrals. Are you going to let us use more google ads to make up for the lost income? Some of us really need that extra money!

borisz said...

Well I use referrals in beginning a lot, I had few click a day but didn’t had any earnings and Referrals didn’t had any influence on my monthly revenue , so I expected this day when Referrals will be closed

This may not be a necessarily good move......... I've very rarely made money from the referral ads, but have found them to be useful on pages when the AdSense for contents ads only display hopeless adverts.... like on the front of my personal webpage www.john-duck.co.uk some of the useless **** that came up when I had Content adverts included "duck calls", "duck recipes" and all sorts of other useless adverts that were almost like having a laugh at my last name.... whereas Referral adverts at least gave me a chance of placing adverts on the page that alot of people might actually consider clicking on (e.g. sites for tweaking your MySpace, etc).... but would have been better if they'd stuck to showing a selection of the chosen ref ads (like a "pick & mix your own content advert") instead of one at a time spread over the whole advert area.
They were also useful when I was TRYING to run my own Photography & Web Design business from http://jd-photography-webdesign.co.uk & http://jdpages.co.uk and still run adverts on the site to try make a few extra £££'s from the site, and not have to constantly battle on with having to add rival business' websites to be blocked from having their adverts shown and having any potential customers (which I never did get) pinched.

No more being paid for clicks/impressions- just for actions?

hhhmmmm.

Sounds like a lot of advertisers will be getting free advertising.

My site still uses html, so in the next 6 weeks I'll have to review all 1200+ web pages to remove or replace the code ~ that's a lot of work. Not that I was making any money from referrals any way. The only other issue I have is that Double Click seemed to indicate that their 'ads' should be changed over often for promotions or what ever, who has time to do that?

Can you tell me in plain English what this means? Do we get paid for what has accumulated so far - 39 dollars in my case?

For me it's a shame as the AdSense ads help compliment ads I have as a participate in an affiliate ad program. For instance my blogs have low visitor levels for particular travel.com advertisers but I was able to offer that type of service to my readers by adding Hotel.com from AdSense. I for one will be sorry to see the change. And the instructions for using AdSense really aren't that hard. Believe me, if I can figure it out, anybody should be able to.

Hi,
I think that it is not easy to make money from the Google Affiliate Network because we need to generate sales to earn commission. That is really tough.

Sean said...

It is just the Referals that they are retiring the adsense and adsense for search are still going to be there.

the one thing I am wondering is how both the adsense and affiliate programs will work once the trasition is complete.

tono-bungay said...

It's a shame. Usually Adsense for Content performs better, but there are some pages where Referrals worked a lot better. Particularly pages that are dynamic and pages in another language or in more than one language. There, Referrals did a pretty good job of targeting by country and language. If only they had done better automatic optimization or rotation of the ads for performance, they could have been contenders.

Unfortunately, DoubleClick is not as good in other countries or languages, and it does no optimization at all, so it's not really an alternative. I was hoping that Google could teach them a thing or two.

Dave R. said...

boo. thats a shame. I just got a July Optimization report saying I need to add referals to my page -_-

NavyCS said...

This is truly a shame. My referrals have been converting at a 10% rate per click and have made good money for me and my advertisers. Reading these responses I guess I was the exception and not the rule...

Haven't looked yet but does the Affiliate network earnings and regular AdSense earnings become an aggregate so publishers can more easily reach the $100 mark?

NavyCS said...

"Haven't looked yet but does the Affiliate network earnings and regular AdSense earnings become an aggregate so publishers can more easily reach the $100 mark?"

Well, I just read the terms - it does NOT. As a matter of fact you have to earn $50 before you get paid and the $50 has to be from a single advertiser - AND only if the advertiser PAYS what is owed. The way I read it is if you have 3 advertisers you publish for and each earn you $30 in a month for a total of $90 you still don't get paid until one o them hits the $50 mark - and then you only get that single payment... Now I am rambling... DANG IT!

Piyush V Dubey said...

I think it is a good move. I am new to blogging and for last few days was trying to figure out how to the referrals on my blogs. There should be a more simpler way of adding custom search and other Adsense similar to Adsense-content.

Also please make the process simpler for non-web developers. I could not make head&tail of the cryptic code for custom search and referalls. when I tried to add in the blog, it was going for a toss. Any help is welcome. Thanks in advance.

This is a very poor idea. For now I use Adsense ads exclusively. Enough prospective advertisers had asked me about buying ad space on my site that I thought it was time to simply have a link referring them to Adsense. If Adsense referrals are to be retired, then I get no money for bringing advertisers through this network. Perhaps its time I explored some other advertising network after all.

§weet Gunner said...

i think in a way to improve the new service even more, we could be able to choose using our earned credits to "pay" for google services....
for example, i always wanted to have my site on the google's top search engine... and i already have some credit that i got from having the adsense code in my site.... SO.... as i think is too "complicated" the thing of paying for clicks every month to google... you could give us the option of using our credits for that instead of getting the money by mail or bank.

hope my idea would be useful someday. :D

cya!

