What made the Super Bowl super.

written by Julie R. Neidlinger      4 comments      link this post

It wasn't the fumbles or interceptions.

It was this little bit of information that hasn't really been hyped as much as the fact that both coaches were African American.

Not only, for the first time in my life, did I actually understand what was happening on the field*, but actually enjoyed watching the game, no, not only that, but it was nice to watch two coaches not screaming on the sidelines.

Since I am a hapless football "fan", I chose the Indianapolis Colts as the team I'd cheer for. My reasoning was simple: I like horses, and the Neidlingers have a family history connection to Indiana. Made sense to me. The only thing I connected with the Chicago Bears was that stupid Saturday Night Live skit.

I have to say that the first few minutes of the game were painful.

"Well, that figures," I thought to myself as Hester made his 92-yard touchdown off the kick-off and all the Bears' fans started whooping and hollering around me. "Whatever team I pick is sure to be jinxed."

Watching the Super Bowl in a room of over 40 college-age guys during the Pracs study was interesting, though not as loud as I thought it might be. There were only a couple of us women out there watching the game. I did get tired of all the Prince jokes the guys made during the half-time show, though. Prince is such an easy mark, what with his purple clothes and high-heeled boots and androgynous aura. But you know what I think about Prince. And I think he did a good job. The guy can play guitar. It was a spectacle of a show, which is what the Super Bowl is.

All in all, a fine experience. Though I won't make watching football a habit, I would certainly watch the next Super Bowl and actually watch it for the game instead of just for the commercials.

For you Chicago Bears fans, well...Grossman cracked. That's just my unlearned opinion.

*Thanks, HD. Seriously, thanks for explaining downs. No one has ever bothered explaining football to me. I loved watching the game!

Glad I could be of help, Julie!

I happen to like Prince a great dealas well. In my opinion he is a musical genius. Of course Jim feels differently (see his post from last night - Oh God, Make It Stop, Make It Stop). Soo when the time came for the halftime show, I left the living room with its regular old tv and went into my room to watch Prince's performance in High Def with Surround Sound. It was great!

Julie, I've been checking in with your blog since the Jesus Camp postings last summer (I went to Lakewood Park Bible camp for about 10 years, a few years ahead of you, I think), and feel I need to instruct you now on why the Bears are much more worthy of your support than the Colts. Mostly because Chicago is a far superior town to Indianapolis.
I do agree with you on the Genius that is Prince (Purple Rain in the pouring rain in Miami? It was a wonderful thing.) as well as the hotness of Jeff Goldbloom. Favorite moment is him walking away from the crashed UFO with Will Smith in Independence Day.
But, I digress. You really should reconsider your Bears v. Colts stance.

I shall not be moved!

(re: Bears vs. Colts)

Horses are way better than bears.
