A new age doesn't begin
3 Dec 2008 11:11am GMT The decisive victory won by Saxby Chambliss over Jim Martin yesterday in the Georgia Senate runoff is reassuring in several respects. A contrary result would have carried a disproportionately large negative impact. It would have added further weight to the notion that some fundamental shift occurred on November 4. It would have added to the demoralization felt by Republicans licking their wounds following the results on November 4. It would have brought Democrats to within shouting distance...

Pulling Some Extra Weight
3 Dec 2008 5:00am GMT Michael Ramirez neatly sums up the disadvantage American automakers face in trying to keep up with their more nimble competition; click to enlarge: A bailout will only feed the beast for a few more years. The only solution, I think is bankruptcy, which Nancy Pelosi says is out of the question. But that is because her concern is the UAW and its constituency of retirees, not the automakers and not present and future workers in the auto industry. To comment on this post, go here.

What Happened in Bombay
3 Dec 2008 3:55am GMT I don't think this is the whole story by any means, but it no doubt helps to explain how ten gunmen could terrorize a city of 19 million: Indian police who bore the brunt of last week's attacks on Mumbai had defective bulletproof vests, First World War-era firearms and insufficient weapons training, police sources have told The Times. Many wore plastic helmets and body protectors designed for sticks and stones, rather than bullets, as they fought highly trained militants armed with AK47...

No 60
3 Dec 2008 3:09am GMT Senator Saxby Chambliss won a surprisingly easy victory over Democrat Jim Martin today, trouncing Martin 59 percent to 41 percent with 90 percent of precincts reporting. Saxby's win means the Democrats can't get to a filibuster-proof 60 votes this year; if Norm Coleman prevails here in Minnesota, the Democrats will have 58 votes to the Republicans 42. Which means, I guess, that the Dems will have to sway both Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe in order to pass controversial legislation. To...

Newly-Discovered Ballots Boost Franken
2 Dec 2008 8:43pm GMT Earlier today, a precinct in Maplewood, a St. Paul suburb, discovered 171 ballots that had not previously been counted. Apparently the precinct started using one electronic machine, which malfunctioned after 171 ballots had been cast. The precinct switched to another machine, but until now, it appears that no one remembered to pull the 171 ballots out of the original machine and count them. The Coleman campaign says that the 171 ballots will give Al Franken a net gain of 37 votes. The...