The affiliate program won't be very popular, long as income PER advertizer has to exceed fifty dollars. Would be different if income were aggregated, as would be the proper thing to do, right ?

I'm going to miss them, a lot.
My web site is mainly about vitamin B12 but not the kind that's in most of the Adsense ads, so I liked having the referral ads because I knew I could choose ones which wouldn't be misleading....

I have to agree with a couple of the comments above.
The fact that you have to earn $50 before you get paid and the $50 has to be from a single advertiser - AND only if the advertiser PAYS what is owed. The way I read it is if you have 3 advertisers you publish for and each earn you $30 in a month for a total of $90 you still don't get paid until one o them hits the $50 mark - and then you only get that single payment.

Do you realize how hard this is for the average blogger?

Does anyone affiliated with the decision makers actually read this or is this comment form just to pacify us?

Maybe someone should tell the Adsense Optimisation team as my July 2008 Optimisation Report says:

"Referrals can add incremental revenue to your site. You are not currently using Referrals on your sites."

Nice...

Affiliate networks are good for the advertisers but not the publishers. This fact may lead your affiliate program into the white noise of the internet. No one will use it. I had joined some various affiliate networks with the inclination that I could potentially begin to target a specific market with products that are associated with what I do (architecture). There was no revenue from either of these networks for over two years. In fact, on two occasions where I attempted to test the system by having someone I knew buy a product, I recieved no revenue at all. Yes the product was purchased and delivered (and it was linked through my website) but who knows? There was some confusion as to whether the link was genuine. The website although not amazing, is respectable enough and fairly easy to navigate (CanadaBuilds.com) The adsense pay per click program made sense to me because the web page was being viewed by a number of potential buyers (as a destination that I would send them to). In fact, I remember that the adsense referral program was advertised originally as a response to the lacking performance of affiliate networks. They work for the advertisers, but not the publishers.
In a way, I feel as though I have spent too much time digging into the workings of these various advertising programs only to realize that they are a bit of a scam. I would be better off to simply target my own audience and sell my own products online with a few local and trusted suppliers. With respect, I am not sure I can trust Google anymore as a supplier and I suspect that a lot of other people may now feel this way.
It will be too difficult for me to now re-tool my website before the end of August and I am not sure that the spent time will be worth it. To be fair to anyone who has not yet been duped by the apparent lure of affiliate networks, I hope that you allow this posting to sit on your blog.
There is also a mention of 'United States' in the recent posting. Does this mean that my website in Canada will no longer work?
Thank you in advance for any comments.

I never made any money from the referal ads even though there have been a few clicks on the referal ads on my sites, on the other hand the regular adsense I have made money.

The affiliate network that is replacing the referals was an independent affiliate network that Google bought. affiliate networks work differently than pay-per-click programs that places like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft have.

it looks like a good move for Google due to the fact that they have an established affiliate program that they can incorporate into their advertising programs instead of having to start one up.

What about the Google Partnership program to share revenue with users?

is the $5/$100 bounties still going to exist within that program?

Good move. Really appreciating this move because, while searching for any useful software or service, lot of ads only pages displaying , that even rotating and the user will never go for a download. Stop such real cheaters being beat via this move.
Just do SEO for adsense, market is going to hit the ground. Anyway, its a good move. I'm planning to make an e-commerce like based site for new profit sharing advertisement for google.
It will be coming here

The Google Affiliate network has turned my company down for an account... is this because we're based in the UK? We use a lot of Google products and spend a small fortune on things like AdWords.

I'm extremely unhappy about this.

That's good.
Ifound no success with referals even there are many clicks, but no conversions.

because many internet users using security softwares to auto clean thier browsing histories including the Cookies. So there is no tracking available for referals for conversions.

I was accepted yesterday in google affiliate network, after logging in i notice that its just like commission junction(which i think 10 times bigger than google network)linkshare, share a sale or click bank and theres nothing similar to adsense referrals like google pack and most advertizers is offering 5 to 10% commision which means you have to gain a lot of visitors to earn good commision.Sorry for adsense referrals publishers that google network is not really a big surprize.

Even though it didn't make much money I always liked the referrals for firefox. I won't bother signing up for the new service. Not worth the hassle of yet another account/password etc etc etc.

I'll just do my own promotion of firefox without the google bar which is horrible anyway.

Bradley said...

I think Google could do a much better job of explaining this and being
less vague about it. For those of us who earn a good living from
referrals, this is taking away a substantial part of our income. I
have built part of my business around the promotion of the Google
Toolbar, Firefox, and Google Pack.

I need to know the following- will the new Google affiliate program
also contain ads for promoting Google Pack, or Firefox? Surely Google
still has an interest in seeing its toolbar installed.

A reply would be very appreciated.

I'm not understanding this 100%. Are they retiring Adsense altogether? I have the search boxes on my web site(s) and ads from Google, do I remove everything?
